Land Use Characteristics Cultivated organic soils important source of CO 2 emissions in the Netherlands About 290,000 ha (or 6% of the total land area) 223,000 ha under agricultural land use: permanent pastures for dairy farming improved drainage and bearing capacity of the pastures in large areas ditch water levels are lowered Forested area 397.320 ha (9.6% of total land area). Originally: wood production main purpose. Since 1970s: multi-purpose forests (e.g. nature, recreation), managed according to Sustainable Forest Management principles. 11
