Even highstrength steels need to be effectively weldable, with faultless surfaces, and easy to shape usually by deep-drawing. Using precisely controlled thermal treatment, the microstructure that has solidified during cold rolling is altered to achieve the desired mechanical properties. 4 SMS SIEMAG Strip processing lines HYUNDAI HYSCO, continuous annealing line with record capacity of 1.2 million t/a QUALITY PRODUDUCTS for automotive construction and more This annealing line is part of the steel complex of Hyundai Hysco in Suncheon on Korea s south coast. It was commissioned in 1998 and comes with an annual capacity of 1.2 million t more than any other steel strip annealing line in the world. The plant gives the strip the mechanical properties and flawless surface it requires for further processing. Depending on its dimensions, the strip takes 10 to 45 minutes to pass through the line. That calls for spot-on sequences throughout all process stages. ENTRY SECTION A walking beam conveys the coils at a set rhythm to the uncoiling station. To enable continuous operation of the plant, the two uncoilers are loaded alternately. The strip goes through a pre-leveler that prepares the ends for welding. Here, a cross shear cuts off ends that are too thick or damaged by transport before the strips are welded together into endless strip. STRIP CLEANING Next, a looper takes up the strip and pays it out at defined tension into the triple-level cleaning section. First, the strip is sprayed and brushed. Then it moves through a vertical wet tunnel to the next section, electrolytic cleaning. Another wet tunnel takes it up to the third level, consisting of five-stage cascade rinsing with brush cleaning and strip drying. ENTRY LOOPER Once it has been cleaned, the strip goes into an entry looper with two loop towers that each hold twenty lengths. The entry looper stores up 900 meters of strip to bridge the gaps in the entry section. According to the lengths accumulated, the two loop cars are driven individually. Acceleration forces are effectively compensated by the partly driven deflector rolls. There is a set of tension rolls between the towers to correct any strip tension losses. FURNACE This is where the strip is annealed to a pre-set temperature of up to 850 C and then cooled to 40 C. The annealing process consists of the stages preheating, heating, soaking, cooling, rapid cooling, overaging, and final cooling. 5 The high-performance furnace. EXIT LOOPER The strip travels over a roller system that compensates tension fluctuations and guides it into the exit looper. This consists of two loop towers, each with 24 lengths and a capacity of 1,125 meters of strip. That s plenty to bridge the stops and starts in the exit part of the plant. SKIN-PASS MILL Equally capable of wet or dry skin-pass, the six-high stand achieves a skin-pass degree of up to 3%. The CVC stand comes with two bending systems, one CVC intermediate shifting with thickness and flatness control in a closed control loop, and laser speed measurement for adjusting the degree of skin-pass. It takes just 90 seconds using shifting technology to change the work and intermediate rolls. There is no need for a tension leveler because of the extensive flatness controls available here. That gives you a huge advantage when manufacturing ductile grades for automotive body parts. EXIT ZONE Next in line are the side trimmers, a strip inspection section with an inspection stand, and an oiling machine for surface protection. After that, a flying crank shear cuts the endless strip into lengths. This is also where the welded sections are removed and samples are cut off. As it runs out, two coilers alternately wind the strip with the help of strip binders into straight-edged coils. 6 SMS SIEMAG Strip processing lines SHOUGANG, continuous annealing line for new complex in Peking CLEAN TECHNOLOGY for high-quality cold strip Peking, with some 15 million inhabitants, represents an enormous challenge in terms of environment protection. Also at home in the region, the China Shougang Corporation can be seen as a model for the future with its new, clean works supplied by SMS Siemag. Shougang closed its old complex to the west of Peking and moved to the east of the city. This is where a consortium led by SMS Siemag erected a continuous annealing line and a modern pickling-tandem mill for top-quality cold strip with excellent deep-drawing properties. DEEP-DRAWING COLD STRIP for demanding consumers Most of all, the automotive and household goods industries demand sophisticated steel strip. It must be weldable and formable, with a flawless surface. Continuous annealing gives cold strip its deepdrawing capability. Here is how the process plays out at Shougang. First, cold rolling in the picklingtandem mill also erected by SMS Siemag solidifies the microstructure of the strip. Then, the annealing furnace re-crystallizes the structure and remodels it. Finally, controlled cooling creates the required mechanical properties without affecting the strip flatness or geometry. As a result, the steel is again easily formable. THE ENTRY SECTION The first stage of the process is welding the individual strips into endless strip. This then passes through the multi-stage cleaning station, where impurities left over from cold rolling are removed. Due to intelligent technologies, the water consumption for cleaning is minimal. The strip is paid off the entry looper into the Drever annealing furnace. THE ANNEALING PROCESS Essentially, the annealing process can be broken down into four phases: heating, heat retention, cooling, and overaging. There are specific, automated process sequences and different temperatures, heat retention times, strip speeds and cooling rates for each steel grade. Depending on the type of steel, the strip is heated to temperatures of between 750 und 850 C. It runs over deflector rolls to form loops. This is how we achieve a long process line that still keeps the strip at an exactly constant temperature. That is followed by a cooling zone with a cooling rate relating to the strip of 120 K/s/mm. 7 Drever furnace. THE EXIT SECTION To exclude dust, the exit looper is encased. It leads to a six-high skin-pass mill, a looper that compensates for shear changing times, a side-trimming shear, and an inspection station. Then a DUMA oiling machine coats the strip with oil. As a rule, this machine adds a protective film of an anti-corrosion product or deep-drawing oil. The oil droplets are applied electrostatically thinly, precisely, and contact-free so the surface is never damaged. Finally, a flying crank shear cuts the strip before it runs into the coiling system. 8 SMS SIEMAG Strip processing lines BAOSTEEL continuous annealing line HIGH ANNEALING TEMPERATURES and PROCESS SPEED The continuous annealing line supplied by SMS Siemag to Baosteel (Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd.) produced its first marketable coil in May That was actually earlier than the contractual date for production startup. This line is a key project in the new cold strip complex of the Baosteel works in Boashan District, Shanghai. WIDE PRODUCT RANGE The plant can produce a wide range of thin, coldrolled, deep-drawing sheet with high strengths. It is capable of processing thin products at high annealing temperatures and fast process speeds. That s down to a newly developed, automated process control system. The engineering and technology were provided by SMS Siemag in Europe, while most of the mechanical equipment was manufactured in China under SMS supervision. PLANT PARTS Almost everything in the plant is fully automated. Included here is coil transport to the entry area, removal of the coil binder, and unwinding onto one of the two reels that continuously feed strip into the plant. A pre-leveler assists the threading process, then a welding machine joins the material into an endless strip. There is a multi-phase cleaning stage that completely removes residual cold rolling oils and iron dust. Next in line is the entry looper. It accumulates strip as long as a coil is being unwound. That means if the strip stops briefly during welding in the entry section, the looper still feeds strip continuously into the downstream process stage. The furnace plant as a whole contains about 2,500 meters of strip at any time. After annealing, the microstructure of the steel has recrystallized. Then the strip goes through the exit looper and the integrated six-high skin-pass mill. Our customer can rely on getting the desired material, surface, and flatness properties with SMS Siemag rolling technologies, including CVC intermediate roll shifting, or work and intermediate roll bending. 9 Once again, a small looper keeps the process going smoothly when the strip stops at the inspection station. Before that, a side-trimming shear adjusts the strip width. Then a DUMA oiling machine coats the sensitive surface with anti-corrosion or deep-drawing oil. The flying crank shear cuts the continuous strip into the required lengths. Finally, two coilers wind the annealed and skin-passed steel strip into coils. This sheet metal is used in mechanical, household, and electrical goods construction, but above all in the automotive industry. There is a growing demand here for non-galvanized strip that has gone through best-technology annealing and cooling lines plus high-quality post-treatment. 10 SMS SIEMAG Strip processing lines SHOUGANG JINGTANG Two top-performance annealing lines SUCCESSFUL PRODUCTION START and EXCELLENT RUNUP CURVE Acting as the leader of a consortium, SMS Siemag has been charged with erecting two continuous annealing lines for Shougang Jingtang (Shougang Jingtang United Iron & Steel Co. Ltd.) on the artificial island of Caofeidian Island in Hebei Province, northwestern China. The first line was ordered in 2007, and it annealed its first strip at the end of This plant produces material for various industries, including white goods. Just one year after the first contract was signed, in 2008, Shougang Jingtang ordered another annealing line, due to go on stream in the second half of The steel strip annealed here will mainly go to the automotive industry. TWO ANNEALING LINES Both lines start with an entry section equipped with two payout coilers, a welding machine, a cleaning station, and an entry looper. Each annealing furnace consists of the stages pre-heating, heating, soaking, slow cooling, fast cooling, overaging, final cooling, and water cooling. Depending on the steel grade and strip geometry, special processes are automatically activated with specific temperatures, soaking times, strip speeds, and cooling rates. As early as the second day, the plant delivered coils of commercial standard. Similarly, the exit sections each come with the same elements: exit looper, skin-pass mill, inspection strip looper, side-trimming shear, inspection station, DUMA oiling machine, flying crank shear, and two coilers. SUCCESSFUL STARTUP The big day arrived on August 27, 2009 that s when the very first steel strip was annealed on the newly installed Shougang Jingtang CAL 1. By the end of September 2009, a total of 16,283 t of annealed material had already rolled off the production line. Soon after, in October 2009, output had increased to a total of 30,227 t. Wang Qing, the Managing Director of the Cold Rolling Division of Shougang Jingtang, and his second-in-command Liu Baolin were very satisfied with the fast commissioning and high production figures in the runup phase. 10

Teaming up for this project, the two groups are building a new metallurgical complex on Caofeidian, an artificial island off the coast of Heibei Province in north-east China some 20 km² in size. Included in the works are two blast furnaces, a hot rolling mill, and a pickling-tandem mill. Furthermore, another pickling-tandem mill for the facility was ordered from SMS Siemag in Commissioning is scheduled for View inside the furnace of the continuous annealing line. 11

Apart from conventional annealing lines restricted to recrystallization annealing of carbon steel strip, we also supply combined hot-dip galvanizing and annealing lines. What does this mean for you? It gives you the benefit of a single line that can manufacture two products depending on demand and market situation. You also have the option of retrofitting the hot-dip galvanizing function into your existing annealing line as part of a revamp. MMK Russian steel producer MMK (Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works) has placed an order with SMS Siemag to supply a cold strip complex with a series of strip treatment plants. Not only a hot-dip galvanizing line, but also a combined hot-dip galvanizing and continuous annealing line will be erected in Magnitogorsk in the southern Urals. Included in the plant is a double entry with laser welding machine, as well as pre and main cleaning. Once the strip has passed through this section, it travels into a furnace with pre-heating, heating, retaining, and cooling zones. Then there are two options. Either the hot strip can be fed into a zinc pot, coated with liquid zinc and subsequently cooled. Or it goes into another furnace section, where it is held for 180 s at a temperature of between 270 and 430 C to overage it. That removes carbides from the material to minimize ageing. The annealing treatment ends with final cooling and water cooling. Crucial for MMK is that this combined line features a furnace that can produce qualities every bit as good as a state-of-the-art continuous annealing line. Downstream of this process, the strip can be posttreated as required in a 4-high skin-pass mill, a leveler, a roll-coater, or a Duma oiling machine. SMS Siemag is also supplying the electrical and automation systems. Ahead of delivery, the entire automation set-up is assembled in our test center and thoroughly tested in our Plug & Work process. What is Plug & Work? It simulates the production sequence and enables us to test and optimize all the automation systems under real-life conditions before we install them in your works. 13 HYUNDAI HYSCO Working for Hyundai Hysco in its Dangjin factory, SMS Siemag extensively modernized the annealing line, and upgraded it into a combined annealing and hot-dip galvanizing line. The revamp order was placed in early 2005, and concerned an annealing line that had been abandoned in the middle of construction during the Asian crisis in the mid-nineties. The project was divided into several phases. The first stage was a thorough status analysis. Included here were an assessment of the state of assembly reached in the nineties, an examination of the local conditions, and intensive talks between SMS and the customer s engineers. Then, the new equipment was designed to suit the old plant and future challenges. That generated a wide-ranging overall plan taking in the existing plant, new engineering, and the entire electrical and automation systems. The next step was mechanical modification of the existing CAL so that it can also run as a hot-dip galvanizing line. Only a short time later, on October 13, 2006, the first galvanized strip was produced. 14 SMS SIEMAG Strip processing lines HANDAN, WISCO, ANGANG and TKS HANDAN In 2008, SMS Siemag attracted an order from Handan (Handan Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd.) for a continuous annealing line. It features a Drever annealing furnace in the process section. Commissioning of the plant in Handan, in the southern Chinese Province of Hebei, is scheduled for December WISCO There was reason for celebration at Wisco (Wuhan Iron & Steel Corporation) in Wuhan, Hubei Province in China, on December 18, That s when the first coil was successfully produced on the continuous annealing line supplied by SMS Siemag. Included in the scope of supply were both the mechanical and process engineering, as well as the Drever vertical furnace with cutting-edge annealing and cooling technology. 15 ANGANG Only three months after the start of cold commissioning tests, on April 8, 2006, the first coil was produced on the continuous annealing line SMS Siemag installed at Angang (Angang New Steel Co.) in Liaoning Province, China. The Drever annealing furnace is a special technological highlight. A CVC 6-high skin-pass mill with flatness control ensures excellent strip flatness and surfaces. THYSSENKRUPP STEEL ThyssenKrupp Steel is constructing a new hot and cold strip complex in Alabama, USA. This is a major project, and SMS Siemag is supplying three hot-dip galvanizing lines, two pickling lines, one acid regeneration system, and one continuous annealing line. 16 SMS SIEMAG Strip processing lines YICHANG THREE GORGES orders two continuous annealing lines for ultra-thin strip COLD ROLLING MILL ON THE THREE-GORGES DAM On November 21, 2009 SMS Siemag received an order from Yichang Three Gorges (Yichang Three Gorges Quantong Colored and Galvanized Co. Ltd.) for two annealing lines for the cold rolling complex currently under construction. Both lines process ultra-thin strip sheet that is subsequently electrolytically coated and used as packing material. It s only natural considering the closeness of the three-gorges dam that the lines and the annealing furnace supplied by Drever International will be electrically powered. TWO CONTINUOUS ANNEALING LINES These lines give the strip the necessary properties for further processing. The recrystallization annealing and downstream post-treatment eliminate the strain hardening in the material from the rolling process. This is also how the mechanical properties and surface quality are influenced. The special feature here is that the lines can process ultra-thin strip (down to 0.14 mm) at a fast continuous process speed (600 m/min), yet still meet high quality demands. Both feature almost identical equipment, and will be installed side-by-side with the same strip direction. However, they are set up as mirror images so that the drive sides are inside of the two lines and the control sides outside. SCOPE OF SUPPLY AND SERVICES It s a major order, with SMS Siemag supplying the design and manufacturing of the mechanical equipment, and well as carrying out assembly and commissioning. The two annealing furnaces from Drever International will not be operated as usual with gas, but with electricity. Particularly worth mentioning is a newly developed technology that recovers heat from the gas cooling zones for recycling in the pre-heating zones. That saves a significant amount of energy. 16

17 One of the world s largest dams: The Three-Gorges Dam. YICHANG THREE GORGES The private enterprise Yichang Three Gorges is building an all-inclusive cold rolling mill in central southern China. It s located very close to the Three-Gorges Dam and the city of Yichang in Hubei Province, and will process purchased hot strip. The dam of the Yangtze river in the three-gorges area is one of the world s largest dams.
