Crystal Falls Forest Management Unit Compartment Review Presentation Compartment #12 Entry Year: 2011 Compartment Acreage: 3032 County: Iron Revision Date: June 18, 2009 Stand Examiner: Scott Sebero Legal Description: T42N, R32W, Sections, 25 and 36 RMU (if applicable): Management Goals: Our management goals in this compartment are to develop age class distribution in the aspen type, maintain health of conifer types and increase acreage where possible and to develop the quality while maintaining diversity in hardwood types. The State of Michigan will work to develop buffers on streams, to increase public access and to maintain and improve the road system. Soil and Topography: Land is nearly level to hilly, excessively drained to well-drained, loamy and sandy soils on ground moraines, end moraines and outwash plains. Compartment is mostly uplands with small lowland swamps and drainages. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Ownership within this compartment consists of mostly State lands with a few private parcels. Lands within and around this compartment are used mainly for hunting and managed for forest products. Unique, Natural Features: Natural feature within this compartment would include the Paint River, Horse Race Rapids and Peavy Pond. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: None known. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None known. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Wildlife Habitat Considerations:

Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of coarsetextured till and glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between and feet. The Precambrian Michigamme Formation subcrops below the glacial drift. There is not a current economic use for these formations. Abandoned iron mines are located six miles to the northwest. Part of this Compartment was previously leased for metallic exploration and potential may still exist. A gravel pit is located just to the east and there should be potential on the uplands. There is no economic oil and gas production in the Upper Peninsula. Vehicle Access: Vehicle access is from the North off Lake Mary Road and the Diversion Canal Road. The bridge over the Diversion Canal has a 14-ton limit on it, which prevents logging trucks from crossing. Survey Needs: A survey has just been completed and should be all that is needed for proposed treatments this entry period. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: This area is used mainly for hunting. Fire Protection: Additional Compartment Information: The following 5 reports from the Operations Inventory System (OIPC) are attached: Cover Type by Age Class Cover Type by Management Objective Compartment Volume Summary Proposed Treatments No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments With Limiting Factors The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand numbers, cover types Proposed treatments Proposed road access system Suggested potential old growth

Report Date: 0/28/2009 Type Crystal Falls Mgt. Unit Compartment: 12 DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS Page 1 of 1 * This is a list of Dedicated Biodiversity Areas for this compartment along with a 1/4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to Dedicated Conservation Area Map for areas that the below listed Conservation Areas are located. Conservation Area Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA SCA SCA Archaeological Site Cold Water Stream Potential Old Growth Areas An aquatic or terrestrial area of the State that contains physical remains of human occupation. These are sites of cultural and historical significance that may occur upon terrestrial areas and Great Lakes bottomlands. They include thousands of Native American settlements and burial sites, as well as French and British outposts, nineteenth century logging camps, mines and homesteads. Beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, there are shipwrecks and other remains documenting the maritime trade. Such sites may be identified by Natural heritage data from the State Historic Preservation Office. Proposed treatments in this compartment will be implemented in such a manner as to maintain the integrity of these sites. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, no further detail about location is available. A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210. This category contains stands were identified for a broad range of reasons and were coded in the OI database as stand condition 8 as potential old growth (POG). Approximately 310,000 acres have been identified through the Operations Inventory (OI)/Compartment Review process. For stands in Year of Entry 2008 and forward, potential old growth is managed for the identified objective until it is: 1) vetted through the Biodiversity Conservation Planning Process (BCPP) and given a specific designation and objective (as an ERA, HCVA, or other type of SCA) and is released from the potential old growth designation; or 2) it is released from the potential old growth designation via the Compartment Review process.
