8 How Flame Retardants Work Flame Retardant solutions extinguish fire by addressing one or more legs of the fire triangle. Oxygen These include additives and compounds that contain Chlorine (Cl), Bromine (Br) and Fluorine (F). Often used with a synergist, halogenated molecules extinguish fire by decomposing to form radicals that trap oxygen and essentially snuff out the flame. Halogens are very efficient. The radical formation is re-generative; therefore one molecule can be reused many times.
