2 Protection of Aluminum The surface of Aluminum quickly forms a highly protective oxide layer, impervious to Sulfur and other atmospheric pollutants This protective oxide layer is thick and provides excellent protection from additional corrosion or degradation The Aluminum Oxide layer has a weakness - Chlorine

Chlorine rich environments are ocean surfaces and near oceans, as well as areas of high fossil fuel combustion Chlorine combines with moisture and particles in the air to form an acidic slurry which literally dissolves the protective oxide layer Once the oxide layer is damaged it is now open to corrosion from atmospheric corrosive gases Normally, the Aluminum forms a white, crusty corrosion layer

Traditional corrosion prevention methods: Keep the Gases (Chlorine) away from the metal Foil Bags Require desiccants and complete seals Normally requires vacuum sealing for best results If a foil seal is broken or the bag torn or punctured there is no protection Positives: Proven to work / Proven to keep out moisture Negatives: Expensive in materials and time (long process) Only as good as the seals / only as good as the film

Traditional corrosion prevention methods: Use oils or volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) Traps volatile oils and chemicals inside paper or plastic to be released to coat the metal being protected Fogs the inside of the closed bag with a chemical cloud coating the metal keeping gases away from surface Positives More cost effective than foils and translucent / transparent Have been shown effective with some metals Negatives Actively coating your products with chemicals / potential Health and Safety concerns Many VCIs are not effective against Chlorine

9 Corrosive Gases Try To Penetrate Intercept -- But Fail Intercept provides a reactive barrier to the corrosive gases -- reacting and permanently neutralizing them. As the Intercept is used up it changes colors: Corrosion Intercept : Copper to Gray (abbr. As CIF below) At normal atmospheric levels of gases: Chlorine15 yr/mil of CIF Sulfur 10 yr/mil of CIF
