1 is a water-borne self-crosslinking acrylic copolymer which can be used to formulate clear and pigmented coatings for plastic substrates with a high degree of chemical resistance. can be formulated into coatings that exhibit an excellent balance of properties. Its unique composition makes it ideally suited for applications where DEET* resistance is required. Formulations based on exhibit chemical resistance, hardness and adhesion to a wide variety of plastics. Product characteristics Type - Styrenated acrylic Total solids, by volume - 40 % Density, wet, 25 o C lbs. Heat stability, - Satisfactory 52 C oven 1 month Freeze/thaw stability - Keep from freezing Mechanical stability - Satisfactory VOC, by weight - AMP- 0.3 % Key Benefits - DEET * Resistance - Adhesion to Plastic - Chemical Resistance - Low VOC - Compatible with Polyurethane Dispersions Recommendations for end-use - Suggested Markets: - Automotive Plastics - General Plastics - Sporting Goods * N,N-diethyl meta-toluene-amide (DEET) Main ingredient in most insect repellants Delivery form: 44 % solids in water. 3 FORMULATION SUGGESTIONS Coalescing Solvents The addition of coalescing solvents to is required to form a film. Suggested level is 30-45% on polymer solids. Premixing the solvent with water is recommended to prevent shocking of the polymer. The following co-solvents are suggested: DPM NMP DB (Butyl Carbitol) 35% on resin 30% on resin 30% on resin 40% on resin solids Plasticizers The use of plasticizers with is not required, however, the following plasticizers have been found to be compatible with at these levels: DBP Santicizer 160 Benzoflex 9-88 Suggested Level lbs. /100 gallons lbs. /100 gallons lbs. /100 gallons Use of plasticizers may require additional wetting additive Defoamers The following defoamers are recommended with systems: Defoamers BYK -024 BYK -028 Dehydran 1293 Deefo PI-40 Suggested Level Page 3 of 8

4 Flow and Wetting Agents To improve wetting and flow out on various plastic substrates the following flow and leveling agents are recommended: Flow Aids BYK 346 Fluowet SB* BYK 348 Dow 67 Dynol 604 Suggested Level * Flouwet SB is not DSL listed in Canada Flatteners Flatteners and combination of flatterers can be used to lower the gloss of coatings based on. Bermasilk MK was found to be the flattener of choice, based on its ability to lower the gloss without influencing the rheology or requiring additional co-solvent. A combination of Pergopak M3 and TS-100 (2/1) was found to be most efficient in gloss reduction and abrasion resistance. Addition of a defoamer (e.g. BYK shear-efficient) is highly recommended to avoid air-entrapment during or after TS-100 addition. Additional amount of cosolvents maybe needed based on the oil absorption of the flattener. Starting point level of 5% wt. silica is recommended for gloss reading of 3 to 5 at 60 geometry. The following flatteners are also recommended: Bermasilk MK Acematt TS-100 (non-treated) Acematt OK 412 (surface treated) Acematt OK 520 (surface treated) Pergopak M3 Flat-Ayd FA-34 (pre-dispersed) Pigment Dispersions The following pigments dispersions where found to be compatible with : Universal Color Dispersants (E & Q lines) Elementis Degussa / Creanova Page 4 of 8

5 Pearlescent and Metallic Pigments The following effect pigments have been found to be compatible with : Afflair Mica/Pigment Ekart Rheology Modifiers Rheology modifiers may be incorporated to improve sag resistance, pigment suspension and increase viscosity. DSX 1550 pre-mixed (1/1) with water -using 2-3% on formula weight was found to be very efficient. Additional rheology modifiers recommended are as follows: DSX 1550 Acrysol RM2020 NPR Acrysol RM 825 Adhesion Characteristics exhibits the following adhesion characteristics in Gloss Clear formulation WB Substrates were cleaned with IPA prior to testing. Dry film thickness on each substrate was mils. Films were cured at 77 C for 30 minutes. Adhesion was tested according to ASTM D-3359, method B crosshatch test.
