We want to know... TÜV Rheinland conducted a representative survey The relevance of test marks for consumers Source: TÜV Rheinland (German only) 2

Consumers value test marks. The TÜV Rheinland nationally representative Consumer Survey March 2016 clearly shows: Every other consumer pays attention to test marks when shopping. For half of the consumers asked in the survey, test marks are relevant for a targeted purchase decision. They are of equal importance for almost all trade sectors, but have a particular significance in the areas of toys, household goods, articles for children, sport & leisure and tools. 3

Consumers demand clear test marks, whose impartiality and independence they can trust.... that have a high informative value.... that quickly and transparently display test contents and results. 4

The final decision of the German Supreme Court... does not come as a surprise: Test marks for consumer advertising must always contain a reference with a summary of the applied test criteria that can be easily understood by the consumer. It must also be possible to clearly assign test marks to the corresponding product. TÜV Rheinland test marks for Germany and Europe now only receive individual IDs. 5

our individual IDs. Each test mark has an individual ID-number. We offer two different types of IDs that affect the number of certificates shown under one ID number as well as the complexity of the customer information in Certipedia. 15

Single or Parent IDs are ID names that refer to the number of certificates. Below, we would like to explain these two ID types and the requirements in more detail. 16

A Single ID... is automatically issued for each individual certificate. is automatically published in Certipedia and contains all legally required information. may also apply to a product group (i.e. products similar to each other) if several products are listed on the same certificate 17

A Parent ID... can be issued if several certificates covering different aspects were issued for one product and if those are to be grouped together (e.g. Tested for Harmful Substances and Quality). can be issued for several similar products with certificates of the same type (e.g. a toy series with only GS-tested items). allows all consolidated products to carry the test mark with the ID number of the Parent ID. is published in Certipedia and contains all legally required information. 18

Basic, Plus or Premium IDs differ in the way your certificates and test contents are displayed in Certipedia. A Basic ID only lists legally required information and is created automatically. A Plus ID contains more than the required information, e.g. product images, client logo, contact information, web link. A Premium ID contains even more functions, e.g. links to additional products, comprehensive descriptions of certified services, customer feedback, company portraits. 19

Does this much transparency and safety leave you speechless? 20

No problem sometimes a mark says more than thousand words. 21

FAQ Why are there only individual IDs? Driven by the active involvement of consumer protection organizations, there has been a legal precedent in Germany. It states that a reference to the test specifications and test results must be provided when test marks are used for advertising purposes. The German Supreme Court gave its verdict on July 21, TÜV Rheinland meets the requirements by providing a reference ( and an individual ID number for each mark. Is there a transition period? The verdict is final and applicable since its pronouncement on July 21, It applies to all test marks that are used in consumer advertising. 24

FAQ May the layout or the ID of the test mark be changed? The TÜV Rheinland test mark may not be changed. It must be used as issued with the test mark certificate by TÜV Rheinland. Do the new rules apply for the LGA marks as well? Yes. The LGA marks are issued with individual ID numbers just like the TÜV Rheinland marks and follow the same system. How do I get my test mark? Usually the test mark is generated with an individual ID number. After completion of certification it is sent automatically to the customer contact person through a secure download link. If you wish to receive the test mark earlier or want to apply for the creation of a Certipedia Parent ID, please contact us. 25
