2 Agenda SYLOID A Series Silica - New Matting Agents for Architectural Coatings Introduction Matting Mechanism Application Performance Summary 2

3 Introduction SYLOID A Series Silica Product Benefits Overview Syloid A Series silica is a result of the superior process knowhow on porous silica technology and management of key physical characteristics of matting agents developed by Grace. Designed to meet technical challenges of matte waterborne architectural coatings having very low gloss and sheen values. Enhanced performance in formulations based on polymer dispersions and emulsions. Non-dusting, easy to disperse, less foam generation and minimum risk of binder coagulation are some of the most appreciated benefits. 3

4 Matting Mechanism How is the Matting Effect Achieved? SYLOID Silica Particles Liquid Coating Dried Film Solvent Evaporation Micro-roughness forms as film shrinks Substrate In traditional S/B systems, coating layer shrinkage occurs during drying as solvent is released. Paint film deforms around silica particles resulting in microrough surface matte effect. 4

5 Matting Mechanism How is the Matting Effect Achieved? Light Source Light Source Substrate Spectral Reflection i.e. 100 Gloss Units Diffuse Reflection i.e. <100 Gloss Units Incident light is diffusely reflected from the micro-rough surface, conveying the impression of low gloss or matte appearance. 5
