3 Introduction The test methods cover the measurement of apparent density, bulk factor, and where applicable, the pourability of plastic materials, such as moulding powders. The apparent density is the weight per unit volume of the material, including voids, inherent in the material as tested. The term bulk density is commonly used for materials such as moulding powders. The term bulk factor is the ratio of the volume of any given quantity of the loose plastic material to the volume of the same quantity of the material after moulding or forming. In some manufacturing processes this is sometimes called the compression ratio. The pourability of the material is the time taken for a standard quantity of the material to flow through a funnel of specified dimensions. Apparatus The apparatus consists of a measuring cup in the form of a cylindrical cup of specified dimensions, according to the test standards used, which gives a specified volume when measured to the top of the measuring cup. A funnel of specified dimensions is positioned at a set height above the measuring cup. The dimensions of the measuring cup and funnel are specified in the various test standards, such as BS 2781 Method 621A and ASTM D1895 Methods A, B & C For example, ASTM D1895 Method A stipulates the following. Measuring Cup Funnel 100 ± 0.5 cm 3, inside diameter 39.9 mm, inside height 79.8 mm 9.5 mm bottom opening diameter - the remaining dimensions are shown in the test standards The measuring cup is positioned 38 mm directly below the funnel. Bulk Density Actual Procedure Method A & B Close off the outlet diameter of the funnel and fill the funnel by pouring in a set volume of the material, for instance using an ASTM D1895 funnel which has a volume of 115 cm 3. Open the bottom of the funnel and let the material freely pour into the measuring cup. After the material has all passed through the funnel, immediately scrape off the excess on the top of the measuring cup with a straight edge. Do not shake the cup. Weigh the material in the cup and then calculate the weight in grams of 1 cm 3 of the material to obtain the apparent bulk density of the material. It is recommended that this procedure is repeated several times and an average value determined. 3
4 Actual Procedure Method C Loosely drop 60g of the material into the measuring cylinder, taking care not to lose any of the material and as uniformly as possible. Level the material in the measuring cylinder & measure the height in centimetres. Fill the Weight Plunger or second cylinder with lead shot to obtain a total weight of 2300g, (to include the plunger). Lower this weight gradually into the measuring cylinder until it is entirely supported by the material. Allow the weight to settle for 1 minute and take the reading from the scale to the nearest 0.1cm. This reading will give the height of the material in centimetres. Bulk Factor Determine the average density of the material after moulding or forming and then divide this value by the average bulk density to obtain the bulk factor. Pourability Take a sample of the material weighing 100 times its density (after moulding or forming) in grams. Work the sample on a flat piece of paper so that is totally free from packing or cracking. Pour into the funnel as previously mentioned with the outlet diameter closed off. Then with a suitable stopwatch or timer set ready, open the outlet diameter and time how long it takes for the material to pass through. Again, repeat the procedure several times to obtain an average result in seconds. 4
