The GLOBALG.A.P Aquaculture Standard has been expanded in the new Version 4 to include any hatchery-based farmed species that can be produced under controlled aquatic systems, including the consideration of passive collection of seedlings in the planktonic phase. SFP tilapia aquaculture improvement programme. March 2011. Several eco-labeling schemes and standards are emerging for tilapia. The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership is comparing these schemes by running side-by-side audits on ten different tilapia farms for each scheme. SFP recently released a procurement guide for buyers and importers of Gulf of California shrimp. We created this guide for buyers who want to be assured that the product they are purchasing, either from industrial and/or artisanal vessels, is from a legal and environmentally sustainable fishery. FSA Scotland - Research commissioned - fish and shellfish safety. 16 March 2011. Five pieces of research will help gather evidence to improve the hygiene standards of fish and shellfish consumed in Scotland. The areas of research are to: review the processes in place throughout the processing chain that are designed to control the formation of histamine in at-risk fish species; investigate the prevalence of parasitic nematodes in commercially-farmed marine fish in Scotland and to review current farming practices; carry out a survey of biotoxins in Scottish whole king scallops to assess whether current controls are effective in protecting public health; develop specific methods to detect and monitor toxin-producing phytoplankton species and determine their seasonal abundance; and assess the impacts of heavy rainfall and other environmental impacts on E. coli levels in shellfish. http://www.thefishsite.com/fishnews/14430/research-needed-on-fish-and-shellfish-safety SFP urges retailers to fight 'trash fish' in feeds. 15 March 2011. SFP is recommending seafood retailers send a written request to their shrimp suppliers asking they identify the species of fish used in aquaculture feeds along with the locations of the fisheries that provided such fish. 3

The call for proposals goes out 1 April, projects are awarded in July. The competition has two interrelated core themes: Increasing domestic supply of sustainably produced vegetable protein for farmed animals (including land and marine based aquaculture); and increasing production efficiency and sustainability of domestically supplied animal and fish protein for food, and reducing waste in the food chain to the point of retail sale. New research by the Sintef and Aquaculture, Norsk institutt for Naturforskning (NINA) and the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) have studied saithe and cod that have taken to staying close for fish farms.
