1 Research Article TEMPLATE GROWTH OF COPPER NANOWIRES AND EXOTIC PATTERNS OF METALLIC COPPER USING ELECTRODEPOSITION TECHNIQUE VIRK H. S.* Address for Correspondence Nanotechnology Laboratory, DAV Institute of Engineering & Technology, Kabir Nagar, Jalandhar , India ABSTRACT Electrodeposition technique based on the principle of electroplating was adopted for copper nanowire fabrication in an electrochemical cell designed in our laboratory. Copper is one of the most important metals in modern electronic technology. Keeping in view its role in nanoelectronics, we have fabricated copper nanowires of diameters 20, 100 and 200nm using Anodic Alumina and polymer membranes as templates. During our experiments, we observed that when we failed to fabricate nanowires, what we got was some exotic patterns of metallic copper in the shape of copper buds, flowers or polycrystalline crystals. The morphology of these patterns is revealed by SEM micrographs with some interesting features. We are looking for an appropriate explanation to understand this phenomenon. KEYWORDS: Copper nanowires, Electrodeposition, Anodic alumina and Polymer templates, Polycrystalline copper. INTRODUCTION During recent years, nanowires and nanorods of metallic and semi-conducting materials have drawn a lot of research interest because of their potential applications in diverse fields, for example, nanoelectronics, optoelectronics and sensors [1-2]. Copper is one of the most important metals in modern electronic technology. Fabrication of copper nanowires [3-6] is one of the most important thrust areas of nanotechnology because of their potential use in the micro/nanoelectronics industry and, in particular, for interconnection in electronic circuits. Many methods have been developed for the fabrication of copper nanowires but template synthesis is considered to be the most suitable and useful for growth of nanowires. Electrochemical deposition route is easy, low-cost as well as less cumbersome compared to other fabrication techniques, namely, pulsed laser deposition (PLD), vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) method and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) [1]. Electrochemical cell used in electrodeposition of copper into pores of anodic alumina template was fabricated in our laboratory. Morphology of electrodeposited copper nanowires has been studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The diameter of nanowires depends upon the pore size of template. Anodic alumina discs of 200 nm pore diameter and polymer membranes of 20 and 100 nm pore diameter were selected for this purpose. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Electrodeposition technique used in our experiment is similar in principle to that used for the electroplating process. Commercial anodic alumina membranes (Anodisc 25 made by Whatman) having an average pore diameter of 200 nm, a nominal thickness of 60 µm and pore density of 10 9 pores/ cm 2, were used as templates. A second set of polymer membranes was selected for the sake of comparison. Commercially available polycarbonate membranes (Sterlitech, USA) of 25 mm diameter with pore density of 10 8 pores/ cm 2 and pore diameter of 100 nm were selected for this experiment. The electrochemical cell, fabricated in our laboratory using Perspex sheets, was washed in double distilled water. A copper rod of 0.5 cm diameter was used as a sacrificial electrode (anode). The cathode consists of copper foil attached to alumina disc by an adhesive tape of good conductivity. The electrolyte used had a composition of 20 gm/100ml CuSo 4.5H 2 O + 25% of dilute H 2 So 4 at room temperature. The inter-electode distance was kept 0.7 cm and a current of 2mA was applied for 10 minutes. The anodisc was kept immensed in 1 M NaOH for 3 hours in a beaker to dissolve alumina template. The copper nanowires were liberated from the host matrix, washed in distilled water and dried in an oven at 50 0 C for 30 minutes. The cleaned and dried nanowires were mounted on aluminium stubs with the help of double adhesive tape, sputtered with a layer of gold using JEOL sputter JFC Scanning electron microscope (JEOL, JSM 6100) was used to record top and side views of grown nanowires at an accelerating voltage of 20kV using different magnifications. Experiment was repeated using polycarbonate membranes as templates and keeping the other conditions identical. The polymer template was dissolved in dichloromethane to liberate copper nanowires from the host matrix. The rest of the procedure is same. Polycarbonate membranes with pore diameter of 20 and 100 nm were used for growth of copper nanowires but the results were quite astounding. XRD characterization technique was used to
2 study crystal structure of nanowires and pyramid shaped copper crystals. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Commercial available templates were examined before their use using AFM and SEM. Atomic force microscopic technique [7] shows the two dimensional surface topology of the anodic alumina template with hexagonal pores regularly arranged on the surface. The pores appear nearly at the centre of each hexagonal cell (Fig. 1a). After gold sputtering, the SEM micrograph (Fig. 1b) shows the geometrical pattern of pores on the aluminium surface of anodisc. Electrodeposition of copper nanowires depends on many factors, namely, inter-electrode spacing, electrolyte composition and ph value, current density and time of deposition. To achieve uniform deposition of nanowires, templates were cleaned in the ultrasonic bath for 10 minutes. After cleaning, the templates were fixed to the adhesive copper tape to make it a perfect cathode. Copper nanowires were examined under SEM under different magnifications. Fig. 2 (a) shows a typical top view of copper nanowires grown in alumina template. Fig.2 (b) represents the lateral or side view of nanowires. Obviously, the diameter of copper nanowires is identical to the diameter of pores (200 nm) of anodisc. Nanowires are quite uniform but they are not perfect cylinders. It has been reported [8] that pore diameters of commercially available templates vary over a large range. The aspect ratio, that is, the ratio of length to diameter, is on the order of 300. Fig.1(a). 3 We repeated the experiment for 20 and 100 nm pore diameter polycarbonate template. Due to overdeposition of copper into pores, we failed to grow copper nanowires. Instead, what we achieved was quite interesting. Fig.3 (a, b) shows SEM micrographs of copper microflowers of various shapes and sizes grown in polymer templates of 100 nm diameter. Another interesting feature is mushroom-like growth of copper buds (Fig. 4). The growth of flower-like ZnO crystals has been reported by some authors [9-12]. It is also reported [13] that overdeposition of copper in polymer templates may lead to metallic micro-rose having petals in nanometer dimensions. (a) (b) Fig.3 (a, b) SEM micrographs showing copper microflowers due to overdeposition Fig. 4 SEM micrograph showing copper buds (mushroom effect) There is as yet no specific theory to explain exotic patterns developed during electrodeposition of copper in anodic alumina or polymer templates. A speculative explanation [14] is provided on the basis of overdeposition. During the growth of copper nanowires in the template pores, the current remains nearly stable until the wires arrive at the template surface. If the electrodeposition process is not stopped at this stage, the current keeps on rising very gradually leading to overdeposition of copper. The exotic patterns in the form of microflowers having their petals in nanometer dimension, copper buds leading to mushroom effect and double pyramid shaped copper crystals have been observed in our investigations. We repeated the experiment for 20 nm pore diameter polycarbonate template. The template was not coated with a conducting layer during electrodeposition. It resulted in failure to grow nanowires but the failure of experiment proved to be a blessing in disguise. Instead of copper nanowires, we observed growth of double pyramid shaped copper crystals (Fig. 5). We could not find any evidence for this phenomenon in literature. XRD spectrum (Fig. 6) shows two prominent peaks corresponding to 2θ = and , with d spacing = and 1.804, respectively. These peaks reveal the polycrystalline nature of copper crystals, indicating that preferred growth direction of crystals is the (200) plane. Template based synthesis of single crystal copper nanowires has been reported in literature [14-16] with preferred growth direction along (111) plane, but to the best of our knowledge, there is hardly any report for copper nanowire arrays or copper crystals with a (200) preferred orientation.
4 Fig. 5. SEM micrograph of pyramid shaped polycrystalline copper crystals Fig. 6. XRD spectrum of polycrystalline copper crystals CONCLUSIONS Template synthesis is an elegant method for fabrication of copper nanowires using anodic alumina or polymer templates. The failure to grow copper nanowires, either due to experimental limitations or intentionally, leads to some big surprises in the form of microflowers, buds and polycrystalline copper crystals. Overdeposition plays sterling role in the growth of exotic patterns of copper. Further studies are required to investigate and exploit the useful applications of these patterns in nanotechnology.
