1 Sessin 4: What are glbal supply chains? Age range: 7-11 years Outline Learners will learn what a glbal supply chain is and hw the different stages and players can affect thse at either end f the chain. They will lk at a case study f strawberry prductin in Mrcc t understand hw supply chains affect strawberry wrkers, wh are mainly wmen, and cnsider what culd be dne t create a fairer supply chain. Learning bjectives T understand what a glbal supply chain is and that it cnsists f a series f intercnnected stages that invlve different peple, cmpanies and rganisatins. T recgnise sme features f fd injustice and empathise with thse affected by unfair supply chains. T develp cllabrative and discussin skills. Key questins What is a glbal supply chain? Hw are peple and cmmunities affected by glbal supply chains? What rle des the cnsumer have in the supply chain? Learning utcmes Learners will understand the cncept f a supply chain. Learners will identify cnnectins in the strawberry supply chain. Learners will create a paper versin f the supply chain and explain the links between the different players included. Resurces Slideshw B (Sessins 4 6): Slides 2 6 Activity sheet 1: Strawberry supply chain Resurce sheet 1: Making a paper supply chain Curriculum links England Pupils shuld be taught t: KS2 English Spken language Participate in discussins, presentatins, perfrmances, rle play, imprvisatins and debates. KS2 Gegraphy Human and physical gegraphy Describe and understand key aspects f human gegraphy, including: types f settlement and land use, ecnmic activity including trade links, and the distributin f natural resurces including energy, fd, minerals and water. 2 KS2 Design and technlgy Cking and nutritin Understand seasnality, and knw where and hw a variety f ingredients are grwn, reared, caught and prcessed. PSE Framewrk Sustainable develpment and glbal citizenship Learners shuld be given pprtunities t develp a psitive attitude n issues f pverty and fairness and t understand hw the envirnment can be affected by the decisins we make individually and cllectively; that lcal actins have glbal effects because f cnnectins between places and peple and hw pverty and inequality can cause prblems. KS2 Gegraphy Range Develp their gegraphical skills, knwledge and understanding thrugh learning abut places, envirnments and issues. Living in my wrld: caring fr places and envirnments and the imprtance f being a glbal citizen. Investigating Observe and ask questins abut a place, envirnment r a gegraphical issue, e.g. Why des it fld? Hw and why is ur village changing? Cmmunicating Express their wn pinins and be aware that peple have different pints f view abut places, envirnments and gegraphical issues, e.g. abut wind farms, fair trade. Make decisins abut gegraphical issues by distinguishing between fact and pinin and cnsidering different arguments, e.g. a traffic prblem. Cmmunicate findings in a variety f ways, e.g. using gegraphical terms, anntated phtgraphs, maps, diagrams, r ICT. ESDGC Wealth and Pverty Cpyright Oxfam GB. 3 Activity 4.1 (30 min) Creating a strawberry supply chain This activity aims t develp learners understanding f what a supply chain is and hw it wrks. Use slides 2 t 3 f Slideshw B t explain that a fd supply chain is the chain f stages smething ges thrugh frm a crp (r raw material) being grwn (such as a strawberry) t a finished prduct in a shp (such as a jar f strawberry jam). At each stage, the prduct is bught and sld between different peple in the supply chain. Sme prducts g thrugh different prcesses t be made int a finished prduct. Ask learners t think f ther examples f fd prducts that mve alng a supply chain. Print and cut ut cpies f Strawberry supply chain (Activity sheet 1) and distribute cpies f the eight rle-play cards arund the class. Every learner shuld have a card and be part f a grup f eight (which is nt evident t them at this stage). If necessary, smaller grups f six r seven can be used by remving ne, r bth, f the final tw rle-play cards (the Ethical Trading Initiative and Better Strawberries Grup). Learners culd write their rle nt a sticky label r sticky nte and wear it s that ther learners can find the next sequence in their chain mre easily. Explain that each learner nw represents a link in the strawberry supply chain. Tell learners that there are eight links in this chain. They need t mve arund the rm and find smene wh represents the link in the chain befre r after them, in ther wrds the persn they can buy r sell strawberries frm r t. They can nly find ne persn frm each stage. In this way, learners shuld cme tgether in grups f eight (r six r seven) t make ne cmplete chain. Learners representing the strawberry picker culd be given the strawberry card (see Activity sheet 1). As they cme tgether in their grups, learners culd pass this strawberry alng their human supply chain as a visual illustratin f the different stages f the chain. When learners have made their human supply chains they culd use their cards r labels t sequence the supply chain n a desk r wall space. The crrect rder f the supply chain is prvided n slide 4. Use the questins n slide 5 t prmpt discussin abut the supply chain in learners grups and/r as a whle class. Why d yu think this is called a supply chain? Wh d yu think earns the mst/least mney in this supply chain? Why d yu think this is? D yu think this supply chain is fair? Why/Why nt? Hw culd this supply chain be made fairer? Nw ask learners t think abut their wn rle in a supply chain D yu have a persnal rle in this supply chain? D yu have any influence r cntrl ver this supply chain? What ther supply chains are yu part f? Differentiatin Make it easier: Organise learners int grups f eight first befre distributing the rle play cards. Learners shuld then rganise themselves in their grups t shw the crrect rder f the strawberry supply chain. Cpyright Oxfam GB. Yu may reprduce this dcument fr educatinal purpses nly. Page 3

4 Activity 4.2 (20 min) Making cnnectins alng the supply chain In this activity, learners will use their knwledge and understanding t create a paper chain which represents a strawberry supply chain and the issues surrunding it. Organise learners int grups f three r fur. Give each grup a cpy f the template prvided in Making a paper supply chain (Activity sheet 2). Explain that learners need t wrk in their grups t create a paper chain t represent the strawberry supply chain. They shuld use their learning and understanding frm Activity 4.1 t add facts, ideas and issues that relate t the experiences f peple alng the supply chain fr each link. This culd be thrugh bth wrds and pictures. Learners culd als use the infrmatin prvided in Strawberry supply chain (Activity sheet 1) t anntate their chain. Encurage learners t add their wn thughts and feelings abut the supply chain. They culd als add themselves as cnsumers in this supply chain. Share the examples n slide 6 as ideas. Fr example: Strawberry pickers are at the start f the supply chain. They earn lw wages and have t wrk in difficult cnditins. Strawberry pickers wrk fr lcal farmers (called prducers). It may be useful t cmplete an example f an anntated link in the chain as a whle-class activity befre learners create their wn chains. Allw time at the end f the activity fr learners t share their chains with ther grups. Learners chains culd then be displayed in the classrm r elsewhere in the schl, prviding a useful way t assess and further disseminate their learning. Further ideas See Oxfam s G Bananas resurce t find ut abut the different stages f the banana supply chain. Updated with new facts, phtgraphs and stries, this resurce supprts learners t get t grips with Fairtrade and think critically abut sme f the challenges that banana farmers face. /resurces/g-bananas Terms f use Cpyright Oxfam GB Yu may use phtgraphs and assciated infrmatin in this resurce fr educatinal purpses at yur educatinal institutin. Can yu find the imprter t buy yur strawberries frm? Yur rle: Cnsumer Yu are at the end f the supply chain. Yu buy the strawberries t eat fr abut 2 per punnet. Each persn in the UK eats an average f 3kg f strawberries each year! 2 Can yu find the supermarket t buy yur strawberries frm? Wh are yu ging t sell the strawberries t? Can yu find them? Yur rle: The Ethical Trading Initiative This rganisatin wrks with Oxfam t imprve wrking cnditins fr the strawberry pickers. Smetimes the pickers are treated unfairly by the plantatin wners. Yur jb is t make sure that strawberry pickers are treated fairly s that they earn a better wage and are able t feel safe. Yu help t teach wmen abut their emplyment rights and make sure that strawberry pickers have a scial security card s that they can get help frm the gvernment. Yur rle: The Better Strawberries Grup This is a c-perative in Mrcc that wrks with supermarkets in the UK t try t make the supply chain fairer. Yur jb is t make sure that supermarkets pay a fair price fr their strawberries s that each persn in the supply chain receives a fair wage. Yu als wrk with supermarkets t help them understand what happens alng the supply chain. Can yu find a supermarket t wrk with? Can yu find a strawberry picker t supprt?
