Because they take so long to form, nonrenewable resources are considered to be irreplaceable. Once we use them up, they are essentially gone!

Slide 60 / 144 Geological Processes Many of the nonrenewable natural resources that we use were formed millions of years ago due to geological processes, or changes to the materials that make up Earth. It took millions of years for this iron deposit to form. If we extract it faster than it can be replaced, there will be no more iron here.

There is no guarantee that there will be enough natural resources to sustain life on Earth in the future! We need to make a shift from non-sustainable activities and technologies to those that will do less harm to our Earth.
