Objectives The objectives of this lesson are to provide information for BSC employees on the Dow Corning range of Food Grade Lubricants so that they are better able to understand the applications of the products. On completion of this lesson, students will be able to advise customers on their requirements in relation to the products discussed herein. Methods Achievement of objectives is by presentation of notes in correspondence course style together with trainer s notes for internal employees in a lecture situation. Assessment A formal test is provided with this lesson.

2 BEARING GREASES FOOD GRADE A. MOLYKOTE LONGTERM W2 Description Molykote Longterm W2 is a white, food grade heavy duty bearing grease. It is mineral oil-based grease, with a Lithium soap thickener and white solid lubricants. Benefits Molykote Longterm W2 is a high performance, heavy-duty grease with good adhesion, extreme pressure capability and ageing resistance. Good resistance to water washout. It is non-toxic and meets AQIS type C (non-food contact) and US FDA Regulation No. 21 CFR It has good water resistance with a service temperature of 39ºC to 110ºC. Applications This is a high performance food grade grease and has a wide range of applications including all types of bearings, sliding components, threaded spindles, guides, shafts, splines etc. Molykote Longterm MOLYKOTE LONGTERM W2 (Food Grade Bearing Grease) Food grade grease; meets AQIS type C and US FDA Regulation No. 21 CFR Multi-purpose bearing grease. Colour: white Mineral oil base with Lithium soap thickener and white solid lubricants. Service temperature: -39 C to +110 C. Excellent Water washout 2.5% Good adhesion, extreme pressure capability, ageing resistant. DN Value - 350,000 Applications: Food/beverage processing plants. Textile/garment plants. Domestic/kitchen appliance manufacturers. W2 should be recommended for use in the food/beverage, and textile/garment industries, domestic/kitchen appliance manufacturers, paper processing equipment and any other types of clean equipment. How to use Molykote Longterm W2 can be applied like any conventional grease. The bearing case should be packed completely only if the bearing is running a very low speeds. 3 B. MOLYKOTE WHITE EP Description Molykote White EP is a white, food grade High performance bearing grease. It is a mineral oil base grease, with an Aluminium soap thickener and white solid lubricants. Benefits Molykote White EP is a high performance heavy-duty, high load grease with good adhesion, extreme pressure capability and ageing resistance. Good resistance to water washout. It is non-toxic and meets AQIS type A (incidental food contact) and US FDA Regulation No. 21 CFR It has good water resistance with a service temperature of 17º C to +149º C. DOW CORNING 111 COMPOUND (Silicone Valve O-Ring Compound) Description Dow Corning 111 Compound is a heavy duty grease-like silicone compound It contains an inert silica filler in combination with selected polydimethyl silicone fluids. It is food grade and complies with AQIS Approval type A (incidental food contact) & FDA Regulation No. 21 CFR with AS 4020 approval for use with water. Benefits Dow Corning 111 Compound has excellent resistance to water, oil and most chemicals, has low volatility which is tackier than most greases, therefore adheres better. It has excellent water wash-out resistance. It acts effectively as a seal in valve applications. The compound will not carbonize at high temperatures, has a very low vapour pressure and will neither melt nor harden on long exposure to elevated temperatures. It is unaffected by most vegetable and mineral oils, many organic compounds and 0xst common gases. However, it is not recommended for use with compressed Oxygen, Chlorine or high pressure air. It is used in many applications where a very tacky, heavy-consistency material is required. DOW CORNING 111 VALVE LUBRICANT (Silicone Valve O-Ring Compound) Tacky, heavy consistency. Good adhesion to metal and rubber. Service temperature range: -40 C to +200 C Colour: white/translucent Resistant to water, oil and some chemicals. Low volatility; will not harden on exposure to high temperatures. Food grade; meets AQIS type A & US FDA regulation 21 CRF , AS No swelling effect on rubber/plastic parts. Applications: Lubrication of plug valves, taps, valves. Sealing of pressure systems. Chemical/corrosion barrier coating. Lubrication of rubber/plastic parts. Applications Dow Corning 111 Compound lubricant is used to lubricate control valves, pressure plug valves, fire extinguisher valves, water softener valves, valves for sea water, molten sulphur, and other chemicals in processing plants. 111 Compound is used to lubricate o-rings and provide a sliding seal between rubber and metal in the presence of water. In soft-drink dispensing machines, o-rings are used to open and close ports through which syrup and soda water pass. 5 D. MOLYKOTE G4500 (Multi Purpose Synthetic Grease) Description Molykote G4500 grease is a white, Aluminium Complex soap thickened, Synthetic oil (polyalphaolefin) and is fortified with PTFE. Designed to operate in a wide range of temperatures and compatible with a broad variety of material types used in modern machinery production. Meets FDA Regulation CFR for incidental contact with food. Benefits This product provides reliable operation of machines and equipment in harsh conditions such as vibration, dust, high humidity and flowing water. Other benefits are longer component life, less maintenance and down-time, longer re-lubrication intervals and increased reliability. Features compatibility with many Elastomers and Plastics. Applications Key Features of Molykote G4500 include: Formulated to provide higher load carrying capacity, excellent resistance to water wash out, and outstanding anti-corrosion properties. When this grease is subject to load, a film of solid lubricant is formed on the sliding surfaces and this prevents metalto-metal contact reducing friction and wear. MOLYKOTE FS-3451 CHEMICAL RESISTANT GREASE (Fluoro Silicone Grease) Description Molykote FS-3451 Chemical Resistant Bearing Grease is a Fluorosilicone fluid-based and fluorocarbon thickened grease for bearings that are exposed to harsh chemical environments, high speeds, heavy loads or high temperatures. AQIS approved lubricant type C (non-food contact). Benefits This grease resists deterioration by chlorides (e.g. methyl chloride, solvents, toluene, perchlorethylene), fuels (e.g. kerosene), acids (e.g. hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, sulphuric), alkalis (e.g. sodium hydroxide), low pressure steam. Note that the strengths of these chemicals and solvents affect the grease performance. Applications Molykote FS-3451 is especially designed to operate under heavy loads, and at high speeds and extreme temperatures. It is ideally suited for anti-friction bearings, and specific applications include chemical mixers, pumps, fuel-handling equipment, paint mixers and paint mills, electric motors, and hot-air blowers.
