Sealant and S e c t i o n 1 OVERVIEW This Product Application Note (PAN) provides guidance in the determination of edge deletion requirements and compatible insulating glass sealants for Guardian Residential Coated Glass Products. This PAN also includes general guidelines for successful edge deletion of products for which deletion is required. S e c t i o n 2 EDGE-DELETION GUIDELINES 2.1. Guardian Residential low-e products are designed for use in either annealed or heat-treated states. Edge-deletion requirements for the two conditions vary based on the product and application Standard (non-heat treatable) Residential low-e and UV-blocking coated products manufactured by Guardian can be insulated without edge deletion in annealed applications utilizing the list of tested sealants in Table Standard (non-heat treatable) Residential low-e coated products manufactured by Guardian that have been coated after tempering by Guardian can also be insulated without edge deletion utilizing the list of tested sealants in Table Heat-treatable Residential low-e coated products have varying edge deletion requirements. Please refer to Table 1 for individual product requirements Table 1 of this PAN outlines the edge-deletion recommendations for all Guardian Residential Coated Glass products in conjunction with currently tested sealants. Edge deletion is not required when the coated product is used with tested and approved sealant systems in the fabrication of insulated glass units for residential applications. Edge deletion of the coated glass product is required when using sealants not on the approved list The fabricator bears responsibility with the design and test of the window frame to ensure that an adequate weep system and setting blocks are included. A good drainage and isolation system allows for the proper and expedient evacuation of liquids away from the exposed edge while minimizing the contact between the insulated glass unit and the substance. Acidic substances such as brick wash have the potential to cause harm to several window components, such as hardware, sealants, and low-e coatings. Windows should be masked off and brick wash should be properly diluted and applied per manufacturer instructions. If these conditions cannot be met, glass with Low-E coatings should be proactively edge deleted to minimize potential damage to the Low-E coating or IG. 1
S e c t i o n 3 THE SIGHT LINE AND EDGE DELETION METHODS 3.1. Edge deletion is intended to remove a band of coating that is equal to the sight line. For residential applications, edge deletion is required for optimal adhesion between the glass and the sealant. The fabricator is responsible for setting an acceptable tolerance for the edge-deletion band when edge-deleting a coated product. An edge-deletion band greater than the sight line will result in an encroachment into the vision area of the unit. Alternatively, an edge-deletion band that is too narrow could result in poor adhesion or sight line discoloration. Figure 2. Band 3.2 For heat-treated Residential coated product applications requiring edge deletion, automated post-furnace edge deletion on an insulating glass line is preferred. Post-furnace edge deletion is preferred to avoid the buildup of additional heat on the uncoated edge of the glass during the heat-treatment process. 3.3 If edge deletion is done with manual (hand-style) grinding equipment, care must be taken to ensure that the deletion is complete and consistent. 3.4 If you require additional information on edge-deletion methodologies including the use of automated systems when edge-deletion is integrated into the glass cutting operation for Guardian s Residential coated products with Temporary Protective Film (TPF), please contact you local Guardian Field Customer Engineer or Guardian Flat Glass Applications at (888)
S e c t i o n 4 STANDARD EDGE DELETION PROCEDURE 4.1 Proper fabrication techniques outlined in the Fabricator s User s Guide must be followed in processing of all Guardian Residential coated glass products. 4.2 Edge deletion can be accomplished through three different methods. In all cases, the fabricator must ensure that the edge deletion is complete and consistent. The options are: Using in-line CNC edge deletion at the cutting table or prior to the IG assembly step Using a standalone table, available from a number of suppliers Using hand-held edge deletion tools. 4.3 The coated surface must always be edge-deleted face up (away from conveyor rolls, felt covers or roller balls. It is also important to verify the coated surface with a coating detector to make sure that the coated side is the side being edge-deleted (Figure 3). 4.4 Determine the sight line for the units being manufactured and the tolerance required. For example, the sightline is approximately 12 mm (1/2 in.) in the example shown in Figure 4. Figure 3. Coating Detector Figure 4. Determining the Site Line with a Spacer 3
4.5 Use an edge-deletion wheel such as 3M Part# in. OD x ½ in. W x 3 in. ID SST (shown in Figure 5). Actual width of wheel will vary depending upon edge deletion/sight line width desired. Figure 5. 3M Part #03991 Wheels 4.6 Remove the coating by grinding the edge completely and continuously using automated or manual grinding equipment. 4.7 To determine whether the coating has been completely removed from the edge, the edge-deleted area must be tested with an ohmmeter as shown in Figure 6. The ohmmeter must show no reading, which indicates complete removal of the coating. If the ohmmeter shows a reading, edge deletion is incomplete. Figure 6. Testing the Edge for Complete Coating Removal with an Ohmmeter 4
4.8 Glass must be handled from the edges only during the edge deletion process. Care must be taken to avoid touching or palming the coated surface. Figure 7. Manual Table Figure 8. 6 S e c t i o n 5 SEALANT GUIDELINES 5.1 Insulating glass sealants utilize different chemical formulations to achieve the desired adhesion and cure-time objectives. These chemicals may compromise the metallic layers that comprise low-e coatings. For this reason, only approved sealants listed in Table 1. should be used with non-edge deleted Residential Coated Glass Products. 5.2 The ClimaGuard SPF coated glass product has a lower surface energy than float glass or Low-E glass. Surface energy is a thermodynamic effect of how a substance will "wet out" on a given surface Reduced surface energy materials limit how a substance, like an adhesive, "wet out" on its surface. The better an adhesive can "wet out" on a substrate, the larger the surface area it can cover. This coverage allows a larger number of reactive groups to attract and bond, making for a stronger and durable interface Depending on the spacer and sealant system being used by the fabricator, ClimaGuard SPF may appear to initially have a low adhesion after the initial assembly of the insulated glass unit. However, the adhesion will improve with time, temperature and/or humidity. The risk of glass separation on a glazed and fully cured insulated glass unit is extremely low Although the ClimaGuard SPF coating does not contain metallic layers, non-edge deleted use should also be limited to the approved sealants listed in Table 1. 6

Non-edge deleted ClimaGuard SPF requires a 21 day curing time when used in conjunction with TruSeal DuraSeal, DuraLite, and Swiggle flexible spacer systems. The combination of the coating chemistry and the adhesive used with these spacer systems dictate that sufficient time is allocated for the adhesive to wet-out and properly bond to the coated surface. Additional curing time may be required when IG units are manufactured (or when finished units will be stored) in temperatures 40 F / 4 C. As other sealants are tested, they will be added to the list. For the most current listing, contact your local Guardian certification engineer or Guardian Flat Glass Applications at (888) Green boxes with a (+) indicate No Required. Red boxes with a (-) indicate that edge-deletion is mandatory. 7
S e c t i o n 6 SEALANT EVALUATION PROCESS Please contact your local Guardian Field Customer Engineer or Guardian Flat Glass Applications if you need assistance with testing of sealants not listed in Table 1. Guardian will arrange testing of any specific sealants currently used in manufacturing insulated glass units upon request. Normal testing takes weeks to complete once the units are received by Guardian. A flow chart depicting the sealant evaluation process is included below for reference.
