1 Subject: WPS America.com Software Upgrades-AWS and ASME Codes Updates Dear Users of WPS America.com: WPS America.com welding software for the AWS and ASME codes has been successfully upgraded. As part of our continuous service improvement and software enhancement, here are new updates: [I] AWS Codes: A) The AWS Welding Procedure Software (WPS, PQR): -Reviewed, updated and enhanced editing of Instant Qualified Ranges Data (codes' rules), in WPS and PQR (includes addition of data for AWS D17.1, AWS B2.1): -Qualified Position -Qualified Diameter -Qualified Thickness -Qualified Base Metals -Qualified Filler Metals (AWS D1.1, D1.2, D1.3, D1.5, D1.6, D9.1, D17.1 and AWS B2.1) -Now, with selection of each data, matching welding process(es) for each test condition, provided in procedure. -Updated Instant Qualified Ranges Data (codes' rules) for AWS D9.1 code mainly for welding position in uphill or downhill progression (See B for more detail) -New addition of AWS D17.1 and AWS B2.1 code to the software: Added Instant Qualified Ranges Data (codes' rules), in WPS and PQR for AWS D17.1 and AWS B2.1 code (NEW) -Addition of matching welding process and impact test condition for all selections above in WPS and PQR for AWS D17.1 and AWS B2.1 code (NEW) -For AWS D17.1 and AWS B2.1 code, there are more selection choices based on test condition (with or without impact test) (NEW) -For AWS D17.1 and AWS B2.1 code, selections for Special Processes of Hard-Facing Weld Metal Overlay (Wear Resistance) and Corrosion-Resistant Weld Metal Overlay (Cladding) are provided for all selections above (NEW) Page 1 of 5

2 Note: Instant Qualified Ranges Data, in WPS and PQR, help user to quickly review of codes' rules, basic requirements of essential variables for each code in a glance. These data are necessary to make better decision, while preparing your procedure. -Updated Guides in WPS, PQR forms for AWS D9.1, and AWS D17.1 code Note: Orange Guides shown in WPS, PQR forms, help user in a glance to quickly review of codes essential variables, to make instant decision, plus to do a final document review. B) The AWS Welder Software (WPQR): -Updated Welder Performance Qualification (WPQR) fully automatic form for AWS D9.1 code, mainly for welding position in uphill or downhill progression: Note 1: Qualification with uphill progression (3G or 3F) shall qualify the welder or welding operator with either uphill or downhill progression. However, qualification with downhill progression shall qualify the welder or welding operator with downhill progression only. (AWS D9.1) Note 2: Qualification in 4G or 4F position shall qualify the welder or welding operator with vertical downhill progression only. (AWS D9.1) C) Highlights of AWS welding codes: -Updated Highlights of AWS D9.1 code -Added new Highlights of AWS D17.1 and AWS B2.1 code (NEW) D) The AWS software supports the latest editions of the AWS codes: AWS D AWS D AWS D AWS D AWS D AWS D AWS D AWS B ADD1 (second printing, March 2012) AWS A5 Series for Filler Metals [II] ASME Codes: Major updates for the ASME Welding Software (WPS, PQR) and ASME Welder Software (WPQ), includes: Page 2 of 5

3 (a) Database of Base Metals (WPS, PQR, WPQ) -Over 150 new materials (ASME, ASTM, API and new foreign material specifications), were added to database -Some old materials were deleted from database (mainly forgings or castings) -The 2013 edition of ASME Section IX has modified the format of the table QW/QB-422, the P-number table, to A/SA-XXX and B/SB-XXX so that both the ASTM and ASME versions of specifications are clearly assigned the same P-number. (b) The ASME Welding Procedure Software (WPS, PQR): -Reviewed, updated and enhanced editing of Instant Qualified Ranges Data (codes' rules), in WPS and PQR forms for: -Qualified Position -Qualified Diameter -Qualified Thickness -Qualified Weld Thickness -Qualified Base Metals -Qualified Filler Metals -Addition of matching welding process and impact test condition for all selections above. Now, there are more selection choices based on test condition (with or without impact test); also by selection of each data, matching welding process(es) for each test condition, provided in procedure. -Addition of Special Processes, Hard-Facing Weld Metal Overlay (Wear Resistance) and Corrosion-Resistant Weld Metal Overlay (Cladding) for all selections above. For Qualified Thickness & Qualified Weld Thickness: -For test coupons over 6 in. (150 mm) thick, the full thickness of the test coupon shall be welded (ASME IX, Table QW-451.1) NEW -For impact test application: Groove test qualify fillet for all fillet sizes on base metal thicknesses qualified by groove test and all diameters (Table QW-451.4) NEW -For Non-impact test application: Groove test qualify fillet for all fillet sizes on all base metal thicknesses and all diameters (Table QW-451.4) NEW Page 3 of 5

4 Note: Instant Qualified Ranges Data, in WPS and PQR, help user to quickly review of codes' rules, basic requirements of essential variables for each code in a glance. These data are necessary to make better decision, while preparing your procedure. (c) Good to Know: Some of the new other changes (ASME Section IX-2013) -Addition of Fusing to title of Section IX code book (New Plastic Fusion-Part QF): ASME Section IX Qualification Standard for Welding, Brazing, and Fusing Procedures; Welders; Brazers; and Welding, Brazing, and Fusing Operators OR ASME Section IX Welding, Brazing, and Fusing Qualifications -Replaced the terms manufacturer, contractor, assembler, installer, and fabricator with the term organization (applied to the forms WPS, PQR and WPQ). -Three new welding processes have been added: (NEW) Hybrid Laser-GMAW (LBW+GMAW) (automatic welding) Hybrid Plasma-GMAW (PAW+GMAW) (machine welding) Friction Stir Welding (FSW) (aluminum plate heat exchanger fabrication) -MANDATORY APPENDIX E: PERMITTED SWPSs AWS Standard Welding Procedure Specifications that may be used under the requirements given in Article V of ASME Section IX -NONMANDATORY APPENDIX K: (NEW) This new Appendix has guidance for engineers who want to invoke the requirements of Section IX in other codes, standards, specifications, and contract documents, properly. -Changed (short circuiting arc, globular arc, spray arc, pulsed spray arc) to (short circuiting transfer, globular transfer, spray transfer, pulsed spray transfer), respectively (applied to the forms WPS, PQR and WPQ). Note: Changes of ASME 2013, become mandatory January 1, 2014 (d) ASME Welding Procedure and Welder Performance Software support: ASME BPVC Section IX-2013 (Published July) ASME BPVC Section I-2013 (Published July) ASME BPVC Section VIII-Division (Published July) ASME B ASME B Page 4 of 5
