If companies were prohibited from earning more than zero economic profits, entrepreneurs would have little incentive to try new ways of doing things in an effort to reduce costs and gain profits. There would also be no incentive for new firms to enter an industry experiencing growing demand. Thus, society benefits from the market signals created when firms experience positive short-run economic profits. 10A/23-63
