Example of using detailed statistics: The case of poplar markets in EU Arvydas Lebedys FAO Forestry Officer (Statistics) Eurostat Forestry Statistics Working Group Meeting, Luxembourg, 16-17 November 2011 Introduction FAO Forestry Department unit hosting International Poplar Commission (IPC) approached FAO Forest Products Statistics Group to give a presentation about poplar markets in 2010. Two presentations were prepared. IPC (www.fao.org/forestry/ipc) is one of FAO technical statutory bodies on forestry, aims to promote the cultivation, conservation and utilization of poplars and willows. Established in 1947, the IPC comprises 37 member countries. It has had an important role in the development of national forest sectors, largely through the transfer of knowledge and breeding material. The IPC is the only forum that brings together managers, users and researchers of poplars and willows to discuss topics of common interest in a cross-disciplinary way. The IPC carries out its mandate by supporting research and management activities through six working parties: (1) harvesting and utilization; (2) diseases; (3) insect pests; (4) genetics, conservation and improvement; (5) production systems and (6) environmental applications.

Trade flow of poplar logs & sawnwood in Central-West-South Europe Trends in poplar log prices in Europe

Summary This was just an example how it is possible to derive trends and conclusions about forest products by pulling together various international and national sources. This presentation would not be possible without having detailed 8-digit CM statistics in Comext. Perhaps Eurostat receive undeserved criticisms about their data quality, it provides a great amount of detailed raw data that can be tailored to user needs Future work and proposals FAO: International Poplar Commission meeting in India in 2012 (including poplar data collection before it) Workshop on JFSQ in China in late 2012 (target to realign officially reported roundwood removals statistics) Eurostat (proposals): Carrying out user survey would be useful to know who, how often, what for use your forestry statistics (e.g. FAO did in 1996, in 2005 and will repeat 2015) Consider changing Poplar to Aspen and poplar in the text of the following CN codes: 44039910 & 44079991
