Remarkable Team Building (Part 1 of 4) e = mc 2 Your practice is simply the reflection of your energy your energy as a doctor your energy as a leader your Teams energy your Tribes energy. Your practice volume is a metric that measures your energy at any given point in time So are your collections your New Patients and your Retention all simply the manifestation of energy. Doctor, you are the CEO of your practice Chief Energy Officer. And if you want to do your job well and realize the true potential of all of the above you will learn to master this one vital equation: E = mc2 Energy = Money x Crucial Communications or more accurately: Energy and Enthusiasm = Money x Crucial Communications Welcome to the Remarkable Team Building Series. Because your Team is one of the most critical determinants of your practice success I have decided to do a series on creating Remarkable Teams. The investment that you make in developing your Team your people will rival any other investment that you could possibly make as a chiropractor. We will talk about finding and hiring the right team members; Team building; Training your Team as well as Team Meetings - in upcoming TRP Academy Modules but this episode is dedicated to arguably the most important aspect of building a truly remarkable Team Energy and Enthusiasm. There is a clear and definite linear relationship between your Team s energy and enthusiasm and your practice growth and success. So let s do a deep dive on this most import X Factor. Write this down in fact, write it on the wall of every room of your practice put it on a post it note on your mirror at home

the fridge the dashboard of your car E = mc2 Your Team s Energy and Enthusiasm = Money x Crucial Communications Let s address the first multiplier: M M stands for money. Money is good. We all love money. Money is energy. Money is fuel. Money allows you to make things happen. Lack of money is bad. Without money you feel weak disempowered And under-valued.this is true for me and its true for you It is also true for your team. Your Team has wants and needs too they want and need money to create the life that they want for them and their family as well. And we should provide the environment for them to reach their financial goals too we should encourage it. We should create a compensation structure for our team that motivates, incentivizes and rewards great people, great behaviors and great outcomes. I have included an outline of one compensation strategy that you may want to consider in the resources box below. We have used it for years and have enjoyed the benefits of having an On-Purpose and Motivated Team. That being said Money is a great motivator but energy and enthusiasm builds empires. So let s talk about building enthusiasm: Crucial Communications There are two basic categories of relationships that you will create with your team: 1. Transactional 2. Relational Transactional relationships leverage contracts, incentives, and money. These relationships can certainly produce results and success but are typically very expensive and limited in their sustainability.

It has been my observation that the greatest Teams in chiropractic are always Relational in nature These Teams are built on Vision, Purpose, Mission and Leadership and Crucial Communications. Remember Money is always a factor but Crucial Communications will determine how large your M will need to be in order to harness the energy that you will need to generate to build the practice of your dreams and really impact your town. In fact there is a level of energy that you will never reach without it the type of energy that once you ve tapped into it you will find a wellspring of enthusiasm that you could never pay for Discretionary Energy Discretionary Energy is its own gear it s the energy band that we find when we are doing something that we believe in something that we love to do something that we would do EVEN if we were NOT getting paid to do it This type of energy is rare and it is magic. It is also achievable if you are willing to commit to Crucial Conversations. There are many forms of Crucial Communications but I am going to cover 5 in this episode 1. Vision-casting 2. Expectations and Agreements 3. Training and Equipping 4. Celebration and Recognition 5. Guard Rails and Discipline

1. Vision-Casting Now, we did a deep dive of this topic in the Vision Casting Module as part of the Board Meeting Series be sure to review this module but in short: Your Team needs Vision they need you, the leader to cast that Vision. What are we trying to create? What does success look like? What dent are we going to make in the universe? You must cast the Vision Story for your Team. Purpose Why is that important? And Mission How are we going to serve our Purpose and Create our Vision? Vision-Casting is step one in creating the environment where Crucial Communications live Your Team must see the Vision and own the Vision or struggle to make the boss happy every day your choice. #2. Expectations and Agreements: All good long lasting relationships begin with 2 things in common: - Clear Expectations - Honest Agreements Make sure that you create the space and time to discuss and share clear and transparent expectations with your Team. The hiring process is the best time to do this but if you find yourself surrounded by a Team that has not had this Crucial Communication there s no time like the present Utilize your next Quarterly Review and take this opportunity to gain clarity in your expectations of them and their expectations of you, doc. Tell them what you want tell them what you expect them to do be clear and direct

be thorough and consistent and write it down. Your Team wants to do great work and will thrive if you show them exactly what that means. The big idea is to get everyone in the same boat and rowing in the same direction. I have created a Power Point deck that I use when hiring a new CA or Associate Doctor I highly recommend leveraging this strategy to keep the conversation on track And to make sure that you do not miss any important points. I have included an example of this type of deck in the resources box below. Use this as a guide to create your own. This is a great way to cover a lot of critical information in an organized and easy way. Just sit side by side with your new Team Member and walk thru the deck together. They will be impressed with your organization. 3. Training and Equipping I love Daniel Pink s book: Drive in this must read guide to Team Building Daniel explains that as human beings we simple have an innate want to do good work we want to be good at the things that we do. CA s and Associate Doctors are certainly no exception to this rule. There is no better investment that we can make as chiropractors than to invest in our own development and in the development of our Team Members. Your Team wants to be trained and they want you to train them. We have created a powerful and productive Training Culture in our practice. I love what my friend Dr. Bruce Wong says on this: We see patients between trainings! This is such a critical topic that I have decided to dedicate an entire module to Team Trainings watch for it in an upcoming TRP Academy Module. We will do a deep dive discussion of setting up your Training system, curriculum and schedule. We will also unpack the keys to a good and productive training session how to execute and lead your team through trainings and differentiate between Trainings and Meetings. Stand by

4. Celebration and Recognition: Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for a Vision-centered, On-Purpose chiropractor to forget that they need to stop and smell the roses. We can often get fixed on our BHAGs (big hairy audacious goals) And forget to celebrate the NHAGs (next happily achievable goals) Celebration is critical for you and your Team it energizes and rewards everyone involved it is an import part of any journey, initiative or process. Stop and celebrate. Now - If I am talking to you right now your homework tonight is to find any good reason to celebrate - and then go tell your team tomorrow! Recognition is its own force of nature. We all want and require - recognition it is an essential element. We want to feel noticed and appreciated especially by authority or superiors. It is said that people will bleed for a cause but they will die for recognition. When it comes to creating your own Remarkable Team - Recognition is the most important and most powerful of the Crucial Communications. It will access that extra gear that Discretionary Energy faster than anything else it is a powerful multiplier in the e = mc2 equation It is infinitely divisible and readily available. And it is free. Think about it the most powerful multiplier free. It will change the energy of your relationships your Team and your practice. Recognition is an X Factor that you should focus on and develop like a muscle until it becomes your natural response. Recognition could be the key to you creating your Remarkable Practice give it away freely. 5. Discipline: Your Team is like a family and you are the head of that family. Your practice is a tribe and every tribe has a leader.

A critical role of the leader is to set the rules that protect the Tribe and then enforce them. All healthy organizations and cultures operate within a set of rules and policies that create structure. If someone is acting outside of those rules, policies or structure it is the leaders job to call them on it. It is also the leader s job to discipline the offender if the behavior continues. Good leaders make rules great leaders know how to enforce them with grace and fairness. If you do not protect the integrity of your rules and policies you will lose the trust of your Team. Sometimes the loudest communication is silence. Do not ignore or avoid dealing with real team issues Deadly staff infections usually begin quietly and end in a hot mess. Step into your role as Team Leader and leverage this Crucial Communication when necessary. Chances are, when you do you ll see a surge of energy that will leave everyone asking What took you so long? E = mc 2 Should be considered your Remarkable Equation. It is simply the path to greater Energy and Enthusiasm and remember: Your practice is simply the reflection of your energy your energy as a doctor your energy as a leader your Teams energy your Tribes energy. Energy and Enthusiasm is the hallmark of a Remarkable Practice Go Create Yours Today!
