Brought to you by the Cooperative Research Centres Association and created by the editors that brought you COSMOS, Australia s number one science magazine, KnowHow magazine seeks to reveal links between science and business, discovery and industry. Its focus is on solutions that are innovative, high impact and capable of being deployed now. KnowHow is about collaboration, identifying challenges and realising solutions. KnowHow Editor Heather Catchpole Editor Heather Catchpole is the editor of the KnowHow. Previously she was at Cosmos Media where she was managing editor of COSMOS magazine, the undergraduate career guide, Ultimate Science Guide, and the Postgraduate Survival Guide, as well as a host of interactive publications and education resources for science and technology. Heather has also worked as producer and journalist at the ABC and as editor of Helix at CSIRO. She has over 15 years of experience as a science journalist and has an expertise in geology and earth sciences.

5 ABOUT CRCs The Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) programme is an Australian Government Initiative administered by AusIndustry, a division within the Department of Industry. The CRC programme supports medium to longterm end user driven research collaborations to address major challenges facing Australia. CRCs pursue solutions to these challenges that are innovative, of high impact and capable of being effectively deployed by the end users. The CRC programme was officially launched in Since then there have been 200 CRCs funded by the Australia Government. The Australian Government has committed $3.7 billion with an additional $11.7 in cash and in-kind contributions from other participants. Cooperative Research Centres have generated a net econoic benefit to the community, with a benefit cost ratio of 3:1. Of 20 case studies given in the Excellence in Innovation trial by the G08/ATN Universities, 8 CRCs featured across seven of the studies. At the 2013 Eureka Prizes, of the 15 science prizes available, 3 were won by CRC projects.
