SECTOR - Livestock Australia is a big exporter of livestock and livestock products such as meat, wool and sheepskins. A variety of livestock is produced including cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry as well as deer, alpacas and native livestock - crocodiles and kangaroos. The livestock sector is going through an exciting phase with technological changes meeting demands around the world for product quality and safety. New ideas and products have greatly affected the day-to-day management of livestock. Satellite monitoring of cattle and water in the north of Australia, gene/embryo technology, and world competitive meat processing are just a few changes happening. There are many exciting careers if you enjoy working with animals to produce food and fibre to feed and clothe Australia and the world. JOB AREA - Beef Production If you enjoy working outdoors with large animals and machinery, then a career in the beef sector may interest you. Beef is one of Australia's largest rural exports reaching several billion dollars per year. Success in the sector requires a broad range of skills including the management of cattle, property, people and finances. Opportunities exist in gene technology, embryo transfer and artificial insemination as the sector aims to meet select export and domestic market standards. Many large cattle corporations operate throughout Australia, encouraging employees to move between locations. Opportunities exist for competent and skilled stationhands, stockmen and managers. JOB AREA - Meat Processing Everyone loves a BBQ, but have you ever wondered how meat gets from the farm to your supermarket fridge or butcher shop? It's through the work of meat processing. This surprisingly technologically advanced sector is vital to feeding Australia and many other parts of the world. Meat processing offers a wide range of job opportunities for people in places like abattoirs, boning rooms, smallgoods, food services and retail outlets as well as more technical areas such as meat safety and inspection, quality assurance, logistics management, effluent treatment and environmental control. Better still, while training you are fully paid and your skills are recognised throughout Australia. If managing people is your thing, there are also great careers in team leadership, human resource management, occupational health and safety, training and marketing.

JOB AREA - Pig Production The pig sector in Australia is an exciting and technologically advanced rural industry. New technologies and modern management practices have improved pig production and the sector is currently enjoying firm growth in export demand for its pork products, particularly to south east Asia. Pig production has become a specialised activity as market segments require exact carcass specifications. Production is increasingly being concentrated in the hands of specialist, large-scale producers capable of controlling genetics and formulation of feed to produce carcasses that the markets demand. The majority of Australia's pigs are housed indoors creating a comfortable and efficient environment for both the animals and the workforce. The industry requires competent and skilled piggery attendants to feed, water and care for pigs, supervisors to oversee the operations of the piggery, and managers to run business operations. JOB AREA - Sheep Production If you like working outdoors with animals then the sheep and wool sector could be for you. Australia has in excess of 110 million sheep or roughly 10% of the world sheep population and sheep and wool production has always been a major Australian rural industry. Australia is one of the world's premier producers of high quality clothing wool. Australia's sheepmeat sector has developed hand-in-hand with the success of the wool sector. But rather than being just a by-product of wool production, sheepmeat continues to make a valuable contribution to the economy in its own right. Australia and New Zealand dominate the world's lamb and mutton trade, and well over half the world's supply of merino wool is produced in Australia. Competent and skilled people are required in the sector including stationhands, farmhands, stockmen and managers. JOB AREA - Wool Harvesting If you'd like a challenging, physical and interesting lifestyle that can involve travel, this kind of work could be just for you. Wool harvesting involves the shearing of sheep and preparing wool for sale. You could be working in regional and remote areas of Australia and there are very good financial returns for top shearers. With around 5000 shearers and a similar number of wool handlers and crutchers needed each year, it is estimated that over 1000 new staff are required annually, as well as 300-400 new woolclassers to prepare the clip for sale. The main occupations in the wool harvesting sector are wool handler, shed hand (or roustabout), shearer and woolclasser.

JOB AREA - Horse Breeding If you like working with horses then the horse breeding sector may interest you. Horse breeding involves the care, mating, raising, marketing and management of very valuable bloodstock. The horse breeding industry is spread throughout Australia and creates many dollars and career opportunities in both rural and urban communities. The annual breeding cycle of the industry enables Australian workers to obtain exciting opportunities in the northern hemisphere during the Australian off-season. The skills and expertise of the Australian horse sector workforce are highly sought after overseas. The export of live horses is comparable in value with live cattle and sheep. Many go to New Zealand, Asia and South Africa. The sector requires competent and skilled workers, including stable hands, strappers and farriers to care for horses, supervisors to oversee stud operations, and managers to run business operations. JOB AREA - Poultry Production Poultry production is an innovative and high technology sector producing mainly chicken meat and eggs. The mix of privately owned and corporate businesses provides extensive career paths. Chicken meat production is a complex and technologically advanced system seeking continual improvement in genetic material and nutrition and husbandry techniques. Today's poultry are the product of complex, scientifically based programs aimed at producing more meat or eggs while consuming less feed. The sector needs competent and skilled people including poultry hands, hatchery attendants and chicken sexers. Supervisors and managers are required to run egg farms, hatcheries, broiler farms and "contract growing" establishments.
