1 Coss-Rolle Ring Seies Compact, Highly Rigid Swivel Ring Achieving a Supeb Rotation Accuacy Fo details, visit THK at Poduct infomation is updated egulaly on the THK website. CATALOG No.382-5E
2 Coss-Rolle Ring Model RU,RB,RE,RA and RA-C This Coss-Rolle Ring can eceive loads in any diections with high otational accuacy. Suitable fo the joints of industial obot and high pecision otay table. Inne ing Oute ing Rolle Space etaine Stuctue of Coss-Rolle Ring Model RB Stuctue and Featues With the Coss-Rolle Ring, cylindical olles ae aanged with each olle pependicula to the adjacent olle, in a 90 V goove, sepaated fom each othe by a space etaine. This design allows just one beaing to eceive loads in all diections including adial, axial and moment loads. Since the Coss-Rolle Ring achieves high igidity despite the minimum possible dimensions of the inne and oute ings, it is optimal fo applications such as joints and swiveling units of industial obots, swiveling tables of machining centes, otay units of manipulatos, pecision otay tables, medical equipment, measuing instuments and IC manufactuing machines. Concept of the Coss Rolle Ring The Coss-Rolle Ring is a high-igidity, compact, and easy-to-use poduct designed based on the double cone olle beaing and angula contact ball beaing which had been popula. Double ow cone olle beaing Combined angula ball beaing Modeled Compacted Coss-Rolle Ring (Model RB) Coss-Rolle Ring Angula ball beaing Cone olle beaing Width dimension Rigidity Basic load ating Rotational speed 1
3 High Rotation Accuacy The space etaine fi tting among coss-aayed olles pevents olles fom skewing and the otational toque fom inceasing due to fiction between olles. Unlike conventional types using steel sheet etaines, the Coss-Rolle Ring does not cause unilateal contact of olle o seize. Thus, even unde a peload, the Coss-Rolle Ring povides stable otation toque. Easy Handling The inne and oute ings, which ae sepaable, ae secued to the Coss-Rolle Ring body afte being installed with olles and space etaines in ode to pevent the ings fom sepaating fom each othe. Thus, it is easy to handle the ings when installing the Coss-Rolle Ring. Skewing Pevention The space etaine keeps olles in thei pope position, theeby peventing them fom skewing (tilted olles). This eliminates fiction between olles, thus allowing the smooth motion to be achieved. Rolle Space etaine Inceased Rigidity The olles ae aanged cosswise to the adjacent olle, so one beaing can eceive the load in each diection. It inceases the igidity to thee to fou times geate than the conventional type compaed with the angula ball beaings installed in double ows. 4 Lage Load Capacity (1) The poduct with space etaine adopted in the coss olle ing can have a longe effective contact length of each olle, thus signifi cantly inceasing the load capacity than poducts with conventional steel sheet etaines. The space etaine guides olles by suppoting them ove the entie length of each olle, wheeas the conventional type of etaine suppots them only at a point at the cente of each olle. Such one-point contact cannot suffi ciently pevent skewing. Rolle contact length l 1 l 1 l 2 l 2 l 1 l 2 With a space etaine With a steel sheet etaine (conventional) (2) In the poduct with space etaine, the loaded aeas ae symmetical between the oute ing and the inne ing sides aound the olle longitudinal axis, which makes the distibution of load moe even than poducts with conventional steel sheet etaines, thus making end-face contact diffi cult to occu. Theefoe, the wea is little and the otational motion is smooth. 5 Types of the Coss-Rolle Ring Types and Featues Model RU (Integated Inne/Oute Ring Type) The integated design of the unit s inne and oute ings is adopted and the unit can be fi xed using the mounting holes of the inne and oute ings. It eliminates the need fo a pessue flange o housing. Also it is not influenced by the pats accuacy and no assembly eo occus, which enables highly accuate, smooth, and easy assembly of the otation unit. Can be used fo both oute and inne ing otation. Model RU Model RB (Sepaable Oute Ring Type fo Inne Ring Rotation) This is the basic fom of the Coss-Rolle Ring, in which the oute ing ae double-slit and the oute ing is integated. This model is used in locations whee the otational accuacy of the inne ing is equied. It is used, fo example, in the swivel potions of index tables of machine tools. Model RB Model RE (Two-piece Inne Ring Type fo Oute Ring Rotation) Main dimensions of the Coss-Rolle Ring ae the same as model RB and its inne ing is double-slit and its oute ing is integated. This model is used in locations whee the otational accuacy of the oute ing is equied. Model RE 4
6 USP-Gade Seies of Models RB and RE The otation accuacy of the USP-Gade Seies achieves the ulta pecision gade that supasses the highest accuacy standads such as JIS Class 2, ISO Class 2, DIN P2 and AFBMA ABCE9. Model RA (Sepaable Oute Ring Type fo Inne Ring Rotation) A compact type simila to model RB with the thinnest possible inne and oute ings. Suitable fo locations equiing a lightweight and compact design such as the swivel potions of obots and manipulatos. Model RA-C (Single-Split Type) The main dimensions ae the same as that of model RA and the cost is low with its Singlesplit Oute Ring stuctue. Model RA Model RA-C 5

30 Designing the Housing and the Pesse Flange Since the Coss-Rolle Ring is a compact, thin device, special consideation must be given to the igidity of the housing and the pesse fl ange. With types having a sepaable oute ing, insufficiency in the stength of the housing, pessue flange o the pesse bolt will esult in the inability to evenly hold the inne o oute ing, o the defomation of the Coss-Rolle Ring when a moment load is applied. Consequently, the contact aea of the olles will become uneven, causing pefomance to signifi cantly deteioate. Housing When designing the thickness of the housing, make sue it is at least 60% of the sectional height of the Coss-Rolle Ring as a geneal guide. Housing thickness T= D d o geate (D: oute of the oute ing; d: inne of the inne ing) If geate stiffness is desied, both the thickness of the housing and the fi tting toleance must be consideed. Please contact THK when making such consideations. [Shoulde Design] When designing the shoulde, ensue that the shaft shoulde (φds) is inside the aceway, and that the housing shoulde height (φdh) ae outside the aceway. If the shoulde appoaches the aceway, then an uneven load may apply, esulting in a faulty otation. Fo the shoulde dimensions, see the coesponding specification table. Raceway φ ds φ Dh Tapped Hole fo Ring Removal By including tapped holes fo inne and oute ing emoval, it becomes possible to emove the ings without damaging the Coss-Rolle Ring. 32 Pesse Flange and Pesse Bolt When detemining the thickness of the pesse flange (F) o the cleaance of the flange section (S), efe to the dimensions indicated below as a guide. As fo the numbe of the pesse bolts, the geate the numbe of the bolts, the moe stable the system becomes. As a guide, howeve, it is nomally appopiate to use the numbe of bolts indicated in Table and equidistantly aange them. S H F B F = B 0.5 to B H = B -0.1 S = 0.5 mm Even if the shaft and the housing ae made of light alloy, it is ecommendable to select a steelbased mateial fo the pesse fl ange. When assembling model RU, use the mounting holes o tapped holes built on the inne and oute ings (model RU does not equie a pesse fl ange). When tightening the pesse bolts, fimly secue them using a toque wench o the like so that they will not loosen. Table shows tightening toques fo the housing and pesse fl anges made of typical steel mateials with medium hadness. (2) Fo the details of the suface teatment, see the geneal catalog. (3) Note that in the case of standad model RU and special models, it is diffi cult to povide suface teatment to mounting holes built on the inne and oute ings, geasing holes, etc., and a teated film may not be fomed on these aeas. (4) Poduct accuacy (dimensional accuacy, otational accuacy) is only guaanteed pio to suface teatment. 31
33 Pocedue fo Assembly When assembling the Coss-Rolle Ring, follow the steps below. [Pepaations befoe assembly] (1) Thooughly clean the housing and othe assembly pats, and make sue thee ae no bus. (2) Loosen the bolts that pevent sepaation of the Coss-Rolle Ring. (3) If the two divided pats of the oute o inne ing ae misaligned at the joints, coect the misalignment by gently hitting the ing with a plastic hamme o the like, and then install it. (Fo a type secued with ivets, install it as-is.) [Installing the Coss-Rolle Ring into the Housing o onto the Shaft] Since the Coss-Rolle Ring has a thin-walled stuctue, it is easily tilted duing insetion. Use a plastic hamme o simila tool to level the Coss-Rolle Ring by gadually hammeing the peimete while inseting. Caefully hamme until the sound of the ing coming into full contact with the mounting suface can be veified. Note) When inseting the inne ing, hamme the inne ing. When inseting the oute ing, hamme the oute ing. [Assembly diections fo RU] Model RU has insetion holes fo installing olles in the oute ing. (Fille plugs ae attached.) Position the mounting diection so that the fille plugs do not ovelap with the aea unde maximum load. (The peiphey of the plugged section is slightly ecessed, and a fixing pin is diven into its side.) [Assembly diections fo RA C] The oute ing of model RA C has a slit fo installing olles. Position the mounting diection so that the split section does not ovelap with the aea unde maximum load. (The split section has two small holes on the side maked with the poduct name.) [Attaching the Pesse Flange] (1) Fit the pesse fl ange to the single piece ing (inne ing on models RB/RA, oute ing on model RE). In case of model RU, fit the pesse flange to the otational axis side. (2) Place the pesse fl ange onto the Coss-Rolle Ring. Rock the fl ange seveal times to match the bolt holes. Also in case of model RU, ock the fl ange seveal times to match the bolt holes. (3) Inset the pesse bolts into the holes. Manually tun the bolts and make sue they do not show skewing caused by misalignment of the holes. (4) Fasten the pesse bolts in thee to fou steps fom loose to fully fastened by tightening the bolts in a diamond patten, as shown in Fig. When tightening the sepaated inne o oute ing, ecipocating the single piece oute o inne ing appoximately fou to fi ve times (about 90 ) will coect misalignment between the ing and the body. 36 Pecautions on Use [Handling] (1) Please use at least two people to move any poduct weighing 20 kg o moe, o use a dolly o anothe conveyance. Doing so may cause injuy o damage. (2) The inne and oute ings, which ae compised of two pats, ae held togethe with a special ivet o scews, so install as is. Incoect installation of the space etaine will geatly affect otational pefomance, do not disassemble the Coss Rolle Ring. (3) Take cae not to dop o stike the Coss Rolle Ring. Doing so may cause injuy o damage. Giving an impact to it could also cause damage to its function even if the poduct looks intact. (4) When handling the poduct, wea potective gloves, safety shoes, etc., as necessay to ensue safety. [Pecautions on Use] (1) Pevent foeign mateial, such as cutting chips o coolant, fom enteing the poduct. Failue to do so may cause damage. (2) If the poduct is used in an envionment whee cutting chips, coolant, coosive solvents, wate, etc., may ente the poduct, use bellows, coves, etc., to pevent them fom enteing the poduct. (3) Do not use the poduct at tempeatue of 80 o highe. Exposue to highe tempeatues may cause the esin/ubbe pats to defom/be damaged. (4) If foeign mateial such as cutting chips adhees to the poduct, eplenish the lubicant afte cleaning the poduct. (5) Slight ocking can inhibit the fomation of a film of oil between the olling suface and the aea of contact, esulting in fetting. THK ecommends peiodically otating the coss olle ing seveal times to help ensue that a film foms on the sufaces and olling elements. (6) Do not use undue foce when fi tting pats (pin, key, etc.) to the poduct. This may geneate pemanent defomation on the aceway, leading to loss of functionality. (7) The matching mak of the inne o oute ing may be slightly misaligned when deliveed. In that case, loosen the bolts that secue the inne o oute ing, and coect the alignment using a plastic hamme o the like, befoe installing it to the housing. (Let the secuing ivets follow the housing.) (8) When installing the Coss-Rolle Ring, inset the ing by hammeing the ing that is to be fixed (i.e.hamme the inne ing if the inne ing is to be fi xed, o hamme the oute ing if the oute ing is to be fixed). Hammeing the ing on the wong side may cause damage. (9) Insuffi cient igidity o accuacy of mounting membes causes the beaing load to concentate on one point, and the beaing pefomance will dop signifi cantly. Accodingly, give sufficient consideation to the igidity/accuacy of the housing and base and stength of the fixing bolts. (10)When installing o emoving the Coss Rolle Ring, do not apply foce to the fixing ivets o the bolts. (11)When mounting the pesse flange, take into account the dimensional toleances of the pats so that the flange fi mly holds the inne and oute ings fom the side. [Lubication] (1) Do not mix diffeent lubicants. Mixing geases using the same type of thickening agent may still cause advese inteaction between the two geases if they use diffeent additives, etc. (2) When using the poduct in locations exposed to constant vibations o in special envionments such as clean ooms, vacuum and low/high tempeatue, use the gease appopiate fo the specification/envionment. (3) The consistency of gease changes accoding to the tempeatue. Take note that the toque of the Coss Rolle Ring also changes as the consistency of gease changes. (4) Since each Coss Rolle Ring unit contains high-quality lithium soap goup gease No. 2, initial geasing is not needed. Howeve, the poduct equies egula lubication since it has a smalle intenal space than odinay olle beaings and because the olles need fequent lubication due to thei olling contact stuctue. To eplenish gease, it is necessay to access geasing holes that lead to the oil gooves fomed on the inne and oute ings. As fo the lubication inteval, nomally eplenish the same type of gease so that it is distibuted thoughout the inteio at least evey thee to six months. Set the fi nal lubication inteval/amount based on the actual machine. When the beaing is fi lled up with gease, the initial otational toque tempoaily inceases due to gease esistance. Howeve, suplus gease will un off of the seals and the toque will etun to the nomal level in a shot peiod. The thin type does not have an oil goove. Secue an oil goove in the inne side of the housing fo lubication. 35
37 [Stoage] When stoing the Coss Rolle Ring, enclose it in a package designated by THK and stoe it in a oom in a hoizontal oientation while avoiding high tempeatue, low tempeatue and high humidity. Afte the poduct has been in stoage fo an extended peiod of time, lubicant inside may have deteioated, so add new lubicant befoe use. [Disposal] Dispose of the poduct popely as industial waste.
