2 Lesson Three GCSE Economics Unit 11: Personal Economics The National and Global Economy LENGTH: 50 minutes STUDENTS: Year 9, mixed ability CONTEXT: Consumer power - introductory lesson and follow up LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Understand what actions consumers can take to influence national and global activities Analyse the affects of such actions on producers, governments and in turn consumers TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES: 2 mins: Introduction/background or similar Introduce lesson topics and objectives 5 mins: Individual activity: Why should consumers take action over concerns such as animal testing, fair-trade, global warming etc? Two minutes to think of as many reasons why. Answers may include Conscience/because they should Make the world a better place Long-term future/save the planet/sustainability Individual responsibility To help others 5 mins: Whole class feedback: (pupils/teacher write bullet points on the board). Teacher-led explanation going through the bullet points giving examples where necessary, eg save the world. Go round class, one answer each, no duplication. 2 Copyright 2010 AQA and its licensors. 3 5 mins: Individual activity: Why should consumers not take action over concerns such as animal testing, fair-trade, global warming etc? Two minutes to think of as many reasons why. Answers may include: Will not make any difference Illegal/get into trouble Leave it to someone else Individual responsibility Make goods more expensive Has to be done 5 mins: Whole class feedback: (pupils/teacher write bullet points on the board). Teacher-led explanation going through the bullet points giving examples where necessary. Go round class, one answer each, no duplication. 20 mins: Brief: A cheap clothes retailer has just been accused in a newspaper article of using getting supplies from factories where the workers are paid very poor wages and work in dreadful conditions. Working in a small group, you should produce a presentation (could be flipchart or powerpoint) planning a campaign of consumer action. The presentation should clearly: set out the problem list the aims of the campaign explain the methods to be used provide an analysis of the benefits and any disadvantages should provide a clear action plan This activity could be varied to produce different scenarios for different groups. 10 mins: Extension activity: Write a letter to the Prime Minister (local MP/MEP) saying why your country should/should not get involved in controlling companies. (could be varied to give specific examples) 8 mins: Teacher plenary: Powerpoint attached Q&A - Check understanding of keys concepts: Objectives of action; methods; effects of action (positive and negative). They also say that alternative ways of testing would also be more expensive. Some of your friends believe that they should take action to stop animal testing. 1. List three possible actions that consumers might take: 2. Explain how these actions might: (a) Influence the producer.
