1 Courses Offered: BBI1O5 / BTT1O5 Grade 9 Introduction to Business (Open) BBI1O5 ½ credit to be taken in combination with BTT1O5 This course introduces students to the world of business. Students will develop an understanding of the functions of business, including accounting, marketing, information technology, human resources, and production, and of the importance of ethics and social responsibility. This course builds a foundation for further studies in business and helps students develop the business knowledge and skills they will need in their everyday lives. Information and Communication Technology in Business (Open) BTT1O5 ½ credit to be taken in combination with BBI1O5 This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation software, and website design skills. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills, and current issues related to the impact of information and communication technology. Students will examine how trends, issues, global economic changes, and information technology influence consumer buying habits. Students will engage in marketing research, develop marketing strategies, and produce a marketing plan for a product of their choice. Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business. 4 Information and Communication Technology: (Open) BTA3O1 The Digital Environment This course prepares students for the digital environment. Using a hands-on approach, students will further develop information and communication technology skills through the use of common business software applications. The concept and operation of e-business will be explored, and students will design and create an e-business website. The skills developed in this course will prepare students for success in the workplace and/or post-secondary studies. Windows Environment Word Processing Web Page Design Research & Presentation Using the Web Spreadsheet Database E-Business and E-Commerce Create folders and organize the contents of the course. Standard skills such as creation, copying, moving, renaming of files, history or windows. Hardware and software relating to business applications. Using industry standard software, create a variety of assignments to help the student learn the proper way to set up certain business documents as well as helping with report and essay writing formats. Letters, newsletters, tables, graphics, columns, etc. Using web-based software, students will learn the basic features and functions of web authoring software with business applications. Students will research a topic relevant to today and present their findings electronically. Students to use industry standard software to create a variety of assignments to help the student learn proper utilization of formulae and functions as they apply to business situations. Students use industry standard software to develop an awareness of table, query, and report creation in a variety of business situations. Students will develop an online store environment with their understanding of E-Business as developed during this unit. Security, payment methods and product display are relevant topics covered. Lays the ground work for BTX next year which publishes and utilizes Netstores. This course will be of use to any student wishing to improve their productivity with the computer. Most students can utilize procedures learned here in the creation and completion of work for other courses they take here, at college, at university, or at work. 5 Grade 12 Courses Offered: BDV4C1, BAT4M1, BBB4M1, BOH4M1, IDC4UF Entrepreneurship: Venture Planning in an Electronic Age (College Preparation) BDV4C1 This course provides students with the opportunity to develop and apply entrepreneurial skills through the creation of a venture plan that capitalizes on the potential of e-commerce. Students will research and identify an opportunity for a venture. They will then complete the components of a venture plan that includes a website. 6 Financial Accounting Principles (University/College Preparation) BAT4M1 This course introduces students to advanced accounting principles that will prepare them for post-secondary studies in business. Students will learn about financial statements for various forms of business ownership and how those statements are interpreted in making business decisions. This course further develops accounting methods for assets and introduces accounting for partnerships, corporations, and sources of financing. Students will analyze the role of a leader in business with a focus on decision making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress and conflict, motivation of employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility will be emphasized throughout the course. Students will investigate capital markets with a focus on Canadian stock market(s) and other financial securities and how they affect both the individual investor and corporations. Students enrolled in this class will partake in an investment contest where they will actively manage a hypothetical portfolio on-line. Students will analyze companies and scrutinize their corporate strategies.
