1. Patented modification process Wood temperature T( o C) ThermoWood process was developed and patented by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (www.vtt.fi) the patents are administrated by Licentia Oy (www.licentia.fi) 250 200 150 100 50 0 ThermoWood process Thermo-D Thermo-S Steam Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3 0 6 12 18 24 30 36 42 48 t(h) Time Valid patents: EP0695408 JP 3585492 US 5,678,324 CA 2,162,374 Austria Belgium Switzerland Germany Denmark Spain France UK Greece Ireland Italy Holland Portugal Sweden Japan USA Canada

Registration process unfinished in some countries 2. EU registered trademarks ThermoWood and ThermoHout ThermoWood EU registration: applied in 1998 registered in 2000 Members of the EU Registered also in: Switzerland Canada

3. Audited quality control Developed and implemented in cooperation with Inspecta Oy (www.inspecta.fi), which is international provider of inspection, testing, measurement and certification services ThermoWood quality control system Raw material Modification process Inspection of modified timber Instruction for packing and storing Traceability Report filing

Inspection mark of Inspecta Oy

Quality stamp of ThermoWood Association

Thermally Modified Timber

KOMO Product Certificate of SKH

4. Life cycle assessment (LCA) LCA study of ThermoWood was carried out by Imperial college London Conclusion: ThermoWood has a potential of being a green building material if consideration is made to the production as well as the use and disposal at the end of its life cycle using best available technologies

5. Certified raw material certified raw material key factor for the members of the FTWA in Finland > 90 % of raw material for thermal modification comes from PEFC certified forests the association has members also outside Finland where also other forest certification systems are used

6. Standardization ThermoWood classification Thermo-S ( Stability ) Thermo-D ( Durability, durability class 2) CEN/TS 15679 Thermal Modified Timber - definitions and characteristics approved in 2007 national implementation in 2008

CEN/TS 15679:2007: Thermally Modified Timber Definitions and characteristics Wood at which the composition of the cell wall material and its physical properties are modified by the exposure of temperature higher than 160 C and conditions of reduced oxygen availability. The wood is altered in such way that at least some of the wood properties are permanently affected through the cross section of the timber

CEN/TS 15679:2007: Thermally Modified Timber Definitions and characteristics The principal changes on thermal modification of timber compared with untreated wood are improved dimensional stability and increased resistance to decay by wood destroying fungi, and in some cases changed colours.

7. R&D Finnish ThermoWood Association annually allocates resources for topical R&D projects

ThermoWood Concept - summary: many kinds of functions are needed for succesful commercialization of new product all parts of ThermoWood Concept are essential the Concept ensures technical and ecological quality of products sold under the trademark ThermoWood ThermoWood is now accepted building material 90000 80000 70000 60000 THERMOWOOD PRODUCTION = production capacity 63919 56279 83791 72485 m 3 50000 40000 30000 20000 18799 24605 41607 39324 34968 31146 25797 21631 10000 0 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 Sold Modified
