Figure 1 shows uptake and release curves for 500ppbv of methyl mercaptan, an active sulfur compound, in a gas stream passing through a variety of tubing substrates. 3 Fittings Tube fittings can be a source of sulfur and mercury adsorption and sample loss. Exposed fitting surfaces will react with active compounds at ppb and ppm levels like sulfur, H2S, NOx and mercury resulting in sample loss, inaccurate readings, delayed response and false positive readings due to memory effects in tubing and fittings. Figure 3 shows how memory of adsorbed active compounds (such as sulfur, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and mercury) can cause long delays in equilibrating a sample stream. Figure 3 demonstrates the memory effects of electropolished (EPS), standard, and SilcoNert 2000 treated electropolished stainless steel tubing. The SilcoNert 2000 treated tubing shows less retention of sulfur compounds by several orders of magnitude, indicating very high inertness. While the EPS and standard tubing show significant methyl mercaptan spikes several minutes after shutting off methyl mercaptan flow.
