1 Type of Bulletin: Technical Process Bulletin Product Title: ANOSEAL 9000 Product View: ANOSEAL 9000 Description: Mid Temperature Seal for Anodized Aluminum (low foam) Status: complete Technical Process Bulletin ANOSEAL 9000 Mid Temperature Seal for Anodized Aluminum (low foam) 1. Introduction: Technical Process Bulletin No This Revision: 06/07/2006 ANOSEAL 9000 is a highly effective, low foam, liquid Nickel acetate base seal process for use on clear, integral or two-step electrolytically colored or organic dye colored anodized Aluminum. ANOSEAL 9000 improves the corrosion resistance of the anodized film by penetrating the pores of the anodic film through a precipitation mechanism which plugs these voids. ANOSEAL 9000 can reduce or eliminate the smut or powdering often experienced in sealing anodized aluminum. ANOSEAL 9000 will also eliminate yellowing which results in sealing clear, anodic coatings at higher temperatures in sealing baths containing organic dispersants. ANOSEAL 9000 meets the sealing requirements of commercial and certain military specifications. For plants with nickel recovery systems, ANOSEAL MT Additive is available to enable the restoration of the sealing bath to the advantageous properties of an ANOSEAL 9000 bath over conventional nickel acetate seal baths. The ANOSEAL MT Additive restores the low foam and sealing smut preventative properties of the ANOSEAL 9000 bath. 2. Operating Summary: Chemical Bath Preparation per 100 gallons: Anoseal to 2.5 gallons ( L per 100 liters) Operation and Control: ANOSEAL 9000 Concentration 1.5 to 2.5 % by volume (Optimum 2.0%) 3.0 to 4.0 % by vol. Materials: ANOSEAL 9000 ANOSEAL MT Additive SC-640 Acetic Acid Ammonium Hydroxide Testing Reagents and Appparatus 5. Equipment Recommendations: The equipment used for the ANOSEAL 9000 solutions should be constructed of stainless steel or other acid resistant material suitable for use at the specified operating temperature. Sufficient mechanical agitation or recirculation is necessary to maintain uniform seal bath temperature. Tanks used for ANOSEAL 9000 should be provided with an adequate exhaust system to protect workers against irritating or corrosive airborne contaminants. ANOSEAL 9000 can be used in plants with nickel recovery equipment, as long as the level of ANOSEAL MT Additive is controlled. See the control procedures in Section 7. Continuous filtration through a 3-10 micron filter is highly recommended. Cartridge filters work extremely well. Please consult with a Henkel Surface Technologies representative for your specific operation parameters according to your sealing quality requirements. 6. Treating with the ANOSEAL 9000 Solution:

3 Buildup: Fill the tank ¾ full with deionized water and adjust the ph to Add 1½ to 4 gallons of ANOSEAL 9000 for each 100 gallons of solution volume, and mix thoroughly. Fill the tank to its final volume, and heat to operating temperature. Measure the ph of the solution and adjust if necessary. Operation: Concentration: % by vol., for clear or electrolytically colored anodize % by vol., for organic dyed anodize. ph: Temperature: F (Optimum 180 F) Time: 5 to 15 minutes (Optimum 10-12) NOTES: 1. Anodic film thickness dictates sealing time as well as the end use of the finished produce, e.g., architectural, residential, decorative anodizing or organic dye. 2. Maintain the ph of the ANOSEAL 9000 bath with acetic acid to lower the ph, or dilute ammonium hydroxide to raise the ph as required. 3. Henkel SC-640 is highly recommended for ph control and is specifically formulated to stabilize and buffer the AS-9000 bath. The SC-640 is usually used at a level of 0.3 to 0.5% by volume. Further information on SC-640 is covered in a separate Technical Process Bulletin. 4. In plants that recover the nickel acetate portion of the ANOSEAL 9000 baths, the smut-preventing properties of ANOSEAL 9000 can be maintained with additions of ANOSEAL MT Additive. However, additions of ANOSEAL MT Additive should only be made as indicated in the control procedure given in Section 7 below. Additions of ANOSEAL MT Additive without the control procedure are not recommended, as too much ANOSEAL MT Additive in the bath can lead to yellowing or discoloration problems. Rinsing: Thorough rinsing is necessary before and after the ANOSEAL 9000 bath to prevent contamination of seal bath, achieve good sealing quality and to extend the life of the bath. The following rinse sequences are recommended; however, rinsing conditions differ from one plant to another depending on the capabilities of each plant. Before Sealing: Three rinse tanks are recommended as follows: First Rinse: Second Rinse: Third Rinse: First rinse after anodizing or after coloring is a spray rinse with good quality city water at room temperature. Overflow 8-10 GPM, good quality city water, room temperature. Overflow 2-4 GPM, deionized water, room temperature, ph ANOSEAL 9000 Solution Control: In plants with continuous production, ph should be checked at least twice per shift, and the ANOSEAL 9000 concentration should be checked at least once per shift.

4 Titration Procedure: 1. Obtain a sample of the operating bath and cool to room temperature. 2. Pipette a 100 ml sample of the cooled ANOSEAL 9000 bath sample into a clean 600 ml beaker. 3. Add approximately 200 ml of distilled water. 4. Add 25 ml of concentrated Reagent Solution 102 and 10 ml of Reagent Solution 1574 and mix thoroughly. 5. Add approximately 0.1 g (2 tablets) of Indicator Stir until dissolved. 6. Titrate with Titrating Solution 1561 until a purple violet color is obtained which persists for seconds. Record the number of ml of Titrating Solution 61 required. 7. CALCULATIONS: % ANOSEAL 9000 by volume = x (ml of 0.1M EDTA). ANOSEAL MT Additive Control: To a stoppered 100 ml graduated cylinder, add the following: a. 5 ml Anoseal 9000 bath solution (filtered if murky) b. 20 ml Reagent Solution 1581 (Methylene chloride) c. 10 ml Indicator 1552 (Indicator Solution R) d. 10 ml Indicator 1551 (Indicator Solution B) Stopper and shake cautiously allowing the release of vapor pressure. The solution will separate into 2 layers; Pink bottom layer and blue to lilac upper layer. Add Titrating Solution 1563 (Cationic Titrant) from a buret in 1 ml increments. Stopper and shake. Allow layers to separate and note bottom color. Do this twice. Continue adding titrant in the same manner, shaking twice until the pink color becomes violet to purple. Add titrant in smaller increments, approximately 0.1 ml, until the bottom layer is sky blue without trace of violet or purple tint. The upper layer will be blue-green to dark green. Record the volume of titrant consumed. Calculation: % by volume Anoseal MT Additive = mls Titrating Solution 1563 X Note: A 2.5% volume Anoseal 9000 bath will contain about 0.3% volume ANOSEAL MT Additive 8. After Sealing: Following seal, a final warm rinse in deionized water at F is recommended to facilitate drying. ph of this rinse should be Performance of the ANOSEAL 9000: The ANOSEAL 9000 process meets the following requirements: 1.
