Technical Information without LOXANOL with LOXANOL LOXANOL P Additive to prolong open time in powder form plasters

For the application of synthetic, silicate or silicone resin based plasters it is essential to achieve a sufficient working time for satisfying application properties and the desired structure of the plaster applied. The fast water release, especially during summer or because of draught (building protection by sheets), decreases the time for the application critically. To solve these kind of problem the liquid plasters requires an additive based on oleo chemical products e.g. LOXANOL 842 DP-types. Up till now there was no adequate additive for powder plasters (mineral, silica or silicone bound, etc. available) The above mentioned problems have normally been solved by optimising the binder, thickener or the bubble promoter. LOXANOL P comes up with a new solution. LOXANOL P is an emulsion that is based on oleo chemical substances coated on silica. LOXANOL P has successfully been tested for mineral based, thin layer plaster systems and for organo-silica powder systems. It is expected that LOXANOL P will show the same properties if used in systems that have as the only binder a powder form emulsion. Areas where the plaster has not been applied at the same time will not appear differently. LOXANOL P shows the following advantages:

* Open time The addition of LOXANOL P to the plaster system prolongs the open time. That makes structuring of masonry finishes possible even after longer drying time. Differences in the plaster structure, applied at different times will barely appear. * Hydrophobization LOXANOL P will not show the typical water repellency known from hydrophobization additives. LOXANOL P will form a barrier on top of the dried coating surface and will prolong the time water needs to penetrate into the film. Furthermore there is no influence on recoatability. * Cracking LOXANOL P reduces cracking. * Elastification, processing The plasters containing LOXANOL P are more elastic and therefore require less force and energy during application. Disadvantages, like accelerated cement reaction or deteriorated resistance (water, UV, etc.) has not been noticed. The optimal dosage depends on the formulation used. Normal dosages are between % calculated on total formulation. Due the silica based carrier it might be necessary to increase the amount of water slightly. R-LH 97-15

After a maturity time of 5 minutes the plaster is applied on glass with an even thickness. A probe is placed on the wet paint. The probe is constantly moved at 21.8 cm/h through the drying film. The force required to move the probe is recorded. The progress of drying is shown in increased forces. LOXANOL P in a organo-silicate powder plaster Open time prolongation ,5 1 2 Due to the test results the efficiency of LOXANOL P is proved. The control without any additive shows an open time of approx. 11 min, the sample with 2 % LOXANOL P approx. 32 minutes. Optimum price/performance properties can be achieved in the example shown by using approx. 1 % LOXANOL P (27 min prolonged open time). 2) Cracking The sample without LOXANOL P shows a tendency to cracking. Addition of just 0.5 % LOXANOL P eliminates the cracking.

The time of how long the water needs to penetrate into the coating is determined. Without LOXANOL P the water immediately penetrates into the film all the way down to the substrate (test on glass panel). By using LOXANOL P it clearly can be seen that no spreading of water will occur on the film surface. The time water needs to penetrate into the film is tremendously increased and the depth of penetration is reduced. 7 HYDROPALAT 760 HYDROPALAT 760 improves the wetting of the fillers and pigments. The advantages are: low energy required during the addition of the powder components amount of water can be reduced the plaster appears more elastic pigments and fillers are more homogeneous in the film FOAMASTER PD-1 Reduces macro foam during compound mixing TEXAPON K TEXAPON K forms microscopic fine foam, which improves the application and partly the open time of the plaster.
