Grajek, Forester Legal Description: T17N, R8W, Sec. 6 T17N, R9W, Sec. 1 T18N, R8W, Sec. 19 T18N, R9W, Sec. 24, 25 RMU (if applicable): #315, Timber Intensive Management Goals: The goal for this management unit is the production of high volume, quality timber as well as maintain the aspen cover type and age-class diversity.. Soil and Topography: Predominantly Chelsea, Rubicon and Montcalm Assoc. The terrain in the compartment is rolling.. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: There are privately owned parcels bordering on the southern part of this compartment, in Sections 1 and 6. In Sections 24 there are private parcels along the west side of the section. In Sect. 25 there is a private parcel(40a.) in the NW corner.and 25. Unique, Natural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): None Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): None noted. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None noted. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: There is an intermittent drainage running southerly through Setion 1 of T17N, R9W into the Muskegon River.A standard buffer of 50 feet either side, is requested. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This compartment is located in the Highplains Ecosystem, Cadillac Subsection, LTA 1121. Soils in this area are characterized by well-drained loamy sands The surrounding landscape is primarily forested with the exception of the areas surrounding the community of Evart to the southeast. Historically, this area was composed of mesic forest types. Presently, early serial stage northern and central hardwoods and mesic pine dominate the landscape. Regeneration of the oak component both within the aspen and northern hardwood types are a concern. Red maple and cherry generally regenerate in heavily thinned stands. Wildlife habitat objectives are to continue to manage for high structural diversity within stands and age class diversity across the compartment. Primary wildlife considerations are for ruffed grouse, deer, and turkey.(l. Smith 7/19/05) Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of an Q:\D Drive Moved\OIPC_Compartment_Review_onthe_Web\Cadillac\2007\Cmpt035\Comp035.doc of Michigan Last saved by State

The glacial drift thickness varies between 600 and 800 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Jurassic Red Beds and the Pennsylvanian Grand River and Saginaw Formations. The Saginaw is quarried for clay/shale in other parts of the State. The nearest gravel pit is just to the east and gravel potential is good. The compartment is located 1.5 miles east of Cedar Field. The field has produced over 1.2 million BO from the Devonian Detroit River Formation and over 1.4 Bcf gas from the Stray sandstone. None of the State land is currently leased for oil and gas development. Vehicle Access: Access within this compartment is limited by the lack of county roads which are only maintained during seasons with good weather. 7 Mile Rd. is on the south edge of the north part of the compartment. U.S. 10 borders the south part of the compartment. A forest road access plan is detailed on the compartment map. Identified are state and county roads as well as forest roads and trails under the jurisdiction of the DNR. Also indicated are forest roads and trails under the jurisdiction of the DNR that are proposed for abandonment. These roads were determined to be in excess of the access needs in the area, are a threat to the resources, or are a concern environmentally. Proposed new roads or roads recommended for substantial improvement are noted below: Survey Needs: None anticipated. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: The Evart Motorsports Trail is situated partially within the compartment. The compartment is used extensively by hunters. Dispersed camping does occur within the compartment. Fire Protection: The fuels in this area, are predominately aspen, oak. There are a few scattered pine plantations in the area. The road access in this area is very limited, which can cause problems for fire equipment. Additional Compartment Information: The following 5 reports from the Operations Inventory System (OIPC) are attached: Cover Type by Age Class Cover Type by Management Objective Compartment Volume Summary Proposed Treatments No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments With Limiting Factors The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand numbers, cover types Proposed treatments Proposed road access system Suggested potential old growth Q:\D Drive Moved\OIPC_Compartment_Review_onthe_Web\Cadillac\2007\Cmpt035\Comp035.doc of Michigan Last saved by State
