1 FR-1410 Decabromodiphenyl ethane Application Data Sheet for Polyamide 6,6 (Nylon 6,6) FR-1410 is offered by ICL-IP as a flame retardant additive containing 82% aromatic bromine. Its high bromine content coupled with its exceptional thermal stability makes it the material of choice for a large variety of applications. Its chemical structure and properties are shown in Figure 1. Main features about FR-1410 are: Its chemistry is not related with diphenyl oxide Being RoHS compliant, it can be used in the production and sales of electrical and electronic equipment in Europe It is commonly used in polyolefins (PP, PE and their copolymers), styrenic homo- and copolymers and several engineering thermoplastics like PBT and polyamides. It is suitable for both UL-94 V-2 and V-0 ratings. It offers an optimal balance of properties. 2 Thermal stability Thermogravimetric analysis of FR-1410 (Table 1) reflects its high thermal stability allowing high processing temperatures. Its thermal stability combined with excellent resistance to hydrolysis, makes it the product of choice when recyclability is an issue. 3 FR efficiency FR-1410, containing 82% aromatic bromine exhibits good flame retardancy at low loading. In order to get class V-0 with a minimum content of FR-1410, it is recommended to add small quantities of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to eliminate the risk of dripping. PTFE is preferably added in the compound via a master-batch concentrate to ensure a homogeneous blend. Table 2 provides indicative formulations and properties achievable with FR-1410 in glass reinforced polyamide 6,6. 4 Fire-Safety FR-1410 (decabromodiphenyl ethane produced by ICL-IP) may be considered as an important building block to provide safety against the danger of fire. Indeed, fire safety is still an area of high concern in developed countries. In Europe million fires are reported per year (2006), resulting in 20,000 25,000 fire deaths and 250, ,000 fire injuries. Also, in the US 2.3 million fires occurred in One major fire cause is to be found in Electrical and Electronic (E&E) equipment. Moreover, when exposed to an external ignition, this type of equipment often plays a key role in creating fatal or near fatal flashover conditions. E&E equipment if not treated with fire retardants are easily ignited and can contribute to the fast spreading of fire. This area is not always taken enough into consideration in consumer protection legislation. The use of FR-1410 in E&E equipment may prevent fatal electrical fire accidents and property damage. Furthermore, depending on the circumstances, FR-1410 can naturally prevent important environmental damage caused by such fires. Health Safety - Environmental aspects Decabromodiphenyl ethane, a mature product in the market, has undergone extensive toxicological and environmental testing 1, and has been proven to pose no risk to health and the environment for its recommended end-uses. FR-1410 s chemical structure is designed to eliminate any risk of formation of brominated dioxins and/or furans. As part of an ongoing Product Stewardship Program and Customer oriented policy, ICL-IP is committed to implement further toxicological and environmental tests if needed. Applications Recommended applications of FR-1410 in polyamides are: connectors, switches, (Figures 2 and 3). 1 Further information available upon request
