1 The facts speak for themselves If you install the most sophisticated radiant tubing in your gas-heated furnace, it will enhance your operation to produce optimum yields. At Kanthal we have a unique knowledge about how to combine high-temperature alloys, burners and tubing to make any industrial furnace produce the highest effect possible. Years of experience in building fine-tuned and ingenious systems have taught us how to maximise them to the point where, in practice, they can be taken no further today. Our in-depth know-how comprises inner and outer tubes and burner combinations, as well as replacement tubing for all existing systems in all types of furnaces. The result is as simple as it is outstanding. A complete system, Kanthal Gas, with remarkable features and properties, adapted and suited to any specific purpose, in heat-treatment, aluminium and steel-industrial contexts. We will be happy to show you what we can do. We will advise you on the right choice of tubes and systems and calculate on the most suitable solution for your specific needs. 2 Designed to last Needless to say, our systems consist of carefully chosen, high-quality components which are aimed at providing long, trouble-free service life for un-interrupted furnace production. In brief, here are the main features of the radiant tubing we use. Fact: is a powder-metallurgical alloy able to withstand a maximum temperature of 1430 C, limited to 150 C in tubes. tubes are seamless and extruded. The APM is the outstanding choice for high-temperature, corrosive applications. The formation of cohesive aluminium-oxide film on the inner as well as on the outer surface of the radiant tube, will keep it free from contamination. This in turn means there is no need for cleaning or turning of the tube. The adherent alumina film formed on the tube is also an extremely efficient barrier against high-carbon activity. It makes the tube highly resistant to carburisation also in those cases where free carbon is allowed to accumulate on its surface. In addition, it makes highly resistant to sulphurus atmospheres. Die casting furnace. is superior to alloys such as Alloy 601, Super H and HP in highly corrosive environments and is only beaten by non-metallic materials. Sandvik 353MA Corresponding spec. UNS. S35315 Fact: Sandvik 353MA is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloyed with nitrogen and rare earth metals. The maximum temperature in air is limited to 1175 C. The tubes are seamless and extruded. Sandvik 353MA has high creep rupture strength and good structural stability at high temperatures. The resistance to corrosion is very good thanks to its ability to form a dense chromium oxide, which also makes it an excellent choice in carburising atmospheres. Its high nitriding resistance is very beneficial to service in high-temperature cracked ammonia, and the weldability is good. Sandvik 353 MA is also en excellent choise because of its high creep strength which makes it suitable as inner (flame) tube. It competes with alloys such as Alloy 600, RA 330 and Alloy 800 HT. Sandvik 53MA Corresponding spec. EN UNS S SS 368 Fact: Sandvik 53MA is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloyed with nitrogen and rare earth metals. The maximum temperature in air is limited to 1150 C. The tubes are seamless and extruded. The general properties of the Sandvik 53MA are basically the same as those of 353MA. The 53MA, however, is primarily used within a lower temperature range. Sandvik 53 MA is a perfect choise in lower temperature ranges and competes easily with AISI 310 S/310 H, AISI 309 S/309 H, SS 361 or W-Nr and also with alloys like Inconel DS, HP and HK-40. The system includes inner and outer tubes in Kanthal APM, Sandvik 353MA or 53MA and a gas burner. It will be delivered in four standard sizes (models) from 89 to 154 mm, inch outer tube diameter, to suit most furnaces on the market. The length is customised and different tube combinations are readily available for inner and outer tubes for best possible economical result and performance as the case may be. The fact that the APM outer tube runs at a maximum load of approximately 5 W/cm, 3 W/inch, results in very high power or up to 4 kw/m, 7.3 kw/ft, length. As compared to conventional NiCr tubes the power output is almost doubled, which makes the upgrading very economical at a moderate investment cost where the alternative would be a new furnace. A tube at the same furnace temperature can be dissipated at 5.3 W/cm, 4.9 kw/ft (more than twice NiCr). And the outer tube temperature will be 115 C, 060 F. 5

5 Tube shapes Single tubes of, Sandvik 353MA and 53MA can also be supplied as U or W-type tubes, as well as in the form of replacement tubes for currently operating systems, where existing burners or e.g. ceramic inner tubes are used. The tubes may be supplied for immediate installation, complete with flanges and bottoms. for burner nozzles Air and gas are mixed in the burner nozzle. Operating at high temperature, the complicated form of the burner nozzle assures that gases are mixed completely. The is easy to machine to suit this application. It also develops a protective aluminium layer, which preserves the nozzle against high-temperature corrosion. This protection in fact gets stronger with time, as the aluminium layer will improve by the influence of the excess air. 6 Applications The bulk of Kanthal's research activities is aimed at developing and supplying products which will give our customers optimum solutions for any given application. Here are a few examples of how, together with Sandvik 53MA and 353MA have been put to successful use in a number of typical furnace applications Continuous link belt furnace Operating temperature C In the 700 C zone: in inner, Sandvik 53MA in outer tubes In the 950 C zone: in both inner and outer tubes Used for hardening of bolts, nuts, ball bearings and other high-carbon steel components, these carburising furnaces often operate with a high-carbon potential and different temperature zones. A combination of APM in the high temperature/high-carbon potential zone with 53MA has proven an economic as well as a long-lasting solution.. Universal quench furnace Operating max temperature 930 C Straight through, can also be supplied with APM flamebuster in both inner and outer tubes The adherent aluminium film formed on the APM tube is an extremely effective barrier against the carbon activity in these furnaces. It makes the tubes highly resistant to carburisation from the furnace atmosphere and inhibits carbon penetration also in those cases where free carbon is allowed to accumulate on the tubes. In combination with the high loading capacity of up to 1 kw per tube, is the optimum choice. 3. Continuous annealing line Operating temperature 800 C Horizontal W type Sandvik 53MA or 353MA Long life in the W-type tubes is a major feature in these continuous processes, where unplanned production downtime to change the tubes are not accepted. 53MA or 353MA meet these demands and function well in both in the atmosphere and temperature in question, which is often 90-95% N and balance H at low dewpoint. 3 Electrically heated furnaces Kanthal tubes is the ideal choice also for electrically heated furnaces. Our manufacturing programme comprises a complete range of electric elements and tubes for virtually all uses. Products such as Kanthal Super, Silicon Carbide and Tubothal systems offer solutions in demanding applications in a vast number of industrial areas.
