European Biogas Association Functions and operation of a national biomethane registry

BIOmethane as SUstainable Renewable Fuel Horizon 2020 project initiated by EBA 7 countries: AT, BE, DE, FR, HU, IT, UK 3 years: 2015 2017 To address all important issues related to developing the European biomethane industry and market www.biosurf.eu

Biogas upgrading

Biomethane production pathways 1) Anaerobic digestion followed by biogas upgrading 2) Gasification of renewable organic matter followed by syngas conversion to biomethane 3) Other technologies producing methane fuel from biogenic carbon or utilizing biological pathways (Power-to-Gas)

Biomethane production pathways Pathway Biogas upgrading Gasification Power-to-Gas Input material wet biomass solid biomass electricity + CO 2 Status available in development pilot scale TRL 8-9 5-8 5-7 Scale small medium - large small - large Main challenge efficiency innovation value of electricity

Benefits of biomethane a) Multiply application electricity generation heating & cooling vehicle fuel for transportation b) Use of natural gas systems distribution storage c) New commercial dimensions national vs. local d) Export possibilities

From EBA s Statistical Report

Challenge for biomethane trade Value of biomethane: physical (in use) value + intrinsic ( bio ) value Physical value: corresponds to prevailing market value of natural gas Intrinsic value: green, bio, renewable, sustainable The intrinsic value can be only partially quantified The intrinsic value must be realised on the market in addition to the physical value Biomethane injected into the natural gas pipeline cannot be physically tracked any more

National biomethane registries Are needed in every European country Independent, neutral, professional organisations Established through government actions or voluntary cooperation of market players (preferably with government mandate) Track, confirm and document the biomethane transactions along the contractual chain Administrative support in meeting regulative requirements Independent audit controls Assisting development of production and trade through building market confidence

Biomethane in transportation Natural gas (NG) and biomethane are complementary to each other, Bio-CNG and Bio-LNG are blends of NG and bioch 4 to be marketed jointly by NG and biogas industries, The biomethane component improves the GHG emission reduction potential of CNG/LNG, HDV s, city buses, municipality vehicles, ships, etc.

Biomethane Sustainability Characteristics 1. A greenhouse gas emission figure (from raw material supplies through anaerobic digestion and upgrading until injection); 2. Confirmation that GHG emission figure was calculated in accordance with the rules contained in Annex V of the RED; 3. Confirmation that the raw materials used for biogas production do not come from high biodiversity value areas, from the conversion of highcarbon stock areas, or from undrained peatland, respectively; 4. Confirmation that the agricultural raw materials used for biogas production are obtained in accordance with the relevant agricultural regulations of the EU; 5. List of substrates processed in the biogas plant.

Virtual National Biomethane Grid BioCH 4 value = physical value + intrinsic value BioCH 4 grid = NG grid + mass balancing National natural gas grid to bring the physical value to the market + Administrative system - the registry serves for transferring the intrinsic value from the producer to the enduser (applying the mass balancing method)
