Visit Us Hall 7 Stand C22 The ultimate in high slip and stability Incroslip TM SL

Introduction This presentation outlines some of the results observed using Incroslip SL To receive the full presentation containing methodology, recommended addition levels and quantified results, please contact us at:

Why Are Slip Additives Needed? Polymers exhibit high friction, this can create issues in: Packaging Films Caps & Closures Automotive Plastics

Commonly Used Slip Additives Slip Additives are used to reduce friction between the polymer and a second surface, either another polymer or another material Commonly used slip additives include: Erucamide is unsaturated and excellent for high slip performance Behenamide is fully saturated and good when high oxidative stability is required, but the slip agent is poorer than the un-saturated amides Silicones

So What s Wrong With What We Currently Use? In some applications nothing However, the unsaturated primary amides have a weak point that can breakdown under certain conditions The breakdown products can create unwanted issues such as tackiness, bloom, odour, change in colour, impact on taste and reduced performance The saturated amides have poor slip properties Therefore, some applications require a slip additive to deliver a combination of high slip and high stability

Solutions for Packaging Films

Technical Requirements for Film Traditional slip additives Incroslip SL Process consistently Wind on and off reels Ease of in use application (secondary processing) Low odour Low visible bloom Good colour Low stickiness Maintain CoF in all conditions

Ranking (higher value = stronger odour) Odour Tests in HDPE Compounds Ranking Test - Panellists were asked to rank each of the four samples in order of least odour to most odour (1 = least odour, 4 = most odour) Incroslip SL has the lowest odour when tested in a formulation Incroslip SL Behenamide Erucamide Blank HDPE

Incroslip SL Erucamide Colour Stability - Oxygen Induction Tests (OIT) Why do you want a product with good colour stability? Less yellowing indicates less oxidation 0 hours 72 hours 168 hours Lower colour of finished films Fewer oxidative bi-products Less demand on anti-oxidants in system?

Kinetic CoF Long Term Slip in LDPE Blown Film Control 1000 ppm erucamide 1000 ppm behenamide 1000 ppm Incroslip SL Incroslip SL and erucamide have similar high slip performance over the first 4 weeks after extrusion. Behenamide and natural silica have poor slip properties. Incroslip SL has retained high slip performance where erucamide has failed resulting in decreasing slip performance Films are stored in the laboratory and subjected to natural fluctuating light and temperature over the years hour 1 month 4 years All samples contain 1000 ppm natural silica

Kinetic CoF Kinetic CoF of hpp in UV Cabinet 1.00 Control 2500 ppm erucamide 2500 ppm Incroslip SL hrs ambient 432 hrs ambient + 48 hrs UV 432 hrs ambient hrs UV *UV cabinet is maintained at 50 C, All samples contain 1000 ppm natural silica

Conclusions Under UV exposure erucamide loses significant performance Under UV exposure Incroslip SL maintains its CoF level Incroslip SL has the same frictional properties as erucamide Kinetic CoF of Incroslip SL vs. erucamide and Behenamide at 750 ppm in LDPE (35 µm film, All Contain 1k ppm Natural Silica) Kinetic CoF of Incroslip SL vs. erucamide and Behenamide at 2500 ppm in hpp (50 µm film, All Contain 2k ppm Synthetic Silica)

Requirements for Molding Traditional Slip Additives Incroslip SL Cycle consistency Process efficiency Mold release Low odour Scratch resistance Low visible bloom Good and consistent colour

Incroslip SL Scratch Width in cpp Incroslip SL reduces scratch width, depth and smoothness in PP impact copolymer, resulting in less visible scratches and less scratching overall Blank PP 5 N Incroslip SL 5 N Blank PP 10 N Incroslip SL 10 N Scratch width of blank PP and with 1% Incroslip SL at 5N and 10N scratch loads

Incroslip SL Reduced Visible Bloom Incroslip SL reduces visible bloom in PP impact copolymer after exposure to UV light, resulting in parts that retain their colour of longer.

Mold Release (% of blank) Percentage Mold Release in PP Incroslip SL reduces mold release force, allowing easier removal of parts from the mold, saving time, energy and reducing the amount of waste % decrease in required mold release force 60 Blank PPc Start 0.5% 0.5% Incroslip SL SL
