Your partner for a more sustainable future of fashion Winter 2018

At Eastman, we recognize the growing need to shift to a more sustainable fashion industry.

The fashion industry has an enormous and growing detrimental impact on our environment and society The fashion industry is one of the world s most polluting industries from pesticides used to grow cotton to emissions from factories producing materials and clothes to disposal of garments at the end of life The carbon footprint of the fashion industry today is equal to that of the total European Union. Over 70% of the world s clothing ends up in landfills, which emit very high amounts of greenhouse gases. Many cellulosic fibers contribute to deforestation there are estimates that 120 million trees are logged every year to make our clothing. Mishandled chemicals used to make fibers such as viscose have devastating effects on workers and the environment. The fashion industry consumes nearly 79 billion cubic meters of water per year enough to fill nearly 32 million Olympicsize swimming pools. 3 SOURCES: Pulse Of The Fashion Industry, 2017; A New Textiles Economy, 2017, Ellen Macarthur Foundation; Measuring Fashion study, 2018, Quantis; Changing Markets Dirty Fashion Report, 2017

To meet growing consumer and social demands, brands are increasingly seeking more sustainable yarns. THREE KEY SUSTAINABILITY CONSIDERATIONS, SPECIFICALLY FOR CELLULOSIC YARNS: Biobased and sustainably sourced No deforestation Transparent supply chain With safe and controlled use of chemicals No environmental or health hazards Reusing chemicals where possible Manufactured in a lowimpact, ethical manner Low carbon and water footprint Safe, responsible working conditions 4

To meet the future needs of a more sustainable fashion industry, Eastman Naia cellulosic yarn brings nature to fashion with a low environmental impact.

A filament cellulose diacetate yarn, Naia offers: SUSTAINABLY SOURCED WOOD PULP Responsibly sourced from sustainably managed forests and plantations, ensuring protection of ancient and endangered forests Naia is certified biobased by the USDA. Eastman and all wood pulp suppliers hold FSC and/or PEFC Chain of Custody* certifications SAFE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND CHEMICAL USE Produced in a safe, closed-loop process where solvents are recycled back into the system for reuse OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Product Class I certified; made with no hazardous chemicals listed on the ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substances List A LOW-IMPACT MANUFACTURING PROCESS An optimized, low-impact manufacturing process with a low treeto-yarn carbon and water footprint With a third-party reviewed Life Cycle Assessment compliant with ISO 14044; favorably ranked on the Higg Materials Sustainability Index *Eastman certifications: FSC-C140711 and PEFC/29-31-359 6

SUSTAINABLY SOURCED WOOD PULP: Certifications overview Eastman holds both FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody certification, ensuring the traceability of the wood pulp that we source. There are two major schemes for certifying responsible and sustainable forest management which follow different standards: Forest certification schemes have two scopes: Forest Management, which occurs at the forest level Chain of Custody, which ensures traceability of the raw material through the supply chain and back to the forest Forest Management certifies the forest area and Chain of Custody certifies the supply chain. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Adapts their own international standard to individual countries Assesses local standards against international criteria Certified 200 million hectares of forest and over 34,000 companies Certified over 300 million hectares of forest and over 20,000 companies Source: Hetsch, Sebastian. SUSTAINABLY SOURCED WOOD PULP: Our certifications Eastman holds both FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody certification, ensuring the traceability of the wood pulp that we source. The certification audit verified processes for tracking material through production and onward, ensuring each partner who touches the material is certified. Rayonier Bracell Cosmo Eastman Naia Pine and eucalyptus forests and plantations Some forests have Forest Management certifications. Wood pulp suppliers All wood suppliers have FSC/PEFC CoC certification; Cosmo/Rayonier also hold FSC Controlled Wood certification. Eastman holds FSC/PEFC CoC Certification 8

SAFE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND CHEMICAL USE: Our certifications Eastman Naia cellulosic yarn has received the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certification as a Class I product, which means it is safe for use in any textile material that has skin contact and is even approved for use in baby articles. This standard certifies the safety of the yarn after the production process. Eastman also assures that Naia cellulosic yarn is not made with any chemical substances listed on the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals organization s Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL). 9

A LOW-IMPACT MANUFACTURING PROCESS: Our Life Cycle Assessment Naia has a third-party reviewed cradle-to-factory-gate Life Cycle Assessment, compliant with the ISO 14044 standard Impacts of 1 kg of Naia yarn Equivalency For more information on our LCA, please request our EcoBrief. 10

A LOW-IMPACT MANUFACTURING PROCESS: HIGG Materials Sustainability Index (MSI) Because Naia is a filament yarn, the raw material score includes both raw material AND yarn formation, resulting in a score with a very low environmental impact compared to other materials, including generic viscose, lyocell, and modal. Raw material only Raw material + yarn formation Material Type of yarn MSI Score Total Score Lower Boundary Total Score Higher Boundary Lenzing viscose Europe Staple 5.0 9.0 39.5 Nylon 6.6, recycled (Fulgar) Filament 6.2 6.2 6.2 Tencel lyocell Staple 9.5 13.5 44.0 Polyester Filament 11.2 16.3 19.3 Eastman Naia cellulosic yarn Filament 19.3 19.3 19.3 The Naia MSI score includes yarn formation, which most other raw materials do not. This means the yarn formation score has to be added to the other raw material scores to make an apples-to-apples comparison.
