3 Table of Contents Setting the Standard Standard metric punches are M4 and standard dies are M2 steel. Wilson Tool was the first to provide M4 as its standard tool steel. Many tool manufacturers offer lesser A2 as their standard tool steel and M2 as an upgrade. M2 measures favorably to A2 in wear resistance and has good toughness and compression strength. Alternate Tool Steels can improve productivity and costeffectiveness. Wilson Tool offers stampers three powder metallurgy tool steel upgrades: 3V, 10V and Ultima M4. Each is designed to perform in different situations. TOOL STEELS: Ultima M4: Wilson Tool s patented Ultima M4 tool steel is specially formulated to increase performance and wear resistance, making it ideal for some of the industry s demanding applications. Ultima M4 comes standard on all Xtreme punches and is an available option on all Impax products. M4: Hardened and triple tempered to HRC: Ideal for applications in which both increased toughness and wear resistance are important. 10V: Hardened and double tempered to HRC: Stampers currently using M2 but in need of additional wear resistance may find success with 10V. 3V: Hardened and triple tempered to HRC: Rates comparably to a traditional S7 tool steel in toughness, yet offers better wear resistance and is well suited for punching.187 [4.75mm] and thicker steels. 19 SLUG HUGGER 2 SLUG HUGGER 4L SLUG HUGGER The Slug Hugger 2 die grabs the slug just below the cutting surface of the die and retains the slug during the stripping process. Precision nips extend the entire height of the die, helping to guide the slugs through the relief. The nips hold the slugs in the die and drag them through the relief when the next hit takes place. This allows for less galling and slug packing when stamping materials such as aluminum and galvanized steel. DIE TOP SLUG HUGGER The Slug Hugger 4L retains slugs with the assistance of cavities that have been carved on the inside of the die. These cavities create a vacuum seal that holds the slug in place after the hit occurs. While the 4L can be used with any material thickness, it is ideal for stamping thinner materials and is recommended for clearances of less than.059, [1.5mm]. ORDERING SLUG HUGGER DIES Use the clearance you want and the die type you like. The min. P/W dimension for the Slug Hugger 4L is [1.27mm]. The min. clearance for Slug Hugger 4L shape is [.025mm], a round is [.0] The min. P/W dimension for the Slug Hugger 2 is [.89mm]. Min. clearance for a Slug Hugger 2 shape or round is [.10mm]. Ordering the Slug Hugger option will not affect the lead-time of your order. Simply specify that you d like Slug Hugger 2 or 4L when you place your tooling order. Grind lines of our standard finish are altered so they run parallel to the centerline of the tool. Punches glide smoothly, reducing build-up of loose particles and requiring less pressure for easier stripping. This straight line grind finish is produced by precision grinding parallel with the centerline fo the tool and then indexing the punch in millionths increments to achieve the required shape. It also improves the lubrication-retaining characteristics of the ridges and requires less tonnage for straight shearing. Available alone or in combination with any other finish, this polish improves the finish of any punch by up to 4 microns. This is an ideal solution for forming applications to prevent marring resulting from running metal against metal. Sheer- Perfection is also available on extrusion dies and other internal features. 34

41 COATINGS Coating technology can boost tooling performance to levels far beyond that of untreated tool steels. Optima Developed by Wilson Tool Engineers, Optima is a great choice for most applications. With a micro hardness of 3500 HV, Optima far exceeds the hardness levels that can be achieved with conventional tool steels and may outlast untreated tools by as much as 5-7 times. Optima provides increased wear resistance, improves surface finish and greater resistance to corner breakdown. It has a coefficient of friction 0.3 and a purple to gray color. OptimaX Takes our original Optima coating to the next level. This two part coating process offers all the wear resistance and hardness of Optima plus provides added lubricity and further reduces galling. OptimaX is ideal for stamping material such as aluminum as well as for forming carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless and Aluminum. It has a black color and a coefficient of friction of TiCrN This nano-layer coating with a micro hardness of 4000 HV provides a very high hardness in conjunction with low friction and galling resistance. It has a pale gold/silver color and a coefficient friction of TiCrN is a general purpose coating for piercing and forming applications. TiCrN works well in all types of materials, both ferrous and non-ferrous. Wearbeater This is a Titanium Nitride coating (TiN) with a hardness of 2300 HV. Wearbeater reduces galling on galvanized and soft materials by increasing lubricity. It is used in forming and extrusion applications. Wearbeater has a gold color and a coefficient of friction of 0.4. AlCrN A next generation film which provides excellent hardness and wear resistance when piercing materials such as HSLA and Stainless Steel. ALCrN has a micro hardness of 3200 HV and a Grey color. It has a coefficient of friction of 0.6. AlCrN is substantially tougher than TiAlN and AlTiN, which makes it more suitable for high impact applications. (Note: Not recommended for aluminum applications.) TiZrN The multi-layer film structure of TiZrN gives it exceptional hardness and toughness; it has a micro hardness of 3500 HV. TiZrN was designed for stamping and forming non-ferrous materials like, but not limited to, aluminum, brass and bronze. It has a pale gold color and a coefficient of friction of TiZrN is a great coating for wear resistance. AlTiN and TiAlN These coatings are generally interchangeable and could be considered for use in stainless applications as well as HSLA. They have a hardness of 4500 HV, a dark color and a coefficient of friction of The difference between these coatings is the ratio of aluminum to titanium in the film. By varying the percentages, you get different properties / color. The high hardness makes these coatings a good choice for high temperature applications. (Note: Not recommended for aluminum applications.) 41

42 SELECTING THE RIGHT TOOL STEEL Ever wonder which tool steel is the best fit for your specific stamping application? At some point, you ve hit production snags due to unanticipated retooling downtime. Selecting the best tool steel right from the start to give you the longest production life is critical to the stamping process. And no one knows this better than Impax Tooling Solutions. Tool steels aren t all the same and that s why we enlist a wide range of steels to meet the needs of virtually every conceivable stamping application. All Impax Tooling Solutions punches and dies are crafted from high alloy content tool steels specifically designed to stamp materials at high speeds and resist extreme heat generated at the tool s cutting edge. However, the makeup of tool steels vary significantly in hardness, wear resistance and toughness. M2 Impax Tooling Solutions was one of the first stamping tool manufacturers to provide M2 steel as a standard offering. For many other tool manufacturers, M2 is an upgrade. By making M2 our standard offering, we have raised the bar on requirements for stamping tool steel to provide stampers with better quality tooling. M2 is a conventional high-speed steel, which is hardened and triple tempered to HRC: M2 has good toughness, wear resistance and high compression strength. All of Impax Tooling Solutions tools, including those made from M2 steel, can be coated with its exclusive Optima coating as well as other PVD coatings for improved wear resistance. M4 When the toughness and wear resistance properties of M2 steel aren t enough for some stamping applications, we offer an upgrade to M4 tool steel. A particle metallurgy high-speed steel, M4 is hardened and triple tempered to HRC:62-64, which makes it a better steel for applications that require more toughness, wear resistance and compression strength. Ultima M4 If you are looking for a tool steel even one step above M4, Impax Tooling Solutions offers Ultima M4. Ultima M4 is the best combination of toughness and wear resistance and though it can be used for any job, is specifically designed for high tensile strength applications or for those using abrasive materials. Applications using Ultima M4 result in significantly reduced tool micro chipping, and substantial reductions in downtime and retooling costs due to less frequent tool replacement. In comparison with other steels, Ultima M4 shows 11% more toughness and 25% more wear resistance over PM M4, and it provided an 86% more toughness and 64% more wear resistance over standard M2 steel. 10V 10V steel is the most wear resistant steel offered by Impax Tooling Solutions, also hardened and triple tempered to HRC: Stampers who are successful with M2, but need additional tool life, are prime candidates for 10V. 3V For the highest level of impact resistance, we recommend 3V tool steel, which has relatively good wear resistance and compressive strength. 3V is well suited to stampers who experience chipping and breakage problems with other types of steel such as Stainless, HSLA or Spring Steel or if your design requires you to pierce material thicknesses that are similar to your hole diameter. *Readily available through Impax Tooling Solutions. Other tool steels available upon request. 42
