1 Managerial Economics 1. Course Objective Dr. Tanushree Haldar Assistant Professor, MYRA school of Business Office Hours: Kindly contact me to schedule an appointment. The objective of this course is to acquaint students with basic tools and concepts of microeconomic analysis and their application to managerial decision-making. This course will enable students to analyze firm-level economic problems and understand their consequences, to compare alternative solutions to these problems, to understand the market, and to take informed and optimal decisions subject to various constraints and targets. This course is designed for first year PGDM and PGPX students. Students are expected to have some exposure to basic algebra and calculus skills. Topics include an overview of managerial economics; demand and supply and market, consumer behaviour, costs of production; market structures and pricing behaviour of firm; Welfare Analysis under taxation, and the economics of information and the role of government in the marketplace. 2. Learning outcomes At the end of this course, students will be able to: Use consumer choice model to analyse individual decisions and business decisions. Analyse competitive market outcomes using demand and supply framework Understand how prices get determined in markets and how it influences the benefits of consumers and producers in terms of consumer surplus and producer surplus. Analyse the consequences of government intervention Measure the responsiveness of consumer s demand and producer s supply to a change in price and income Understand constraints faced by firms Solve for cost minimization and profit maximization problems for firm Understand different types of market structures: perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly Explain how firms can use different pricing strategies to maximize profit: price discrimination Tools to analyse strategic scenarios Page 1 of 5

Managerial Economics and Business Strategy 4. Assessment Method There will be two quizzes, a midterm and a final. Students will also be evaluated for their class participation. Quizzes will be of 30mins duration and consist of MCQs. Mid-term and final exams would involve MCQs, descriptive questions and numerical. All exams would be closed book and closed notes. Component Weight Learning Outcome(s) Quiz 1 Quiz 2 Quiz 3 Final Examination Project 20% Students should be able to analyse competitive market outcomes using demand and supply framework. They should understand how prices get determined in markets and how it influences the benefits of different participants. They should be able to understand how demand curve and supply curve respond to changes to prices and income level. Students should be able to use consumer choice model to analyse 20 % individual s/consumer s decision making process. They should also understand the constraints faced by firms and how choices are made by businesses. Students should have an understanding of different types of market structures: perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly. They should understand firm s optimal strategies under different market scenario. 50% Students should achieve all learning goals prescribed by the course. Students should be able to apply the theory learned in class to a specific industry problem Class Participation 10% To develop better understanding through participation in classroom discussions and activities Total 100% 5. Importance of Economics, Market, Basic Assumption about participants in Market, Opportunity Cost, Production Possibility Frontier Chap 1 Introduce students to Economic way of thinking Module 2: Supply and Demand Session 2 Demand Curve, Supply Curve, Shifts in Demand and Supply Curve, Factors Influencing Demand and Supply Curve, Movement along and shift in demand and supply curve, Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply Curve, Adjustments to Changes in Demand or Supply Hurrican Sandy: Supply, Demand and Appropriate Responses to the Gas Shortage Chap 2 Provide an understanding of the determinants of demand and supply, the nature of demand and supply curves and their interaction in the market Session 3 Market Equilibrium, Consumer and Producer Surplus, Effect of Government Intervention Chap 2 To analyse competitive market outcomes using demand and supply framework. To understand how prices get determined and how it influences the benefits of different participants. END TERM 6. Instructional Methods and Expectations A variety of approaches will be used - lectures, cases, Video clips, in class exercises and problem solving, and exams. Performance in this course will depend on how well you perform in ALL the exams as well as class participation. Each session will begin with a recap of last class discussion. Each student is required to come prepared for the class and contribute to the discussions when called upon by the instructor.
