1. INTRODUCTION At the request of Armacell GmbH based at Münster (Germany) sound insulation measurements (insertion loss, sound power insulation) have been carried out on Arma-Chek Sound pipe insulation, manufacturer Armacell in the Laboratory for Acoustics of Peutz bv, at Mook, The Netherlands (see figure 1). A 1631-11E-RA 3

2. NORMS AND GUIDELINES The measurements have been carried out according to the Quality Manual of the Laboratory for Acoustics and to: ISO 15665:2003 Acoustics - Acoustic insulation for pipes, valves and flanges which norm refers to: ISO 3741:1999 NOTE: Acoustics - Determination of sound power levels of noise sources using sound pressure - Precision methods for reverberation rooms this international standard has been accepted within all EUcountries as European Norm EN ISO 3741:1999 A 1631-11E-RA 4

3. TESTED CONSTRUCTION The description of the various pipe insulation constructions is taken from the data supplied by the principal. The masses have been checked by the staff of the laboratory. Several types of materials are combined in the variants tested. These materials are: AF/Armaflex (called AF32 in this report) 32 mm thick, density 50 kg/m 3 (weighted) AluminiumZink (called AZ in this report) 1 mm thick, mass 7,7 kg/m 2 (weighted) Terodemfoil (called TM in this report) 2,3 mm thick, mass 4,8 kg/m 2 (weighted) ArmaSound240 (called AS240 in this report) 20 mm thick, density 255 kg/m 3 (weighted) The different materials are mentioned in the same order as they have been applied to the test pipe. The materials have been put with no tension around the pipe and around each other. The joints between the AFS and CO have been glued together with no overlap, using Armaflex adhesive type 520. The TM was sticked on the AZ. The AZ has been put around the pipe with a small overlap. The next cladding was tested : total thickness ca. 108 mm; total mass ca. 21 kg/m 2 2X AF32 1X AS240 1x airgap 20 mm 1x TM 1x AZ The results as presented here relate only to the tested items and laboratory conditions as described in this report. The laboratory can make no judgement about the representativity of the tested samples. A 1631-11E-RA 5

4. MEASUREMENTS 4.1. Method The tests were conducted in accordance with the provisions of the test method ISO 15665 in the Laboratory for Acoustics of Peutz bv in Mook. A detailed description of the test set up has been given in the figure 2 of this report. A steel pipe (323 mm outer diameter; wall thickness 6.3 mm) is installed crossing the reverberation room, both ends of the pipe penetrating through the walls of the room. The penetrations have been sealed adequately. Noise is introduced in this pipe using a loudspeaker mounted in one end. The opposite end of the pipe is terminated by means of a closed anechoic termination. A microphone on a rotating boom is used in the reverberation room in order to measure the noise radiated from the pipe before and after insulation is applied to the pipe. A microphone is mounted inside the pipe in order to control the consistency of the noise source before and after insulation is applied to the pipe. The reverberation time of the room is also determined before and after insulation is applied to the pipe. From each set of measurements (sound pressure level and reverberation time) the sound power level L W radiated into the reverberation room is calculated according to ISO 3741 1. The reverberation room of Peutz has been accredited for this kind of measurements. The insertion loss D W caused by the cladding is now calculated as D W = L W,b - L W,c where: L W,b = the sound power level with the bare pipe L W,c = the sound power level with the cladded pipe 1 For this type of measurements the Laboratory for Acoustics has been accredited by the Dutch Council for Accreditation (RvA) as a test laboratory, registration number L334. A 1631-11E-RA 6

4.2. Accuracy This norm relates to ISO 3741 and in there the next estimations regarding accuracy are mentioned: (reproduction of the table 1 of the ISO 3741) Table 1: Estimated upper values of the standard deviations of reproducibility 2 of sound power levels determined in accordance ISO 3741:1999 Band width midband frequencies [Hz] upper values of standard deviation of reproducibility [db] 1/3 octave 100 a to 160 3.0 200 to 315 2.0 400 to 5000 1.5 6300 to 10000 3.0 1/1 octave 125 a 2.5 250 1.5 500 to 4000 1.0 8000 2.0 A-weighted per Annex E 0.5 b a Recommendations for frequencies below 100 Hz: are given in Annex C b Applicable to a source which emits noise with a relatively flat spectrum in the frequency range 100 Hz to 10000 Hz 4.3. Restrictions due to the measurement set-up In the set-up as used the maximum measurable insertion loss is determined by the difference between (1): the sound pressure level in the reverberation room of the bare pipe and (2): the back-ground sound pressure level. This difference is determined and shown as the maximum measurable insertion loss in table 2 below. Table 2: Maximum measurable insertion loss limited by the measurement set-up used octave band centre frequency, Hz 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000 8000 D w 23 35 49 64 66 54 53 2 Reproducibility R: when two tests are performed on identical test materials - in different laboratories - by different person(s) - under different environmental conditions - the probability will be 95% that the difference between the two test results will be less than or equal to R A 1631-11E-RA 7

4.4. Classification according to table 1 of ISO 15665 In ISO 15665 a classification system is given in order to give a simple way to classify the material under test. It has to be mentioned that before comparison the octave-band insertion loss values have to be rounded to the nearest 0.5 db The table 1 of ISO 15665 is reproduced here partly, it is simplified for the nominal diameter of the used pipe (310.4 mm inner diameter, 323 mm outer diameter): Table 3: minimum insertion loss required for each class for a pipe diameter 300 D 650 mm octave band centre frequency, Hz 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000 8000 Class minimum insertion loss A2-4 -4 2 9 16 22 29 B2-9 -3 6 15 24 33 42 C2-7 4 14 24 34 38 42 4.5. Environmental conditions during the tests Table 4: Environmental conditions during test barometric pressure [kpa] temperature [ C] relative humidity [%] 103,2 17,6 65 4.6. Results The results of the measurements are given in the table 5 and in figure 4. Measurements and calculations are made in 1/3 octave bands form 50 to 10 000 Hz. From the final results the octave-band insertion loss has been calculated from 125 to 8000 Hz. From the rounded octave-band values the Class has been determined and stated. A 1631-11E-RA 8
