17 Copper and Aluminium Welding Technology Breakthrough Example: Fiber lasers for highly reflective material joining Challenge: Aluminium and copper are highly reflective materials, reducing the absorbed light in low brightness welding processes Historically gave poor weld strength and high spatter Unacceptable weld quality Requirements: Welding highly reflective materials requires: higher brightness lasers BUT with less excess heat input improved process stability compared to large spot welding Solution: Single mode, SM fiber lasers deliver significantly higher brightness Dynamic beam forming (or wobble welding) adds stability And distributes the thermal load to match with material properties
