THEME 1.2 INTEGRATED SANITATION FOR ALL Key messages Focus on the access to sanitation, but also on the implementation and management of wastewater systems to ensure the collection, treatment and potential reuse with either centralized or decentralized systems Progressive and systematic implementation may be key Realistic legal frameworks & the selection of cost-effective technologies adapted to local context are needed Wastewater management is possible for megacities as for small towns Relevant awareness, understanding, knowledge and skills need to be developed along with roles & responsibilities, policies & regulations, rules & standards Faecal sludge management an integral part of the sanitation chain Thinking follows Post-2015 MDGs but the selection of indicators is needed for the proposed SDG target 6.3

7 th World Water Forum Session organized by JSC & Veolia Thematic Process T.2.3.5 RECYCLING AND REUSE - RESOURCE POSITIVE FOR CITIES

T.2.3.5 RECYCLING AND REUSE - RESOURCE POSITIVE FOR CITIES Key messages: 1. For the use of reclaimed wastewater as drinking water or for food production in agriculture and sludge compost as fertilizer, social acceptance is an issue. It is necessary to educate and raise awareness among decision-makers and users to make them understand that these resources are safe to use in order to develop the willingness to use them. 2. The situation in developing countries, in which sanitation coverage is still an issue, differs from that of developed countries. Innovations suited to local context are needed to speed up coverage and increase wastewater reuse/recycling in developing countries. 3. Water and sanitation need to be considered together. Sanitation must not only include toilets, wastewater/sludge collection and treatment, but also now energy recovery and reuse/recycling. Cross-sector collaboration and an integrated water/waste/energy approach are necessary.

The Japan Sanitation Consortium (JSC) was launched on 16 October 2009 JSC consists of 5 expert organizations specialized in the management of wastewater, sludge/septage in Japan (on-site and off-site sanitation) JSC aims to utilize Japan s expertise in sanitation as well as success stories and good practices from other countries to diffuse a wide range of solutions for the improvement of sanitation in the Asia-Pacific region JSC collaborates with international organizations, such as ADB, NGOs for sanitation improvement JSC MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS Off-site Sanitation - Sewerage Business Management Centre - Japan Sewage Works Association - Japan Sewage Works Agency On-site Sanitation - Japan Environmental Sanitation Center - Japan Education Center of Environmental Sanitation
