Introduction This publication presents statistics of the value of non-oil foreign merchandise trade which entered or exited the territory of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi through the ports of Abu Dhabi (comprising air, sea and road ports) in the fourth quarter 2014. It should be noted that foreign trade data presented in this publication do not cover non-oil exports and imports through ports of the other Emirates in the UAE. These data have been sourced from the Abu Dhabi Department of Finance Customs Administration, and the scope of these statistics therefore is restricted to the trade flows recorded at ports under the jurisdiction of the Customs Administration. The publication highlights the relative importance of each individual component of these flows of non-oil exports, imports and re-exports. These data are presented according to the international standards for the dissemination of foreign merchandise trade statistics. Non-oil exports, imports and re-exports are shown by the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC), Revision 4, and the Broad Economic Category (BEC). In addition, the statistics are presented by continents and countries. Statistics presented on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS) are available from SCAD on request. The explanatory notes section at the end of this publication defines the key terms and technical concepts used in the compilation of non-oil foreign merchandise trade statistics. Readers are encouraged to refer to that section while reading the statistics and information outlined in the publication. 4
Key Points Non-oil foreign merchandise trade in the fourth quarter of 2014 The total value of non-oil foreign merchandise trade was AED 39.4 billion in Q4 2014, an increase of AED 5.4 billion (15.8%) compared with Q4 2013. Imports increased by AED 1.6 billion (5.9%), non-oil exports by AED 524 million (12.6%) and re-exports by AED 3.3 billion (91.6%) during this period. Imports contributed 70.6% of total foreign trade during the fourth quarter of 2014, while non-oil exports and reexports contributed 11.9% and 17.5% respectively. Its value increased by AED 555 million (4.5%) in Q4 2014 compared with Q4 2013. The main contributors to this increase were the sub-sections General industrial machinery and equipment (up AED 506 million) and Telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment (up AED 238 million), and was partially offset by a decrease of AED 522 million in Machinery specialized for particular industries. The second largest SITC4 section in Q4 2014 was Manufactured goods classified by material, representing 21.5% of the total. Its value increased by AED 203 million (3.5%) compared with Q4 2013. The largest subsections in Q4 2014 were Manufactures of metals, n.e.s. (up AED 731 million). The third largest SITC4 section was Chemicals and related products representing 9.6% of the total. Its value increased by AED 139 million (5.5%) over the period, mainly due to increases in Inorganic chemicals (up AED 180 million) (64.8%), and partially offset by a decrease of AED 79 million or -16.0% in Medicinal and pharmaceutical products. These top three sections contributed 77.9% of the total value of imports in Q4 2014, compared with 79.1% in Q4 2013. 5

Its value increased by AED 634 million (6.2%) in Q4 2014 compared with Q4 2013. The second largest BEC category, Transport equipment and parts, increased by AED 44 million (0.6%) compared with the Q4 2013 value, while the third largest BEC category, Capital goods (except transport equipment), showed an increase of AED 626 million (11.9%) over the period. These top three sections contributed 87.0% of the total value of imports in Q4 2014, compared with 87.2% in Q4 2013. Imports by Harmonized System (HS Chapter) The 5.9% rise in the value of imports over the period was mainly due to an increase of AED 635 million (83.8%) in Inorganic chemicals; compounds of precious metals, AED 451 million (26.5%) in Electrical machinery, sound recorders and parts and AED 162 million (21.2%) in Iron and steel. Imports by country The top ten countries contributed 64.9% of total imports in Q4 2014. The United States of America was the leading destination with AED 3.7 billion, an increase of AED 149 million (4.2%) compared with Q4 2013. There were increases in imports from South Korea (up AED 709 million), Italy (up AED 209 million), Japan (up AED 105 million); and partially offset by decreases of AED 200 million from France over the period. Non-oil exports by Standard International Trade Classification (SITC4) The value of non-oil exports during the fourth quarter 2014 increased by AED 524 million (12.6%) compared with the previous year. The largest SITC4 section was Manufactured goods classified by material, which increased by AED 118 million (5.2%) compared with Q4 2013. This increase was due to the sub-section Non-ferrous metals (up AED 140 million) or 12.4%, partially offset by a decrease of AED 16 million in Manufactures of metals, n.e.s.. The second largest SITC4 category, Chemicals and related products, showed an increase of AED 59 million (4.2%) over the period. This increase was due to the sub-section Plastics in primary forms (up AED 47 million) or 3.6%. The third largest SITC4 section was Machinery and transport equipment, which increased by AED 132 million or 54.4% during the period. These top three sections contributed 90.8% of the total value of non-oil exports in Q4 2014 compared with 94.9% in Q4 2013. The second largest BEC category, Capital goods (except transport equipment), decreased by AED 2 million (-0.5%), while the third largest BEC category, Consumer goods n.e.s., showed an increase of AED 125 million (124.0%) over the period. The top three categories contributed 95.0% of the total value of non-oil exports in Q4 2014, compared with 95.9% in Q4 2013. 9

Non-oil exports by continent Asia was the leading destination (78.7%) for Abu Dhabi non-oil exports during Q4 2014. The next largest continents were Europe and Africa, contributing 11.2% and 8.0% respectively to the total value of non-oil exports in Q4 2014. Saudi Arabia was the leading destination with AED 1.1 billion, a decrease of AED 374 million (-25.7%) compared with Q4 2013. There were increases in non-oil exports to Netherlands (up 207 million), India (up 172 million) and Japan (up AED 152 million) over the period. Re-exports by Standard International Trade Classification (SITC4) Miscellaneous manufacturing articles was the largest contributor to the total value of re-exports during Q4 2014 representing 47.8% of the total value, with an increase of AED 2.7 billion (446.9%) compared with Q4 2013. The main contributor was the sub-section Miscellaneous manufactured articles, n.e.s., which increased by AED 2.6 billion. Machinery and transport equipment was the second largest SITC4 section, and it increased by AED 83 million (3.2%) compared with Q4 2013. There was an increase of AED 322 million in the sub-section Transport equipment (excl. road vehicles) and AED 160 million in General industrial machinery and equipment, which was partially offset by a decrease of AED 172 million in the sub-section Power generating machinery and equipment, and AED 160 million in Office machines and automatic data processing machines. The third largest section Manufactured goods classified by material increased by AED 259 million (190.9%) over the period. There was an increase of AED 125 million in the sub-section Rubber manufactures, nes, and AED 60 million in Non-ferrous metals. The top three sections contributed 92.3% of total re-exports in Q4 2014, compared with 92.5% in Q4 2013. The second largest category was Capital goods (except transport equipment), which contributed 20.3% of reexports in Q4 2014, a decrease in value of AED 37 million (-2.6%), compared with Q4 2013. The third largest category Transport equipment and parts increased by AED 256 million (24.3%) over the period. Re-exports by continent The continent of Asia was the top destination for Abu Dhabi s re-exports in Q4 2014, representing 84.0% of the total re-exports. The next largest continent was Europe, contributing 8.9% to the total value of re-exports in Q4 2014. The most significant destination for reexports was Saudi Arabia (26.1% of the total) followed by Turkey (14.3%), Kingdom of Bahrain (9.8%) and Qatar (8.0%). Explanatory Notes Glossary This report contains certain terms specific to foreign merchandise trade and necessary when analyzing the trade statistics of Abu Dhabi Emirate. They include the following terms: Merchandise trade Merchandise Trade statistics record goods which add to or subtract from the stock of material resources of Abu Dhabi by entering or leaving its territory. Throughout this report, the term merchandise trade statistics refers to trade which moves through the ports of Abu Dhabi only, and do not capture interemirate trade activity. Imports Imports are goods that enter Abu Dhabi s customs and economic district from various parts of the world, excluding other emirates in the United Arab Emirates, and receive customs clearance. Goods are considered imports regardless of whether they enter the Emirate directly or are retrieved from customs warehouses, temporary entry areas or free zon.e.s. inside the country. These goods receive customs clearance in order to become part of Abu Dhabi s merchandise balance. Re-exports Re-exports represent goods that are imported from abroad, enter Abu Dhabi s customs and economic district and become part of the Emirate s merchandise balance. These goods are then re-exported as they are, without any modification, outside the country. Non-oil exports Non-oil exports include goods that are entirely produced locally or in whose production process local resources are used. Non-oil exports through the ports of Abu Dhabi may include goods that were produced in other Emirates in the United Arab Emirates. Oil is excluded from these goods. These goods leave Abu Dhabi s customs and economic district to the outside world, reducing the Emirate s non-oil merchandise trade deficit. Total non-oil exports Total Non-oil Exports represent the combined value of non-oil exports and re-exports. Balance of trade The balance of trade for this report is the difference between the value of total non-oil exports and imports, as defined above. Classifications The non-oil foreign merchandise trade statistics are presented in accordance with the two main internationally recommended output classifications: Standard International Trade Classification, Revision 4 (SITC4) and Broad Economic Categories (BEC). If users require statistics by the detailed Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS), these are available from SCAD on request. 27
Data source Data are obtained from Department of Finance Customs Administration. The data are processed and passed to Statistic Centre Abu Dhabi for further editing, compilation and are reclassified according to statistical classifications for foreign trade. Valuation In line with the World Customs Organization (WCO) agreement on valuation: Exports (including re-exports) are valued free on board (fob), which represents the value at the export border, and includes inland freight costs and packaging Imports are valued on the cost insurance and freight (cif) basis, which represents the value at the import border, and includes the additional cost of freight and insurance in transporting the goods internationally Notes on tables Changes (levels and per cent) in all tables are based on unrounded numbers. Relative importance is calculated as the ratio between the value of the sub-group and the total value for all groups, expressed as a percentage. Totals in some tables may not add up due to rounding.
