1 DUAL MEDIA FILTER This Filter is designed for removal of Turbidity & Iron. Maximum Iron as Fe 1.0 PPM Maximum Turbidity 25 PPM For effective removal Oxidation Chamber & Coagulant addition, ph Correction, aeration have o employed prior to filtration. Pressure sand filter has limited dirt removal as the finest sand from the top most layer and as much most layer and as such most of the Turbidity is deposited on the top surface resulting in cake formation In Case of Dual Media Filter a 300 mm layer of coarse anthracite is provided on top of fine sand. The advantage of providing anthracite layer is 1. The coarse anthracite does pre filtration and removes most of turbidity from water before the water comes in contact with fine sand 2. The coarse anthracite is provided for holding higher amount of turbidity within the bed. The anthracite being coarse provided less pressure drop. 2 BIRM MEDIA FILTER This Filter is designed for removal of Turbidity & Iron. Maximum Iron as Fe 3.0 PPM Maximum Turbidity 25 PPM For effective removal Oxidation Chamber & Coagulant addition, ph Correction, aeration have o employed prior to filtration. In Case of Birm Media Filter a 300 mm layer of coarse anthracite & 300 mm of Birm is provided on top of fine sand. Birm Media Filter is specially designed for removal of Iron (> 2 PPM). They employ an advance multi media bed for the same, consisting birm media Birm is an aluminum silicate media coated with manganese dioxide. This coating is highly concentrated with oxygen and acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen and the iron compounds. In essence, the dissolved iron is oxidized at the surface of the media into a rust particle that can be effectively filtered from the water. The precipitated iron and manganese can then be easily removed from the system during backwash. 3 ACTIVATED CARBON FILTER Activated Carbon Filter is most widely used filter for absorption of impurities. In water treatment Activated Carbon is employed for. 1. Dechlorination 2. Removal of Organics 3. Removal of Order The specific velocity to be employed depends upon the use as well as the treated water quality desired. It also depends upon the nature of activated carbon in terms of its pore size, degrees of activation, poetical size & bed death Typically we use the following design parameters: Maximum Service Velocity For Dechlorination : 15 mtr/hr Organic : 10 mtr/hr Odour : 10 mtr/hr Backwash : 5-6 mtr/hr Normal Bed depth is 900 mm The free chlorine at carbon outlet will be not detectable. The unit is designed to operate at inlet free chlorine level of maximum 2 ppm. MANUAL ACTIVATED CARBON FILTER (MILD STEEL) SL. SIZE IN PIPELINE MAX. 4 PRESSURE SAND FILTER These are most conventional filter are in extensive use. Media used is Filtering Sand, Silex and Graded Gravels; operating service velocity is 10 mtr/hour/mtr. These filters are designed for maximum inlet turbidity, suspended solid load upto 50 ppm, maintaining a filtered water quality < 5 ppm. Coagulants have to add in raw water prior to feeding to the filter. The filter can be backwashed with raw water for inlet suspended solids, turbidity < 25 NTU and use filtered water if turbidity loads > 50 NTU. 5 IRON REMOVAL FILTER Iron as Fe may be suspended from or dissolve form. Dissolve iron in water precipitates as Ferric hydroxide when the CO 2 from the raw water is released and water comes in contact with Oxygen from the air. Sometime iron may be associated with dead vegetable matter is known as them Iron. To facilitate iron removal normally following steps are taken 1. Aeration 2. ph Correction 3. Contact with Catalyst (MnO 2 ) 4. Filtration Normally iron is found in bore well which also have substantial quantity of dissolve CO 2 and have typically low ph. When the water is aerated by spraying or through aeration towers (Like degasser) the CO 2 from the water is released. This increases the ph and also saturates the water with oxygen which is necessary for oxidizing the iron from the soluble ferrous form to insoluble ferric forms. The ph of water is increased by dosing alkali like NaOH. Alkali helps in formation of Ferric Hydroxide which precipitates Ferric Sulphate and Ferric may also be used. 6 SIDE STREAM FILTER SALIENT FEATURE OF METCON S SIDE STREAM FILTER 1. Improves cooling efficiency 2. Enhances chemical treatment and reduces chemical costs 3. Extends tube life by removing corrosive depots 4. Minimizes micro-organisms growth 5. Reduces legionella risk 6. Reduces scale build-up and algae contamination 7. Minimizes corrosion of metal surfaces 8. Eliminates downtimes and mechanical/chemical cleaning of tubes 9. Reduces energy costs 10. Very short payback period! 11. Exceptionally efficient filtration with no clogging 12. Filtration upto 10 gpm/ sq.ft. 13. Filtration flow up to several thousand gpm 14. Low maintenance - fully automatic system ADVANTAGES OF METCON S SSF Filter size - Metcon have a wide range of Side Stream Filtration Unit from 2.7 m3/hr Flow to 240 m3/hr for various capacity of Cooling Circuit & Cooling tower. We also have efficient factory set up to provide custom make vessel beyond our normal range. Easy installation - Removing the fine suspended solids before they agglomerate and foul will not require the installation of sophisticated and costly piping in the tower sump, needed with traditional sand filters due to their larger micron extraction. The filter can be installed without waiting for a shutdown or without emptying the sump. Additional savings again. Low backwash requirement -- The 400 gpm filters will backwash at 50 gpm only. One vessel at a time will be backwashed for 4 to 8 minutes. Piping size, volume of water will mean savings at the installation and afterwards. Low flow rate for backwash makes it easy to use clean chlorinated water rather than tower water for extended life of the media and chemicals savings. Why should water from cooling/heating systems be treated with Side stream Filter? Recent studies carried out using laser particle counters have shown that 85-95% of the particles present in the recirculation water of either closed loops (evaporator circuit) or open loops (cooling tower circuit) are less than 5-micron in size. It is known that the water from the cooling tower absorbs most dirt and airborne contaminants surrounding the tower. Microorganisms and particles of that size produce fouling which can result in scale build-up and algae contamination. They also become food and support for bacteria. The chemical program enhances the need for finer filtration: iron precipitates when oxidized and creates a very fine crystal that is a fraction of a micron, and then becomes larger and larger. But the iron particle circulating through the heat exchanger is very fine and it needs to be that way otherwise fouling occurs very quickly. Dispersing agents are used to keep the solids fine enough and charged so their tendency to agglomerate and to get larger is then reduced artificially. Chemical treatment alone will not solve the problem. Particles must be removed in order to prevent corrosion, slime formation, and bacterial contamination. Ultra fine filtration, in conjunction with the chemical treatment program will improve the efficiency of heat exchangers, and reduce the regular cleaning of the cooling tower sump and pipes. The Side stream Filter system will eliminate most of the very fine suspended solids and airborne contaminants from the recirculation water. The Side stream Filter is suitable for both hot water heating and chilled water applications (cooling towers or closed loops).

11 SOFTENER The process of removal of hardness from water is called softening. Hard water contain dissolve salts pf Ca+, Mg+ in compound from of carbonate, chloride, Sulphate and nitrates, which cause scaling. The hardness associated with alkaline salt is known as carbonate or temporary hardness and which is associated with neutral salts is known as non carbonate or permanent hardness. Softener containing acidic resin in sodium form. When hard water passes through the bed of exchanger it absorbs Ca+, Mg+ ions and gives up sodium salt in exchange. S the sodium do not contribute to hardness the treated water is soft. When the cation exchange resin has exhausted its store of exchangeable sodium ions it became inactive and stops softening. It is then reactivated by replenishing the sodium ions by passing a solution of NaCl (10-15%) through the bed of exhausted exchanger where the cation resin absorbed sodium ions and gets reactivated once again generating soft water of commercial Zero Hardness. After the brine has been injected the excess salt and regeneration products are washed out of the resin bed by giving a slow rinse at the flow rate and then giving fast rinse at the flow rate equal to service floe rate. During Service cycle During Regeneration R Na + Ca + = R Ca + Na + R Na + NaCl = R Na + CaCl 2 R Na + Mg + = R Mg + Na + R Mg + NaCl = R Na + Mg Cl 2 Softener is usually two types: Up flow & Down Flow

12 UPFLOW SOFTENER These softeners are of packaged type and there are no free space provided. This makes this unit quite compact. The water enters the unit from the bottom and it taken up from the top. Collecting plate is provided in bottom as well as in the top. When the unit is exhausted the brine is injected from the top of the unit and the effluent is taken up from the bottom of the unit. Since the water flow at the upward direction during service cycle no backwash is require for this units. Maximum bed depth is 1000 mm, if the raw water has > 400 ppm total hardness, soft water should be used for injection of brine and rinsing of the unit. This will ensure the soft water produces consistent soft water. Select regeneration level of 130 kg/cm2 of resin for total hardness upto 250 ppm and kg/cm2 of resin for total hardness > 250 ppm It is important that the exhaustion time is not less than Five hours. 13 DOWNFLOW SOFTENER In case of Down Flow softeners, the water enters the unit from the top and taken out from the bottom. Collecting plate is only provided in the bottom and free space is provided on the top to prevent the resin to escaping during backwashing. The back washing is done to remove the accumulated turbidity in the bed to loosen the compacted resin bed to ensure good contact between salt solution and resin beads. After the backwashing the brine is injected. Down flow softeners are provided with 300 mm bed depth of under bed. The technical detail clearly specifies the minimum & maximum quantity of resin that can be accommodated in a unit. You have to choice of using a frontal pipe work and valves to suit your flow requirements. We can select the regeneration level between 130 kg/cm2 to 160kg/cm2 and decide on the unit dimension, quantity of resin that will be required to suit the net operating flow rate and OBR. While designing any of the softeners, we must ensure that BV/H (Bed Volume/hr) is always between 6 & 40. We may start the design by assuming a BV/H and regeneration level and arrive at the resin quantity. Once you arrive at the resin quantity cross check the BV/H is near about what you have assumed. If too much of variance is there, then redo the calculation of finding out the resin quantity till BV/H matches. For Greater then 1200 mm Dia softener we must include in our price of cost of fitting for salt saturator days or 4 days of brine. The average treated water at the outlet of the softener will have a hardness level of commercial Zero. If total Dissolve solids (TDS) in raw water exceed 1000 ppm, it is difficult to achieve total Hardness < 5 ppm. The raw water should be clear, free from turbidity, iron, organics, free chlorine, oil & grease. SL MANUAL DOWNFLOW SOFTENER (MILD STEEL) SIZE IN MM PIPELINE IN MM MAX.
