In focus for this meeting I. Status on cyclone pyrolysis activities at SP ETC II. On-going activities in catalytic steam pyrolysis at KTH III. Co-gasification of black liquor and pyrolysis oil IV. Status for the SWEPOIL Initiative SWE Country Report IEA T34 May 2015 4

ETC Site Infrastructure: POC PDU POC = Pyrolysis Oil Cyclone For research and process development activities + production Solid biomass => Pyrolysis oil/char 0.2 MWth ~20 kg/h of bio-oil Nitrogen and product gas blown Daily operation Staged condensation train SWE Country Report IEA T34 May 2015 5

SP ETC Site Infrastructure: POC POC = Pyrolysis Oil Cyclone SWE Country Report IEA T34 May 2015 6

Recent/on-going POC activities Recently published paper (available on-line*) descibing the system and reference runs. First in a series of planned publications to come. Plugging in feeding system and higher char yields have been observed by SP ETC in their pyrolysis cyclone plant (20 kg/h) when it was fed with lignin (unpublished data). Round robin tests within IEA T34 in January 2015. *10.1021/acs.energyfuels.5b00174 SWE Country Report IEA T34 May 2015 7

I. On-going design work - Upgrade existing Catalytic Steam Pyrolysis reactor (~2 kg/h) and auxiliary systems. - Main aim is to significantly increase the yield of high quality deoxygenated bio oil (~10 %wt Oxygen) - Yield from 25 %wt (2014) up to 50 %wt (2016-) 2014 SWE Country Report IEA T34 May 2015 9

II. Dual stage pyrolysis CFD model development* *To be part in PhD thesis for defence during fall 2015. SWE Country Report IEA T34 May 2015 10

LTU Biosyngas Program Phase 2 WP2 Co-gasification of black liquor and pyrolysis oil Liquid fuel entrained flow gasifier (3 MWth) MeOH/DME synthesis demo plant (4 tonnes/24h)

WP2 purpose Co-gasification of black liquor and pyrolysis oil can lead to significantly reduced production costs for second generation biofuels, due to both economies of scale and increased efficiency. This project aims to verify the technology in pilot scale, to develop practical understanding of cogasification and to provide recommendations and process verification for commercialization of the technology.

WP2 status Blend tests and evaluations of black liquor/pyrolysis oil mixtures. Lab tests verification of reactivity with black liquor/pyrolysis oil blends. Pilot scale verification trails performed with Joensuu PO in Q1 2015. Reconstructions and planning of long test campaigns are currently on-going.

SWEPOIL Initiative SWEdish Pyrolysis OIL project portfolio - 2015 2018 Feedstock variety Applications POC Pyrolysis oil Swedish research and innovation initiative to facilitate progress and implementation of fast pyrolysis of biomass to replace fossil fuel alternatives. (In preparation of a R&I program proposal to Swedish Energy Agency 2015)

Status No major activities in 2015. Still, pending application for national funding of the project portfolio. Plan to gather national stakeholders for topic oriented workshop during the fall 2015. SWE Country Report IEA T34 May 2015 16

That s all for this meeting! Next time, planned updates on: I. Active projects and actors in SWEPOIL Initiative. II. PO fractionation and characterisation interest. SWE Country Report IEA T34 May 2015 17
