2 2. POSSIBLE HAZARDS 2.1 Classification of the substance Not applicable, no classification. The product contains quartz (crystalline silicon dioxide) impurities, absorbable by alveoli. Handling this substance can give rise to mineral dust containing a fraction of quartz that is absorbable by alveoli. Long-term and/or heavy inhalation of dust containing fractions of quartz that are absorbable by alveoli may lead to silicosis, which is a nodular type of change that takes place in the connective tissue of the lungs. Silicosis is caused by fine quartz dust (Respirable Crystalline Silica, RCS) becoming deposited in the pulmonary air sacs (alveoli). The main symptoms of silicosis are coughing, breathing problems, and shortness of breath. The product should be handled carefully, to avoid raising dust.
