PUT A TO THE A Visualization Report by Jeremy Mamisao The Usage Based Billing policy is a proposed regulation which will restrict our internet usage, effectively putting a meter on the amount of data we use on the world wide web. As Canadians we need to STOP this from going through as the UBB is unbeneficial to consumers and is simply a initiative put on by corporate phone and cable companies in an attempt to try and gain more profit out of us, control the Internet market, and ensure that consumers continue to subscribe to their services. The Usage Based Billing policy will crush innovative services, Canada's digital competitiveness, social progress, and your wallet. This has a impact on us culturally and economically, and goes against the open source democratic nature that the internet was built on. We urgently need to send a clear message to party leaders that we refuse to be gouged by big phone and cable companies and let them know that this policy needs to STOP. The following visualizations will explore Canadian internet trends, the impact of the implementation of such a policy and the reasons why our internet is better without it.

HOW DOES OUR INTERNET USAGE COMPARE TO OTHER COUNTRIES? Canada has a verily small digital divide in comparison to less fortunate countries. This visualization hoeps to address the kind of impact this might have on Canadian citizens in comparison to other countries that already have a usage based billing system. 1 CANADA currently no capp 33,311,400 25,086,000 75% have internet access UNITED KINGDOM limited and unlimited plans can be chosen 61,406,928 43,770,800 71% have internet access AUSTRALIA internet is capped; when a lot of data is used, internet speed is decreases 21,874,900 15,170,000 69% have internet access MALAYSIA limited and unlimited plans, but a much bigger digital divide 27,467,837 15,074,000 55% have internet NOTE: all stats are taken from the year 2008

HOW MUCH TIME DO CANADIANS SPEND ONLINE? If the majority of our population uses the internet, then the next question is how often? This visualization is a depiction of Canadian internet usage in comparison to the rest of the world. 2 Canada 43.5 United States 35.3 United Kingdom 32.3 South Korea 27.7 France 26.6 Brazil 25.8 Germany 24.1 World Average 23.1 Russia 21.8 Japan 18.4 China 13.5 India 12.1 NOTE: all stats are taken from the year 2010 and from Q4

IS THIS WHY WE NEED THE UBB, AND HOW IS THIS FAIR? 3 These statistics prove that Internet is a large part of Canadian culture and to our everyday lives. The implementation of the UBB policy would cripple our ability to use the internet and risks a negative impact on our online economy. The following visualizations show how data transfer is already highly giving Internet Service Providers (ISPs) a large income, and how the UBB furthers their greed. Data Costs for the average consumer Data Costs for ISP Providers 3$/GB less than 1 / GB... this means that ISP providers gain 300% profit off us already With the addition of the UBB policy, there would be a $2/GB fee associated with overconsumption of bandwidth. It s worth noting that for the cost of an external hardrive (~$60 / 250G = 0.24 /GB), one could use it once for the same price which is being proposed by the ISP companies. External Hardrive Purchased at Local Store UBB POLICY proposed overconsumption fee vs 0.24 /GB 2$/GB we would be paying 8x as much... HOW IS THIS FAIR?

LET S MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION! The Usage Based Billing policy is not needed in our Canadian society and unbeneficial to the Canadian consumer. We need to stand together and put a STOP to it for the sake of our own democratic freedoms. If you would like to learn more about the issue or sign the petition please visit: Thanks for viewing!
