2 Stick electrodes for welding of heat resistant steels Heat resistant steels can be divided into 3 groups on the basis of their composition, structure and dependent properties: 1. Ferrous Steels 2. Austenitic ferrous steels 3. Austenitic steels A decision as to which steel should be used should not be made on the basis of processibility. Of greater significance are weldability along with chemical resistance to the corrosive material. Temperature and furnace atmosphere will need consideration along with these. The choice of an appropriate stick electrode is hence as important as the choice of an appropriate base metal. In general terms the filler metals used are appropriate for the base metal in terms of chemical composition. Austenitic base metals can be welded with filler metals of the saure type without preheating. With assembly welds to heat resistant Cr. Steel it should be noted that this tends to coarse grain formation in the direct vicinity of the weld seam and hence to brittleness.
