HIGH NITROGEN STEELS HNS

THE CONCEPT NITROGEN Why using Nitrogen as alloying element? N increases the strength especially for austenitic steels without a reduction of toughness N stabilizes the austenitic structure N increases the corrosion resistance N 2

THE CONCEPT NITROGEN Nitrogen Lower tendency to build grain-boundary segregations Small size and equal distribution of the nitrides => ductile Carbon The cluster formation is a pre-stage of carbides Tendency to build grain-boundary segregations => brittle 4

THE CONCEPT NITROGEN Mechanism of action Increase of the interstital solubility Increase of hardenability Avoidance of segregations like M23C6 and M7C3 Sufficient chrome content in the matrix Increase of corrosion resitance 8

THE CONCEPT NITROGEN Nitrogen solubility Sieverts: [%N] = /f N x P N2 log f N = e N Cr [%Cr] + e N C [%C] +... e N C Si Ni W Mo Mn Cr V Nb Ti Reduces solubility Increases solubility 9

CRONIDUR 30 Resistance of CRONIDUR 30 vs. AISI 440C against aggressive mediums Neither CRONIDUR 30 nor 440C are resistant in strong mineral acids. Compared with 440C the CRONIDUR 30 has clear advantages in thin acids. In chloric acids only the CRONIDUR 30 should be used. The 440C shows pitting. 16
