The $4 price increase we saw on heifers last week was just taken back this week as heifers sold $4.27 lower. There were 1,967 head of finished steers and heifers sold live through Ontario auction markets. The average fed steer price was $74.70 and the average heifer price was $70.69. Some auction markets reported fed cattle sold on an even demand at steady prices while another reported cattle sold on a dull demand at lower prices. The cow trade in Ontario continued to sell on a good demand at steady prices. The volume of cows sold through Ontario auction markets was 1,730 with an average price of $19.98. Local auction markets reported cows sold on a good active trade with prices fully steady to $1-2 higher. The volume of replacement cattle sold was up 49.6% from last week with 3,060 head traded. Auction markets reported stockers sold moderately with good quality cattle selling steady and plainer types selling lower. It was also reported that shortkeep steers were barely steady while shortkeep heifers sold steady. Direct to packer railgrade cattle prices were steady with last week as steers sold $128.00-131.00 and heifers $127.00-129.00. In Alberta, trade was fairly active with steady prices. Steers sold from $69.25-71.50 live and $116.00-121.00 flat rail. Heifers sold from $69.25-72.00 live and $116.50-120.00 flat rail. U.S. cash cattle trade saw moderate trade in the north and active trade in the south. Prices in the north were $4 lower and prices in the south were $2-3 lower. Steers and heifers sold at $83 live and $131-132 dressed. Local beef trade experienced slower movement this week. Prices are mostly steady to slightly under pressure. Some orders have been cancelled due to changing features at the retail level. Page 7
