1 CITY OF REDLANDS WELDER DEFINITION Under general supervision, to perform a full range of welding and fabrication work; and to repair broken equipment, pipes, plates, and tools as necessary. SUPERVISION EXERCISED May exercise technical and functional supervision over assigned maintenance staff. EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Weld, fabricate, and assemble parts and equipment for City utility operations; weld, braze, cut, shape, and fasten metal parts; fabricate and weld pipes, plates, and broken equipment. Use oxygen and acetylene heating torch, drill presses, metal brakes, metal shears, lathes, grinders, and a large variety of other power and hand tools and measurement instruments. Repair pressure leaks, meter and vault lids, and other broken equipment. Determine extent of necessary repair; read blueprints to determine measurements for layouts. Perform equipment repair work in the field and in the shop. Assist other maintenance personnel in different areas of assignments including utility crews involved in service and construction. Maintain work, time, and material records; record and inventory supplies; order welding and metal supplies as necessary. Install new sewer pipe lines; repair broken sewer lines. Set up traffic control and secure traffic to protect workers during repairs. Rig pipe, pipe fittings, or plate safely for installation. Solder copper tubing and fitting. OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES 1

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in welding and fabrication work. Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in machinist work. Operating and repair characteristics of the entire range of City owned light and heavy equipment. Various metals and their characteristics and methods of cutting and shaping them. Safe work practices. Safe driving principles and practices. Skill to: Operate and maintain metal working and welding equipment. Operate a motor vehicle safely. Ability to: Perform skilled welding and fabricating work with accuracy, speed, and minimum supervision. Design metal work specifications. Read and interpret graphic representations of work to be done. Accurately determine pipe or equipment repair needs and estimate the materials needed and time of repairs. Maintain a variety of repair records. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Ability to: 2

3 Welder (Continued) Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing highly skilled welding and fabrication duties. Training: Equivalent to a high school diploma supplemented by completion of an apprenticeship in welding License or Certificate: Possession of a valid Class A driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain tig welding and mig welding certificates. Special Requirements: Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50 lbs.; exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, smoke fumes, vibration, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
