GAYLORD FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT: 4 ENTRY YEAR: 2007 Compartment Acreage: 1,348 County: OTSEGO Revision Date: April 26, 2005 Stand Examiner: Ric Barta Legal Description: T29N R1W, Sections 16-18 Management Goals: To provide for the protection, integrated management, and responsible use of a healthy, productive, and undiminished forest resource base for the social, recreational, environmental, and economic benefit of the State of Michigan. Soil and Topography: Major soils are 80% Roselawn Sand, drainage extremely rapid and very droughty; 15% Roselawn-Rubicon Sand, drainage extremely rapid with pitted outwash plains and subdued moraines; 5% Rifle Peat-Carbondale Muck, water table at or near surface. Terrain is level to gently rolling. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: State ownership is fairly contiguous. About 5% of the compartment acreage is out of timber production because of Antrim gas development. In addition, the accompanying roads and pipelines, in conjunction with the Consumers Power right-of-way, have resulted in a highly fragmented ecosystem. Unique, Natural Features: compartment. A variety of rare species have been documented in and around this Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: Old railroad grades from the logging era can be found in all three sections. Special Management Designations or Considerations: Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Crapo Creek, a small tributary to the Au Sable, has its headwaters in the compartment.

Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. Glacial drift thickness varies between and 1,000 feet. The Mississippian Coldwater Shale subcrops below the glacial drift. The Coldwater does not have an economic use. The nearest gravel pit is located two miles to the north and potential appears to be limited. The compartment appears to be completely developed for Antrim Shale gas production and is located south of the Niagaran reef trend. Vehicle Access: Given the thorough gas development, sled trail and power line, vehicle access in this compartment is virtually unlimited. Survey Needs: Prescriptions for this compartment will include significant private line. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Both the North Branch snowmobile trail and an ORV trail pass through the compartment from east to west. Fire Protection: Additional Compartment Information: The following 5 reports from the Operations Inventory System (OIPC) are attached: Cover Type by Age Class Cover Type by Management Objective Compartment Volume Summary Proposed Treatments No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments With Limiting Factors The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand numbers, cover types Proposed treatments Proposed road access system Suggested potential old growth

Stand GAYLORD FOREST MGT UNIT Proposed Treatments Compartment: 4 With NO Limiting Factors Cover Type Acres Age Site Index Mgt Obj Condition Method Cut Harvest Priority Cultural Need Entry Year: 2007 FDF Status 2 39 50 51 jack pine mature final harvest 1 planting 2004: Jack pine is ubiquitous, with red pine nearly so. Red pine is nicer and larger than jack but immature so save it while cutting out the jack pine and scattered aspen. Oak of size is seldom seen so save it for mast and try to protect the oak regen as well. Also protect the tiny wet spot in the north end, though they can cut up to it with no erosion worry. We are trying for a mixed stand so let the aspen clones regenerate and plant around them. Sled trail and motocross trail run through it. 4 58 68 55 red pine mature final harvest 1 planting 2004: The bigger jack pines are fallling out. Some aspen in the north end. Save some mast trees. Protect red pine and oak regen. White oak regen is significant in places. Sled trail runs through. 12 5 68 50 aspen (upland) mature final harvest 3 2005: This was probably a visual buffer for a previous cut. Some 10 and 12 inch trees. Starting to fall out. Some limbiness. Protect red pine. Though the jack pine is nicer, this stand would easily convert to aspen. If we plant jack pine after the cut, aspen will probably be a strong competitor. Sled trail runs along the north edge. 23 A9 22 84 58 aspen (upland) mature final harvest 1 2005: Leave red and white pine and protect white pine regen as much as possible. Mark to leave some large oak along road as a visual buffer and elsewhere for mast and to nurse white pine regen. 32 21 50 40 red pine immature selection 3 Previous comment: OFF SITE RED PINE PLANTATIONALSO PATCHY AND SHORT. thinning in places though overall BA doesn't call for it. Mark to thin and sell with Stand 36. 33 A6 9 68 48 aspen (upland) mature final harvest 1 2005: Motocross trail runs through. Needs 2005: Rec trails run through. Stocking is erratic. Large aspen are of dubious quality. Save red pine and mark a few large mast oak to leave. 36 29 55 46 red pine immature selection 2 2005: Rec trails run through. Patchy stocking. Needs to be marked to thin where BA warrants and remove the jack pine. 38 66 53 44 jack pine mature final harvest 1 planting Previous comment: BECAUSE OF HEAVY CUTTING OF AREA IN PAST-DO NOT CUT AT THIS TIME 2005: Looks unevenaged. Patchy stocking. Variable dbh with some Jack pine regen. Occasional 10 and 12 inch dbh trees. Protect red pine and oak. Cut and replant. Sled and motocross trails run through. 42 16 50 50 red pine immature selection 1 2005: Cut out the jack pine and lightly mark the red pine. Protect oak and the few relic red pine. 43 16 50 40 red pine immature selection 1 2005: Jack pine is suppressing the red pine in a lot of places. Harvest all jack and mark red pine minimally, just to allow the loggers through where the red is thick enough to warrant it. 44 31 56 38 jack pine mature final harvest 1 2005: Patchy stocking. Manage with Stand 79. 79 8 56 38 jack pine mature final harvest 1 2005: Patchy stocking. Manage with Stand 44. 81 J7 5 55 40 jack pine sparse final harvest 3 planting 2005: Scattered jack pine, mostly 10 and 12 inch trees, but the 10 BA includes some poles as well. The large jack pine is of remarkably good quality (perhaps left as seed trees, but if so they have failed to regen adequately). Some oak and red maple present but too little of it to include in the table. Cut with Stand 83 and replant. 83 22 56 38 jack pine mature final harvest 1 2005: Essentially pure. Cut with St 81 and replant. Total Acres... 347 Page 1 of 1 05/05/2005
