Segment overview

Importance of exterior metal packaging coatings White coatings Clear coatings Requirements: Tack-free coating Smooth, glossy surface No surface defects Brightness Requirements: Tack-free coating Smooth, glossy surface No surface defects Clarity Applying a coating that is aesthetically pleasing, smooth, and defect-free also improves productivity and provides various levels of protection for both the can and its contents.

Challenges addressed by CAB and Solus 2100

Eastman cellulose esters in metal packaging coatings Improving the appearance of metal packaging coatings Eastman CAB and Solus 2100 improve productivity Eliminate blocking Reduce surface defects Enhance flow and leveling Eastman CAB and Solus 2100 improve appearance Improve gloss value No haze High reflection

Results

Overview testing methods External coatings are composed of a white polyester/melamine base coat applied directly to the metal substrate and a polyester/melamine clear coat or lacquer applied over the image printed on the base coat. Both clear and white formulations were prepared and tested. Blocking test ASTM test method D (2006). The panels were subjected to a pressure of 110 psi for 16 hours at 43 C before being pulled apart and assessed for blocking resistance. Flow and leveling A visual assessment was made of the flow and leveling of the coatings. Surface defects A visual assessment was made for surface defects. Assessed for surface defects such as fish eyes and orange peel. Viscosity DIN4 flow cup

White coating formulation Two different Eastman additives, CAB and Solus 2100 were evaluated along with a industry standard flow and leveling agent.

Clear coating formulation

Viscosity of white and clear can formulations White can coating Din 4 flow cup viscosity (seconds) No flow and leveling additive 96 1% CAB % Industry standard grade 98 1% Solus Clear can coating Din 4 flow cup viscosity (seconds) No flow and leveling additive 84 1% CAB % Industry standard grade 92 1% Solus

Properties and surface appearance White and clear can coatings Clear coating White coating Adding Eastman CAB and Solus 2100 eliminates blocking, reduces surface defects, and enhances flow and leveling.

Gloss White and clear can coatings Gloss values of clear can coating Gloss values of white can coating Appearance is everything. Eastman CAB and Solus 2100 clearly improve gloss value at 60. *Gloss measurements include reflectance from steel. Clears coats applied directly on steel.

Distinctness of image (DOI) In clear can coatings Distinctness of image % No additive 1% 1% 1% CAB Solus 2100 Industry standard grade The addition of CAB or Solus 2100 does not impact the DOI.

Clarity Clear can lacquers after shaking on Griffin flask shaker and standing for 24 hours No additive 1% CAB % Solus % Polyacrylate Addition of CAB and Solus 2100 does not impact the clarity of the clear can coating formulation.

Conclusion

Can coatings summary Cellulose esters improve productivity and appearance Improves productivity Eliminate blocking Reduce surface defects Enhance flow and leveling Improves appearance Improve gloss value No haze High reflection Added benefits to clear coatings Maintain DOI Excellent clarity
